Exclusive: inside the new Scandinavian Airlines A321LR

  • Here's an exclusive look at the first A321LR for Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). We take you through the whole aircraft both inside and out, and we speak to Per Tideus, product manager for SAS, who was responsible for the cabin we see today.
After a delay of several months, service on this aircraft is due to begin officially on March 27, 2022 between Copenhagen (CPH) and Washington DC (IAD). But it's also operating a handful of special flights this week, first to Oslo and then to DC - so we can finally bring you this video now that it's flying the general public!
This plane is unique not only because it's the first long-haul configured narrow-body for SAS, but also (especially) because that includes a premium economy class (SAS Plus) laid out 2-by-2. While it's not unusual to find an A321LR these days configured with lie-flat business class seats, as many airlines are turning to these planes to serve less-trafficked routes that nevertheless have some demand, finding a premium economy like this onboard is completely new. It's a lot like flying domestic first class in the US - not a terrible way to cross the Atlantic at all.
Let us know what you think.

If the price is right this premium economy cabin in a 2-2 configuration, with seats not unlike domestic First in the US, could be a real sweet spot for transatlantic flights. Do you agree?

This new premium economy is really great. 👍 Think of all passengers who want to have an adequate amount of space and more comfort.
With introduction of extremely low fares in Eco with often 31 '' seating it is a good idea. To keep passengers interested in flying. And not having to fear the next uncomfortable flight.

I think Premium Economy (SAS Plus) is really great. You get a way more comfortable experience, for not a lot more money. Those who dislike how aviation has become more cramped but cheaper, well here's your option. And options are a good thing.

The B757 is actually a little more compatible for this role. The problem is that Being dropped the ball on upgrading the 757, while Airbus saw this potential with the Boeing NMA delayed indefinitely. It will take a while for Them to catch up in this segment

It was a very comfortable and amazing experience with this type of flight in a narrow edge body. Both to/from Washington via CPH. Excellent concept. The only negative thing is that Plus members need to use the toilet area with all 140GO members, where Business 22members do have their own one toilet for a 9 or 8 hours flight.

Really great looking aircraft, from the inside as well as the outside. However, I have to say I still prefer wide-body aircraft for longer flights. The extra space, the quiteness and stability of those big planes for me is worth the plane changing hassle, and once you've been spoiled by traveling e.g. in an A380 you don't really what to travel any other way - at least I don't.
Also, I personally don't even mind changing planes at Hubs. For me that's just part of the travel experience, especially if you are interested in planes anyway.

I had a business trip to Kuala Lumpur back in 2009. I could have flown direct but purposely organised my flights to allow me a decent transit stop in Singapore - 3 hrs outbound and 9 hours on the return trip to London. What an airport WSSS is!

I took a 7.5 hour flight on an AA 757 to South America a few years ago. Thankfully, I was able to do economy plus on the outbound and first on the return. I don't think I would want to do standard Y class for 7 hours on a single aisle plane.

I recently flew roundtrip between Delhi and Almaty on Air Astana A321N LR. My skepticism toward narrow body was taken away by how amazingly comfortable the cabin is and I flew economy this time. Air Astana really nailed it. Long haul on narrow body? Yes, I think it will work if airlines really take their time to get the cabin configuration right 😁

What a pity, CPH to IAD is (was should I say now?) my standard route, and I loved the Business Class seat arrangement on the A330/340, but the prospect of flying this weird C seat configuration on a narrow body which cannot escape the sometimes rough jet stream by flying above it because the A321 has a lower max flight altitude, is not my cup of tea. I like the A320 family a lot, but for short/medium haul routes only. Sad, I liked the SAS product so far on their wide body planes, but I guess I need to look for alternatives now.

Very nice. I grew up on long haul narrow body aircraft, namely the 707 & briefly VC-10 so nothing new back then & in-flight entertainment was looking out the window, the best view on the planet. I have flown SAS on their 737s & to be frank their scratchy windows sucked as my video camera was more interested in the scratches than the scenery I was trying to film. I hope they take better care of the Airbus windows.

I love the plane no doubt about that but what I see is a foreign built B-757-200 which is my all time most favorite aircraft. Why Boeing gave up and walked away from the B-757 is beyond me as it was one of the best aircraft ever built. For Airbus Industries taking up this niche market and filling the void left open by Boeing with such a beautiful aircraft with the perfect seating layout in a narrow body, I likey I likely.

I’ve flown frequently on a 757 on transatlantic flights and expect the A321LR, and XLR, to be just as good. For flights like Europe to the US west coast a narrow body is perfectly fine, for longer routes I can totally understand why people might prefer to fly on a wide body!

I've flown transatlantic on the A321LRs of Primera back in 2018 and I can tell you that 4 hours in I started feeling very claustrophobic sitting on a window seat in Y class. When I flew a Norwegian 787 on the way back, I breathed a sigh of relief as I sat down (also window Y seat). The lack of overhead space on the narrowbody airplanes is a dealbreaker for me. Nevertheless, this is a great looking aircraft and I would gladly fly it on shorter European routes.

Nice cabin lay out. Love the SK seats, my favorites in Eco and Prem Eco. However I would never fly a narrow body on a long haul. Interesting also their calculation on pax costs. Did they take into account that those flights wont take much cargo, especially now when considering the high airfreight rates? On a B787 u easy end up with 60K additional cargo revenue. We even had flights with much more than 100K revenue, just for cargo

PE layout is 2X2 while the economy class is 3X3 so how it works for the third passenger seated in the first row of economy in terms of PTV? I also noticed the same issue in the last row of economy class which also features sreens on the back of the seat but those seats are facing the lavatory's bulkwall .... which means there is no need for them to be placed . Is threre any reason for that ?

The cabin looks very comfortable and I would have no problem flying it across the Atlantic. My only criticism is that the cabin is very Grey and simple, there is no separation or break in the colour between each cabin and it does not really capture my attention. I think it would have been nice for them to include some Scandinavian style wood surfaces into the business seat to give it a sense of added luxury and break up the grey palate and have more accents of the SAS blue within the cabin, but like the Cabin designer said he was working to a very tight deadline. Apart from that i think it’s a very nice aircraft and the new livery suits it well.

One question. I grew up with SAS (my Dad was one of the founding employees) and one of my favorite things about the airline is the naming of the aircraft with Viking names. Back in the 1970s, I worked on the ramp at JFK and I got to know all the SAS aircraft by their names. If you know, what is the name of this aircraft?

    • @cyruspatel8859

      This 321 is Jarl Viking.
My Dad was also with (and founding employee) SAS and retired just as the DC10s entered service. But I was lucky enough to get passes until I was 24 so I did use all the ID privilege's I could. And did transit thorough JFK may times with my last free pass arriving at EWR. Best memories at Kennedy seeing SK911 land from the Worldport rooftop parking then walking back to the IAB to board for 912. Usually flew on Hugh, Ivar and Bjarne Viking across the pond. My younger brother also flew on Dan Viking N4501Q (Boeing's 500th Jumbo).

Excellent J Class product and certainly something to try. Does anyone here know where SAS will use these new A321NX's? I heard IAD may be one option. I would hope YYZ is in the cards. Also a good ace card to use out of Oslo to link it to ORD.

If they want to provide the same experience I dont understand why they dont install the same type of business cabin of wide body aircraft. The narrower body is just an excuse. The reality is that they still want a similar number of business seats of a widebody without stealing space for all the other economy seats. Only JetBlue made a narrowbody business class comparable to a wide body. It is just a choice non an operational matter. An A321 can have a 1-1 business class with no problem, the same seats as are installed on the A350 and 787. In fact on the A321 the with of one business seat could equal to 3 economy seats, the same that is on those bigger widebodies.

It's a very nice aircraft and SAS did a great job with that interior, but you'll still never see me in that cabin on any flight over 4 hours. I am not a fan of this trend of narrow body long haul flying. I am sorry, but I am just old enough to remember TATL in a 707 and Europe to Australia via the ME and Asia in said 707, several times. No thanks, my last 707 over the pond was 1978 and my first wide body was the same route a year later and what a difference. Even on transcons I will choose even the 767 over the A320/321 or the 757 any day and twice on Sunday. I did a 737 JFK-LAS once, just once, never again.

Surprisingly, no one compares or discusses fuleconsumtion (passenger seat milage in liters of cerosine per 100 km flow) vs wide body aircraft?

    • @Flightradar24DotCom
      @Flightradar24DotCom  2 роки тому

Fair point. It can be difficult to compare because of differently configured aircraft, lack of real world info from actual operations and other variables. However if you look at general figures and not specific airline data to get an approximate idea, and simply divide kg of fuel burned by the number of seats onboard, we figure the SAS A321LR will burn roughly 15% less per seat hour than the SAS A350....

A great looking product, especially in J & PY... For me I would rather not do a longhaul Economy in a single aisle aircraft. Would most definatley travel in the PY or J class though. The SK PY seating reminds me of QF, VA & ZL domestic Australian Business Class seating.

The difference between 1 and 2 aisles can't by anything else than psychological. It's exactly as cramped, if not more, on 2-aisle planes. It might feel worse on a narrowbody because, well, it's narrow. But for the seat and the space you have, no. The only plane where you can really notice a difference is the 380, lower cabin.
