What's this rebate they talk of? My taxes are always up to date, I know the carbon tax has stripped me of thousands, I'm a small contractor who travels rural alberta building. I've never received a cent back. I know my friend on welfare who doesn't own a car and doesn't buy gas or fuel of any kind gets a check, what about me the working guy?

look it's simple carbon rebate is based on gasoline sales and fuel costs so if you do not pay for fuel consumption you get more money back than you pay so if you are fuel purchasing Canadian you are getting penalties for your bad habits so yup rewards people who don't need fuel and if you need you use fuel because you don't live in big cities with mostly fuel based transportation your the loser

Your argument at 10 minutes doesn't make sense. The tax increases the price of fossil fuels, disincentivizing their purchase, and then the rebates give money back but not based on how much fossil fuel you used. So, by using less gas, you pay less tax but you receive the same amount of money you otherwise would. I'm on team Conservative, but I would like to see conservatives not be antagonistic to the point of distortion in their opposition to Liberals.
Ah, you're right - I should've been clearer about what I was trying to say. Let me clarify: We pay a set amount of carbon tax per litre of gasoline ($.17/litre on April 1st), GJ of natural gas, kg of coal, etc.
Now, carbon rebates are set per province. Every married couple, or single adult, gets back the same rebate. The carbon tax we pay, however, is variable. If you purchase more O&G (larger home, more driving, etc), you pay more in carbon tax. If you purchase less O&G, you pay less carbon tax.
Thus, the more carbon you consume, the more tax you pay, which cancels out a larger portion of the "rebate." For ease of mathematics, suppose my carbon rebate is $1000. If I pay $1000 in carbon tax, my rebate cancels the tax out and I have a net $0 from the program. But if I use less carbon, and only pay $600 in carbon tax, my rebate gives me a net $400. On this point, I absolutely agree with you.
But now return to the 10 min mark - notice that Freeland accuses Poilievre of "cuts, cuts, cuts," because he wants to axe the carbon tax. She goes on to say, "He wants to cut the support that Canadians are getting from the price on pollution. That's $1800 Alberta families won't get." But wait! Freeland completely dismisses the fact that there would no longer be a carbon tax in place! Of course there wouldn't be a rebate: there wouldn't be a tax to fund it!
The argument I'm trying to make is this: Let's suppose the carbon rebate really did offset our carbon tax (an argument I don't buy due to the numbers), as the Liberals promote. Why would we stop using O&G? To save a few $hundreds more? But doesn't switching from reliable O&G to the inconvenience of, say, wind, wipe out any proposed saving? It's true that we could get a larger portion of that $1800 rebate (for a family of 4 in Alberta), but that $hundreds in saving is nothing compared to the benefits that accrue to the family from using O&G!
O&G (gasoline in particular), is an inelastic good. We use the same amount of fuel whether it's $1.00/litre, or $1.25/litre. We need it, and it gives us value (driving to work to make money, taking vacations with the family, not freezing to death in the winter, etc). When we take this inelastic effect into account, it's usually far more beneficial to let the rebate offset our usage of carbon, than it is to transfer to a "O&G free" way of life.
In fact, as proven by the majority still using O&G, it's better for us to pay more to use oil and gas, and totally cancel out our carbon rebate in the process, than it is for us to switch to wind, solar, etc!
What I should've said was this - the rebate is too large, or the carbon tax is too small, to make any real difference in our consumption of carbon. By giving us the rebate, Freeland and the Liberals are giving us an incentive to not transition away from O&G. If a man's carbon tax is $1000 and the rebate is $1000, it's as though he didn't pay any carbon tax. True, he could move to an electric powered car and save $500 on carbon tax/year, but the higher cost of the vehicle, along with the inconvenience of long trips, increased fill-up times, scarce fill-up stations, and so on, imposes a cost on him that's far higher than $500.
Thus, the carbon rebate is really an incentive to keep us using carbon (as pricey as they're trying to make it), and the tax is a disaster.
