Last time I shed a tear at a professional athletic event was right here, when they announced Dimaggio as Gehrig's teammate. Gehrig had been long, long gone but here was a final living look back.

Can't believe DiMaggio lived long enough to witness this moment. A player who belonged to practically the golden age of baseball witnessed the downfall and then the revival when recorded footage became a common thing. Glad to see this 😊

Given that Gehrig was taken out in his prime, I had hoped that Ripkin would have honored him by sitting out the tying game. What a grand gesture that would have been! But then, Gehrig probably would have been appalled at the idea.

Not polite to speak I'll of the dead . But DiMaggio was a primadonna. He had presenters present himself as the greatest Yankee .now doesn't that sound egotistical. Also why did he retire after 16 seasons ? To me the greatest Yankee , New Yorker , and man is Louis Gehrig.

Joe only played 13 years....NOT 16......He was the undisputed leader of a Yankee team that won 10 AL pennants and 9 World Series.......Late in life he was introduced as the....'greatest living player.'......never the greatest Yankee. Babe Ruth is not only the greatest Yankee, but the greatest player ever....rivaled only by Willie Mays.......The Yankees have mistakenly retired many numbers.......ONLY one number should have ever been retired......#4 of Lou Gehrig!!!!
