I just bought one of these for restoration. A slightly later model, but same intervals. This video is really helpful! You saved me much head-scratching! Thanks for a Great video!
I was pleased to see that you prudently chose to leave the mainspring coiled inside its housing. Perhaps you may come across one of those devices clockmakers use to coil and uncoil mainsprings (or maybe you could one day fabricate one for yourself.)
Just discovered your channel. Watching you and observing your attention to detail and your respect for 100+ year old technology has something very satisfying and soothing. Love it!
You put the meat on wrong. The meat goes on the center rod. The off-set rod is to keep the meat from spinning on the center rod. Good job on the restoration of that rusty oldy.
The chicken should be on the center rod of the spit and the adjustable tine would stick in the chicken to hold in place to keep it spinning and getting heat on all sides. The way it was set up, the chicken just rotated on the tine and the heavier side kept facing towards the fire. Really cool device though...
@@russellcampbell9641 If the impalement is done correctly, the subject is still alive when placed over the fire. And I simply ADORE peasants, but I never could finish a whole one.

A beautify restoration, as always. You probably shouldn't have greased the brass gears as they are self-lubricating. The grease only attracts dust which contributes to the wear.
What an interesting piece to restore! I loved the fact that you left the rough surfaces alone and didn't try to smoothen them out like so many other restorers do: it's part of their history and, well, antiquity. PS. I'd put that chicken on the actual spit and use smaller forks to keep it from spinning, but that's for another discussion :)

A very lovely restoration and such a great thing to have on a camp fire. A couple tips for you though. 1. When you tried repairing the handle you got the brass way too hot, that's why you used so much solder and it wouldn't stick. When doing that kind of repair just heat the brass only as hot as it needs to be to melt the solder. 2. Take all the mechanism back apart and strip all that grease off. You should never use it on a clock mechanism as it attracts dirt and grime and will eventually gum up the movement. If you need to lubricate it use a graphite based lubricant designed for clocks.
I wasn't expecting it to look like a clock inside, it came out really nice wish one when I was a boy scout, yes I was the guy turning the pig on the spit for hours. And thanks for paying the cat tax, love it!

Great job, as usual! I've veen wondering what was this machine for the whole video. Just a small sugestion, the chicken should be on the main shaft, and the branch fixes it avoiding it to rotate freely as it happened to tou. Cheers!
Best one yet! Only thing I personally would have done is "Japaned" the cast iron piece instead of gloss black paint. I see you plucked your own chicken too.... appropriate for a antique spit turner. Like the chrome wheel nut as the start of your spit manufacture.

I wonder how they put them back in the correct place and order.
Although very interesting..... I’m here for the sole purpose of trying it sleep at night 🙂
