Clearly the goal here Phoebe, is to acquire 365 acoustic instruments, then you can play a different one every day. Now, let's get that mandolin collection going!
i love your guts to show the world how hard it is to lean an instrument. Most of us stay in the closet but you show it to the world. Good for you!! You are amazing..
Delighted to see you with dulcimers! We have 2 in our home as well. My husband watched last Friday and learned to play “ I’ll Fly Away “ from your video. Good job!
That's called notes drone playing with the noter!! That's how it was played long ago and some people still do except instead of a pick they used a turkey quill with the feathers removed!! I play in DADD,or CGCC which is like double C and D on the banjo the tunings are layed out the same!!🙂
Noter drone I meant you only note the double melody strings with the wooden noter and let the middle and bass strings drone hence the name! Hope this helps
Dr. Phoebe, thank you for sharing your musical explorations with us! I am sure your dulcimer playing will improve quickly, with your talent and hard work. Much love and God's blessings to you, Doc! ❤❤❤❤❤
Depending on the age and quality of the instrument, friction pegs can be great or can be a real pain. You can apply what's called peg compound (basically rosin) to the pegs to keep them from slipping, but if properly fitted and made of the right materials, they shouldn't need this often if ever.
That was great! This dulcimer is called a tear drop shape, the other one you have is an hour glass shape. (Since your chickens are always supervising, you'll have to learn Cluck Ol' Hen!) As a hint, try putting more arm motion in your strumming with a pick. Think of a circular motion, that will give you more attack on the melody string, bringing more of the sound out over the two drones. However, I like the "claw hammer" style of playing you use, it sounds really nice.
Phoebe, my blind friend Renee has a dulcimer. We fixed the issue of slipping friction tuning pegs with chalk on the friction surface of each peg. It really works. I think talcum powder would work too. Practice makes perfect and you are going great!!
Oh my heart. The dulcimer is such a beautiful instrument. What a truly joyful song. So glad I stumbled on you post. Thanks for sharing. Keep on playing!
Another nice instrument to get acquainted with. If you have a word with your fiddle playing colleague, he's bound to have some peg compound to make tuning way easier.
I believe you can use white chalk stick and markup the tuner pegs. This will.give them more bite and grip within the peg housing; they'll hold their tune longer. Those strings may need breaking in too.
Phoebe, I really like the dulcimer sound and you play it well. Very enjoyable even when it was "less than stellar" it sounded great. Looking forward to more!
It’s always fun watching you learn stuff. Thanks for sharing. And the little brown chicken off to the back was pretty cool with the yellow door very aesthetically pleasing. You might wanna take a still shot from this particular video for an album/CD cover
There's a guy in Townsend Tennessee who makes them and plays them. He has one similar to a banjo even. They even made dual versions, called "courting dalcimers." Very popular instruments in Appalachian music.
A great start! The tune was recognizable. Double strings can be tricky to get them paired perfectly. Maybe we'll have to get you an eight string banjo-mandolin!
There's a video of Donovan in which he says he learned to play clawhammer guitar by listening to Ma Carter records. In India he taught John Lennon who taught George. Listen to 'Blackbird', with that new knowledge.
Might try a piece or drawer liner cloth over your leg to keep the instrument stable. Great playing . Remember 5,1,or 3 (frets 0/7,3,5) are where most songs start. I'm positive you will find the melodies. Don't fret!
Loving the Mountain Dulcimer. It is not anywhere near as loud as the banjo. Dulcimers are rather quiet instrument (as the name states) actually so maybe place a mic near the sound holes? Keep it up Phoebe. I love playing the Dulcimer.
See if you can find copies of “ in search of the wild dulcimer “ by Fross and D'Osse I think long out of print but still around and Jean Ritchie's Dulcimer Book for more traditional tunes
Thank you, Phoebe. The hens contentedly clucking provides a unique backup sound. Eat your heart out, Nashville. So nice to see living, green leaves. Here 'In The Bleak MidWinter" we have "water like a stone". It is a bit concerning that your new musical instrument won't stay in tune. It might be a good idea to have your banjo instructor or someone more knowledgeable look it over. Be Well.
If you want to hear some great playing, look for Richard Farina with a tilda on the n, and his recordings with his wife MiMi. She's Joan Bayez (sp)sister.
God bless you, you are in good company. Lap steel guitar is similar. You will get there, Your young. My lap steel is in G,B,D,F#,B,D#/Eb. Try other open tunings. That is why string instruments are fun.
@carlaeskelsen I should have thought of that? , but although my Grandfather was a Scott I never considered them in the least bit musical lol I have played bagpipes for a bet, I've also accidentally trodden on my cat and to be frank I'd be pushed to tell the difference 🤣🤣
I would think that this is a VERY new instrument. The strings and being a new instrument means ..... for a while ... you will have to tune frequently. That will become less and less the more the instrument VIBRATES and becomes whole.

It takes courage to let people watch the learning process warts and all. Hats off to you.👍
i love your guts to show the world how hard it is to lean an instrument. Most of us stay in the closet but you show it to the world. Good for you!! You are amazing..
Delighted to see you with dulcimers! We have 2 in our home as well. My husband watched last Friday and learned to play “ I’ll Fly Away “ from your video. Good job!
Sweet girl, sweet music and i love the chickens doing their chicken stuff with no care in the world.
That is a beautiful sound that that instrument makes.
Very nice! The teardrop shape originated in Virginia into North Carolina! And the hourglass shape originated in Kentucky!!
That's called notes drone playing with the noter!! That's how it was played long ago and some people still do except instead of a pick they used a turkey quill with the feathers removed!! I play in DADD,or CGCC which is like double C and D on the banjo the tunings are layed out the same!!🙂

Nice people attract nice people. That's a great looking dulcimer and those are friction pegs. Have a great weekend!

What a beautiful organic, beautiful long fish shaped ❤😊 dulcimer. We loved back in hippy daze,,70s
Great going ' and nice tone ' ...I literally thought it has a chicken headstock 4:31 ha ha

Sounds good 🎉
Awww yeah, loving all the dulcimer goodness! Don't see enough of them, glad you've got some to play with now.
It is going to be fun to be on your dulcimer journey! We will know your baseline and recognize your progress!

Your growing girl, Go get em
I must say, I enjoyed that song very much, it definitely took the fret. I’ve been having this evening away. Thank you so much.
Everyone send Phoebe dulcimers! Then Phoebe can fulfill her lifelong dream of opening a dulcimer shop!
That is your lifelong dream, right Phoebe?
😂
Make Phoebe’s shed the dulcimer capital of the free world
I believe you can use white chalk stick and markup the tuner pegs. This will.give them more bite and grip within the peg housing; they'll hold their tune longer. Those strings may need breaking in too.
Somewhere Ole Hank is smiling!
The bass note sounded good as a semi-drone, You have a Great tuning face,, just saaay'n
Phoebe, I really like the dulcimer sound and you play it well. Very enjoyable even when it was "less than stellar" it sounded great. Looking forward to more!
You got this Phoebe
i love listening to your music while I play games
you obviously love the music as much as I do
I envy you for having the skill to actually make it
It’s always fun watching you learn stuff. Thanks for sharing. And the little brown chicken off to the back was pretty cool with the yellow door very aesthetically pleasing. You might wanna take a still shot from this particular video for an album/CD cover
is she to Afford a Dulcime Den addition
to the Banjo Shed?
You gotta start somewhere, keep it up!
Cool!
Ive never seen or even heard of this. Interesting sound
It comes across as a mountain dulcimer sound, curly maple, walnut, cherry, the wood transmits to us the music inherent, waiting to be brought out.
You are so amazing for your young age. Very impressive...
You might not realize, but you're exceedingly quick at picking up new things :)
well played phoebe I to have a dulcimer just starting out I will follow your journey and pick up a few tips along the way 🤟
There's a guy in Townsend Tennessee who makes them and plays them. He has one similar to a banjo even. They even made dual versions, called "courting dalcimers." Very popular instruments in Appalachian music.
I like the yellow of the gate with the blue of your clothes.
A great start! The tune was recognizable. Double strings can be tricky to get them paired perfectly. Maybe we'll have to get you an eight string banjo-mandolin!
You should look at BanJammer dulcimers. They have a banjoie bit glued to the end that gives the dulcimer a banjo sound.
Yet another pretty shirt...love from Poland
Your dulcimer is awesome, as are you!
"Authentic Old Timey Sound"
"Back in my day, all the songs went down in pitch and key - as was the custom at the time!"
I think it's called a teardrop shape.
This was very nice doing good.
was hoping for my weekly fix
thanks!
amei o som desse dulcimer!
Thanks!
Thank YOU!
Friction tuners take some getting used to, but there should be a video about using talcum or chalk powder for tuner stability.
Play it long and play it hard. It is a living thing. It needs some love.
Look at the green of the mango leaves with the blue of that sky!!
That one has feet, can it be played on a table?
🧡
Another Dulcimer!
weather check from the UK. big storm with another due Monday i think.
👍👍👍👍
So much talent in a tiny package
I think you'll overcome the tuning issue, beautiful instrument.
😊
Some of that gave off a great George Harrison sitar vibe!
*Ravi Shankar has entered the chat*
There's a video of Donovan in which he says he learned to play clawhammer guitar by listening to Ma Carter records. In India he taught John Lennon who taught George. Listen to 'Blackbird', with that new knowledge.
That is a strange instrument, but it is cool!
Phoebe, can we have a dulcimer day?
that was awesome!
if you improve you will be incredible!
Might try a piece or drawer liner cloth over your leg to keep the instrument stable. Great playing . Remember 5,1,or 3 (frets 0/7,3,5) are where most songs start. I'm positive you will find the melodies. Don't fret!
I approve of you playing without the pick and just fingering the strings. It sounds soo much better.
It sounds better with the noter. That way you get the distinctive sound of all the notes in between sounding as the noter slides.
I love yourplaykng young lady
Loving the Mountain Dulcimer. It is not anywhere near as loud as the banjo. Dulcimers are rather quiet instrument (as the name states) actually so maybe place a mic near the sound holes? Keep it up Phoebe. I love playing the Dulcimer.
Friction tuners should be pushed in as you turn them.
😊😊😊
thats rad
The first notes. Beatles. Norwegian wood.
See if you can find copies of “ in search of the wild dulcimer “ by Fross and D'Osse I think long out of print but still around and Jean Ritchie's Dulcimer Book for more traditional tunes
Cover that please withh all your talent.
🤠
I kinda want Dulcimer Friday...
Maybe Dulcimer Friday night
You should try lap steel guitar next ❤

I think it sounds best when you are using your fingers !!
Фиби, очень рад за тебя!

This is all well and good, but that dulcimer has frets. Maybe play it on Thursday.
Dear Phoebe in my experience NO acoustic instrument is louder than a banjo except maybe drums 🤣😁
Bagpipes. 😁
@carlaeskelsen
I should have thought of that? , but although my Grandfather was a Scott I never considered them in the least bit musical lol I have played bagpipes for a bet, I've also accidentally trodden on my cat and to be frank I'd be pushed to tell the difference 🤣🤣
Great! Now you need a hammer dulcimer…..
I would think that this is a VERY new instrument. The strings and being a new instrument means ..... for a while ... you will have to tune frequently. That will become less and less the more the instrument VIBRATES and becomes whole.
Heavy string farthest away from you is the D the closer two are A's
tuning ADHD🤣
