  • Hey everyone thanks for tuning in! This is my first video on, what you can expect on the day of surgery and the first week after surgery.
For starters here is how I got myself into this mess. In 2016 Oct I went dirt biking. And i haven't been for sometime maybe 10 years and i felt real comfortable and thought I could ride like I use to and got a little out of hand. Anyways I fell down and torn my ACL. I just started a new job and couldn’t have the surgery yet. So I had to work thought it. In 2019 I ended up tearing my meniscus now from just running around and being to comfortable on my legs when I should have played it safe.
Here we are in 2020. Now ill get into the whole process. Basically you will have an MRI so your doctor can see exactly what you did to your knee. Next he will go over the plan for what he does to repair your problem mine was a complete tear of the ACL and a slight tear in the meniscus. The way he repaired it was to take a piece of bone connected to tendon (top and bottom like a line) from the side of the tendon on my knee (same leg). Then he would drill through my knee/leg and attach them to create a new ACL. Then he would fix the meniscus, I believe he just shaved down the tear on the meniscus I’m not to sure on that one.
For the day of operation. So the day before surgery you have to start fasting at midnight. However i found out at the surgery center that its really just 2 hours before surgery no liquids at all and 8 hours of no foods. So now it begins, after your paper work and admissions. You will be took back and asked to change into a beautiful gown. Next they will ask you several health related questions, then they will shave you knee area. Now the anesthesiologist will come in with this huge syringe (its quiet scary looking) and It looks like it hurts. But the anesthesiologist will give to so pain medication and some gas to very relaxed for the syringe. The syringe is or whatever is called a Nerve Block and they use an ultra sound machine one the affected leg and put the nerve block into the top of your leg right at your underwear line basically. And on the ultrasound machine you watch this needle going into your nerves assumingely and they do it in a few nerves in that same spot. The nerve block was pretty intimidating at first but you’ll be fine. Now the next phase in going back to the actually surgery room. I had 3 nurses and one doctor. They will place heart monitors, rate and pressure, ekg and oxygen on you. Strap you down over the torso. Now they will knock you out.
You will wake up in an ICU type of room with the nurse over you. You will feel no pain at all you will feel like superman because of the nerve block. Its literally a life saver and you clearly dont appreciate it till it wears off. But after the surgery you will be able to leave pretty quick I believe i got out in like 45-60mins to leave. You go home with crutches and a knee immobilized, so it keeps your leg straight and btw you have no feeling in the leg so do NOT try to stand on it or you will feel it buckle under you.
Now i got to go home in the evening and I ate a regular dinner but they advice you to eat something like soup or something light because some people get nauseas and cant hold down food. After that I went to bed feeling really good.
Day 1 of recovery On the first day the nerve block is still pretty strong and you wont feel much pain. If recovery was like that it would be amazing. Day one is pretty smooth one of the smoother days. Pretty much just keep it iced and elevated. Towards the end of the day the nerve block will barely there at this point and the pain will start to set in. It will be very hard to get comfortable. When you go to lay down on the couch or bed getting your leg up will be very painful.
Day 2 The pain starts early on Day 2. Now here is where the fun begins. On the night of the second day my nerve block was completely wore off. The pain sucks, its pretty bad, and uncomfortable. You will get hydrocodone and you will be able to take it every 6hours but towards the end of its 6 hours i would say about 4 hours in its strength has gone and the pain is kicking in. Nice sharp stabbing constant pain. It will hurt to get up to use the restroom, you will just want to lay down. What helps to just stay still dont move around it will just reactivate the pain. Try to ice it down well and elevate it but mostly the pain killer will have to step up.
This is where I am at currently I will update as my days go on, but as of now its very slow and painful lol.
    Thanks you!

Thanks for all the great information. I am about to have ACL reconstruction surgery with my hamstring for a graft this Thursday so was helpful to hear what I'm about to go through. Hope you are doing well!

I’m on day 4 right now. This sht hurts so much man. I was not expecting it to hurt this bad. I’m a footballer and I’ve had other injuries before but nothing compares to the pain I’ve felt this time.

@@kimb9273 I’m doing great, you’ll get there too. It hurts a lot but everyday you’ll feel a little better, once you start walking on your own the recovery speeds up. Physical therapy is key, I’m playing football again, fully recovered.

@@arsenalkarmagrg6881 after surgery it will take you a few weeks to start walking, therapy is the key. After a few months of therapy I started jogging again and doing light jumps and change of direction moves. I was extremely dedicated to recovering and getting back football so I exercised daily, a lot of leg work outs and therapy. After about 15 months I was ready to play again. It has been over 2 years and im stronger than before the injury. In a weird way it ended up being a blessing, it made me work out consistently and it transformed me as an athlete. It’ll be the same for you if you put in the work and use it as an opportunity to transform your body. It is a painful long road but it will make you stronger.

I'm currently in the same situation bro I have a little 2 year old little girl as well and had put it off for over 4 years. I'm finally gonna be able to get it done November 19, but I know the road to recovery is long. Thanks for sharing your experience with us

I’m currently on day 4 and I’m ok. The first 2 days were hell. It hurt so bad. I had a lot of throbbing in the back on the left side and my thigh but it’s gotten better. I noticed that when the Hydro was wearing off that’s when the throbbing came back. On night 3 I decided to take 4 Advil in between and it’s helped. The couch is my bed so imagine how comfortable I can get,but it’s been pretty good. I haven’t taken off the wraps yet but I took off the brace and had so much relief.

I had torn my acl ,lateral, medial meniscus... did the graph for acl from my thigh and they were able to repair lateral meniscus but could not repair the buckle handle tear, so the they trimmed it out and cleaned the area up. Accident happend in 2019 of may and got surgery in june 24 of 2020... trying not to get discouraged with this rehab

@@michaelwhite592 Pretty similar for me...Its definitely a longer process than I thought. I thought I was going to fly through the recover/rehab, however I was wrong lol. Don't get discouraged take it day by day I hear a lot of people say about a year to be normal again. 6 months is approaching for me and Im still not 100% I feel like I made good progress but still have a lot to go. Are you going to be going to Physical Therapy? for these first few weeks I say try to move your knee little by little. Even if you can only move it a few inches up and down or whatever, because it will help you so much in the long run. A little movement goes a long way. Keep. me updated would like to know how your recover goes! and don't give up it gets better a lot better! 👌
