I could listen to her for hours...I always loved how she was a bit "scattered" while she was talking....she was riveting...I bet she was fun to sit and have drinks with....Beautiful lady and so much talent...they don't make them like this anymore.

I just adored her. She never put on any airs, as they used to say. I read her books and watched all her movies. A Patch of Blue has always been my favorite. She was evil in it but she tore it up! Class act who was sooo beautiful and REAL!!!
That was a gem of an interview - literally sparkling. Shelley Winters is rarely put in the company of the top leading ladies of her era, but her body of work easily surpasses the vast majority of them, indelible performances remaining instantly accessible to this day, in some of the greatest classic films of all time. Not to mention what was perhaps her most beloved performance of all - herself! 100% genuine person. Growing up in the Hollywood area, I encountered Shelley a few times when I was younger, usually holding court at a restaurant or event, but the best was on a high school theater trip to NYC, where a tour of the Actors Studio serendipitously ended with the 12 of us surrounding Shelley (at her insistence) as she simultaneously directed a play rehearsal and attempted to learn how to play a hand-held video football game (a modern wonder in 1979) one of us happened to have, which she got into with such enthusiastic glee that her actors had no choice but to drop the play and come join the fun. Shelley Winters loved her work, but never more than life. xox.

Despite the unmerited? Oscar nod, the insipid _Poseidon Adventure_ was LONG after Ms. Winters' illustrious career ... not to mention a total waste of her talent.

This interview shows Shelley in a most intelligent light, deeply committed to the acting process and young actors...I have never seen the true color of her shining eyes more clearly, which is metaphoric. Even Skip E. is humbled and at his best. I have heard from actors who studied with Shelley about how boldly brilliant her sensibilities were, and unconditionally loving too, and this gem proves it. Shelley was one of the great actresses. Her performances in "A Place in the Sun" and "The Diary of Anne Frank" were just wonderful. The current crop in Hollywood wouldn't be fit to shine her shoes.
Skip was not the greatest interviewer by any stretch of the imagination...he drove me nuts when he cut people off mid story...many interruptions. But, having said that, he left us a treasure trove of conversations with some wonderful entertainers of a bygone era. For that I salute him.
There are a lot of words that can be used to describe Skip E. Lowe's interviewing technique, but "brilliant" is not one of them. Sorry, but he is without a doubt the absolute worst interviewer I have ever seen. Constantly interrupts, gets facts wrong, gets names wrong, asks a question then cuts off the answer to ask something completely different, makes inane and nonsensical remarks ("Shelly Winters, you have a lot of feeling for the human people out there"; what the hell does THAT mean?) If his interviews are interesting it's despite him, not because of him.

I recently saw an interview he did with Renee Taylor and her husband the late Joseph Bologna and he kept mispronouncing his second name badly, it was so embarrassing and unprofessional! And he was always mispronouncing the titles of movies and plays or getting them wrong altogether. How on Earth did the useless old queen persuade all these Hollywood greats to turn up for his crappy little cable show? I guess he got himself invited to all the parties on the circuit and sucked up to them. I found him really creepy, I'm amazed Shelley Winters and others wanted anything to do with him, let alone allowed him to befriend them!
Thank you so much for this! I loved her memoir "Shelley Also Known As Shirley." She is one of the most intelligent people ever to work in Hollywood and the New York theater. I could listen to her for hours. And this is my introduction to Skip E. Lowe. What a great interviewer! He really does know how to listen and he does not fawn. How refreshing to see Shelley as a thoughtful, multi-faceted person. I can't watch her late night talk show interviews because they are the opposite of what is shown here and what she revealed in her book.
DaleHalgrem Well said. Ive been on holiday to Germany many times and find Germans truly delightful people. And they have no reason to be kind to me as being British we decimated that country. Without a strong Germany we will not have a strong Europe both FDR and Churchill/Attlee knew that. I will not even comment on what she said about Margaret Thatcher. Unified Germany has outlived her and will continue. The time has passed when, whilst never forgetting, Germany-has paid enough for their sins.The younger Germans should not be expected to carry the sins of their fathers forever.
Shelley was a bud - I knew her quite well. Think well of her; she deserves it. Talented, and very bright (unusual for an actress) - crazy as a loon - a heart of diamond. We loved each other - no, not as lovers, as people. ...Some great memories.

I could listen to her for hours , what a remarkable intelligent actress . I first saw her on TV the late show “A Patch of Blue” and was aware she won an Oscar for the role , playing a truly despicable character - imagine being abusive to a blind girl !!! Just a few years later , she appeared in what was to become one of my all time favorite movies “Poseidon Adventure”. I was 12 years old at the time, the first movie I ever saw 3 times at the theatre. Kids today don’t understand how that film revolutionized special effects in movies. By my college years thanks to Red River and From Here to Eternity , I became a huge fan of Montgomery Clift and of course eventually watched A Place in the Sun , many many times as well. This interview is fascinating , I had never heard of Skip before but he is really good. Like she says, a good listener. Thanks for sharing !
Came here right after watching 1959's "Diary of Anne Frank" (a far better WWII movie than The Pianist imo.). I, being foolish, expected Shelley Winters to be antagonistic and reserved in interviews. This proved me wrong. What a great, honest personality she was and what a cool interview!
My response to this grande interview w/ Ms. Winters is astonishing. I've watched many of her interviews ; by far this the best. The way she speaks of John Kennedy's Assassination is exactly as it was for me as well. Although, I was in grade school I had fallen in love w/ The Kennedys. We had a great Vibrancy of a new & revitalized spirit in America. His death was the end of that dream that indeed had become a reality. Her definition of feelings at that time I believe closely show what an Entire World felt.
We were never the same after JFK's assassination. We lost our "innocence". A great tragedy. Only people who lived through then really understand the magnitude of that event. If Shelly were still living she'd be very angry with trump's "reign".
A great actress, a great human being. She was a good friend of Jordan the lion, (a youtube star) during her last years. He's taken us to her grave and he tears up when he talks about her. She was a true friend.
Shelly was a first class swimmer and won awards for it. She did her own swimming scenes in The Poseidon Adventure. It's a wonderful movie and her scenes are fantastic.
This is a great program; Skip is awesome. To respond to one of their subjects: I was in the 9th grade. All students were called back to their homerooms. Miss Salisbury adressed us in a stern serious manner, "There is a rumor that President Kennedy has been shot. You are all to go home as quicly as you can and pray it isn't true."
Her performance in "What's The Matter With Helen?" isn't talked about enough. The nuances from repressed, to absolutely insane, are something to behold...a force of nature!
In high school we were made to watch the movie was Shelley Winters were she was in an attic with these other people trying to get away from Hitler it was very hard for me to watch and made me very sad but now that I'm older I was glad our teacher forced us to watch it
Wow...I don't understand all the shade thrown at SEL... His show was on public access for crying out loud! Just a guy enjoying life and enjoying a chat with friends... He never claimed to be anything but a lover of all things old Hollywood! And many famous folks loved him! I adore his shows ❤
May I recommend a SENSATIONAL & SENSITIVE Winters performance in a little-known film? It's called AN UNREMARKABLE LIFE with Patricia Neal and Mako. About two elderly sisters who live together and depend upon each other and what happens when one of them (Neal) enters into a relationship with a gardner (Mako). Winters is incredibly moving. Well- worth checking out!
I have watched several interviews with Shelley Winters and I have grown to love her. She is warm and honest and kind to her fellow actors. Oh, and did I say interesting and a treasure trove of Hollywood lore. It seems that Mr. Lowe emphasized her jewish heritage more than she does.
That is so funny that she tells the story of yelling CUT!!! and stopping a scene during Anne Frank because the director of The Poseidon Adventure says she did that same thing on THAT movie, and it drove him nuts, she yelled it because she saw a piece of paper on the floor that wasn't supposed to be there! The director told her not to ever do that and nobody was going to see the floor in the shot anyway!! Well Shelley did get nominated for Poseidon Adventure.....
I loved her in the Poseidon Adventure! My mother cried in the movie theater when she died. Ernest Borgnine did that repeating thing they always do in the movies. Something like "You had a lotta guts, lady....... a lotta guts. Funniest was when Stella Stevens (love her too) said she didn't want to be stuck behind "fatass." 😄
I have always liked Shelly , The part where she speaks of Otto Frank & says he never saw the film ? How could he ! I remember Tina Turner saying she never saw what's love got to do with it & when asked why she replied I lived it ! I could never watch certain parts of my life on stage or on screen ! We all have terrible parts we have to play in this world & God knows its bad enough to have to live through them let alone watching someone play them . I remember when the diary of Ann Frank was first performed in Holland near the end when the Nazis storm the attic the people in the audience let out a huge scream because so many had actually lived through it . At the end of the play when the curtain came down it was pure silence ! no one clapped or said a word ! It was pure silence & then the Queen of Holland got up & left with her lady's in waiting & the crowd followed . Sad to say the least . I hope they are all together now & at peace xoxoxo ...
thats terrible to learn that Susan Strasberg turned down the movie of Anne Frank. Not only would she have been great in it(like she was on stage) but it might have made her a bigger star. She had a promising career but it didn't work out. I used to believe George Stevens didnt want her cause he thought she was too old,, but Shelley tells it differently here.

Besides his annoying habit of interrupting and making ah-hah noises of affirmation, Skip’s overall demeanor and style remind of that cloying character Martin Short did years ago on SCTV. I give Winters credit for getting through it and expressing herself.

Great interview. Funny, the movie she did with Roger Moore in Belgium and can't remember the title of is 'That Lucky Touch'. Not the best of movies but she was funny as hell in it. Most of her scenes were shot in the castle of Rumbeke.
Shelley winters is the type of women that doesn't get bothered or jealous by other beautiful women she seems so chill and relaxed with herself.

Shelley was very intelligent and could be very serious. The "looney" Shelley was something she affected for the late-night comedy shows.

I have watched several interviews with Shelley Winters and I have grown to love her. She is warm and honest and kind to her fellow actors. Oh, and did I say interesting and a treasure trove of Hollywood lore. It seems that Mr. Lowe emphasized her jewish heritage more than she does.

I remember seeing her in the Paul Newman movie Harper. It was done the same year as I was born.
That is so funny that she tells the story of yelling CUT!!! and stopping a scene during Anne Frank because the director of The Poseidon Adventure says she did that same thing on THAT movie, and it drove him nuts, she yelled it because she saw a piece of paper on the floor that wasn't supposed to be there! The director told her not to ever do that and nobody was going to see the floor in the shot anyway!! Well Shelley did get nominated for Poseidon Adventure.....
I loved her in the Poseidon Adventure! My mother cried in the movie theater when she died. Ernest Borgnine did that repeating thing they always do in the movies. Something like "You had a lotta guts, lady....... a lotta guts. Funniest was when Stella Stevens (love her too) said she didn't want to be stuck behind "fatass." 😄

I have always liked Shelly , The part where she speaks of Otto Frank & says he never saw the film ? How could he ! I remember Tina Turner saying she never saw what's love got to do with it & when asked why she replied I lived it ! I could never watch certain parts of my life on stage or on screen ! We all have terrible parts we have to play in this world & God knows its bad enough to have to live through them let alone watching someone play them . I remember when the diary of Ann Frank was first performed in Holland near the end when the Nazis storm the attic the people in the audience let out a huge scream because so many had actually lived through it . At the end of the play when the curtain came down it was pure silence ! no one clapped or said a word ! It was pure silence & then the Queen of Holland got up & left with her lady's in waiting & the crowd followed . Sad to say the least . I hope they are all together now & at peace xoxoxo ...
thats terrible to learn that Susan Strasberg turned down the movie of Anne Frank. Not only would she have been great in it(like she was on stage) but it might have made her a bigger star. She had a promising career but it didn't work out. I used to believe George Stevens didnt want her cause he thought she was too old,, but Shelley tells it differently here.

Great interview. Funny, the movie she did with Roger Moore in Belgium and can't remember the title of is 'That Lucky Touch'. Not the best of movies but she was funny as hell in it. Most of her scenes were shot in the castle of Rumbeke.
