If it's any comfort, most of their songs have much better vocals; the issue here is that the song is telling a horror-infused Japanese folk tale. Many of lines are done by oni (Japanese ogres) with "Shabby long hair and coats made of straws Red faces just showing wrath" -- not the kind of being to expect dulcet tones from. 😉 I have no complaints with your analysis, it's spot on.
I just hope the next Ningen Izu song you hear is "Heartless Scat". It's the song that brought them into the spotlight. Which is ironic, because it's a song in which they complain about having never been in the spotlight...

One of my favorite bands as of this moment, only found them around a couple years ago with "Heartless Scat" but hooked me instantly.

(Hard 'g' in Ningen.. like in "get". Also a hard 'g' in Namahage)
This is a bit of an odd one to start you off with - it's also not the version of Namahage that's usually chosen.. but they have an incredible depth in their catalogue so hope we get lucky with the next one. Generally Heartless Scat official video is a good kick-off to the proceedings - they have no problem with reactions and have even recorded a few of their own

Please check the band's and the song's pronunciation out with the following Japanese by some voice functions of auto translation, '人間椅子' (Ningen Isu) and 'なまはげ' (Namahage).
I have been a big fan of BABYMETAL now, but before I found BM out at the end of 2019, I had been a fan of this Ningen Isu (Of course, now too). So I am very happy you took this band up. I am still not good at listening to English, but I listened to your reaction and review with my best.
The band was formed in 1987 and made its professional debut in 1990. They are the original / core members who are Shinji Wajima on the guitar and Kenichi Suzuki on the bass. So it has been active for over 30 years. I had been a fan of theirs since their debut, but I confess that I have forgotten about them for decades afterwards. I started listening to them again a few years ago and have recently managed to collect quite a few of their 20+ original albums. But really, I'm not really qualified to talk about them here in a glowing way since I'm an unqualified fan.. Although Ningen Isu (The Human Chair) is now popular in Japan and has gained many fans overseas, the band did not sell well until the 2010s, and Wajima, Suzuki, and the drummer Nakajima were all working part-time while continuing their band activities. They are very influenced by the HR/ HM of the 70s and profess to admire Black Sabbath, King Crimson, Kiss, and others. Unfortunately, however, it is a minor genre in Japan. Their songs pursue a uniquely their style of HR / HM, combining the HR /HM of the 70s which they revere, with the indigenous culture of their hometown, Northeast resion of Japan, and the literature of Japan in the Taisho and early Showa eras (about 1910's). I guess that's why they don't sell well, haha... Well, the many tempo changes in their original songs, are completely influenced by King Crimson, progressive rocks, I believe. The current drummer, Nobu Nakajima, is the fourth generation, and you are right, he has powerful and solid drumming. Ningen Isu's frequent changes of drummers might have been another reason for their difficulties, but the past three drummers were also all great drummers with their own unique characters of the drumming. I would even ask you to check out the songs of those drummers if you can. However, it has been no change of members since Nobu joined in 2004. Nobu is really a nice guy with a cheerful personality, and I guess that he had a very positive influence on the management of the band.
This live video is an encore from their 25th anniversary concert in 2015, and Wajima is wearing a T-shirt instead of his usual Kimono, so it's a very relaxed performance. As you astutely observed, the vocals might be the band's only weakness, lol. But bass player Suzuki also sings, and he has a nice voice with a lot of flavor. Drummer Nakajima also sings on rare occasions, but he may be the best, lol. I think the reason for the tempo change here at 10:47, is because it is Wajima's Shamisen※ solo part. Unfortunately you missed it? But I agree that it is a bit redundant for them to do tempo up and not immediately move to the shamisen guitar part, and then to the vocal line again, but the long structure is a characteristic of their music, in particular the songs written by Wajima, ha.
Namahage, the title of the song, refers to a kind of monster that is handed down in a small part of Akita Prefecture in the Northeast region of Japan. and go around scaring children with a knife in their hands. Of course, the parents stay by their children's side and listen to Namahage's sermon together, ha. Wajima's Shamisen guitar is well known in Japan among the fans, so check out the MV for this song or one of the other songs. Please react to more. Thank you from Japan.

Finally clicked on "heartless scat" that's been recommended by youtube to me for awhile. Enjoy their sound, and your review of this song.
Shortly after, a video of the guitarist, Wajima-san, discussing his pedal board came up, and was pretty interesting to watch (has english sub-titles), he apparently builds a lot of his own pedals/effects.

Hey David, i'd like to offer some insight as a fan of the band with only some Duolingo for Japanese under my belt (heh) and some interest in Japanese culture.
I second comments first off that the band is "Nin"(like ninny) "Gen" (think Ken with a GEH sound instead) and "Isu" (EEsu). Japanese doesn't do long or short sounds and its all polysylobic.
Secondly, what's cool for this band is that their name translates to "The Human Chair", which they picked after a short, classic Japanese horror story of the same name.
"Namahage" (NAA MAA HAA GAY) are demon characters in Japanese Kabuki theater who eat lazy kids. The chorus is basically the creature asking "ARE THERE ANY LOAFERS HERE? ARE THERE ANY CRYBABIES HERE?" Or something to that effect
I THIRD also Heartless Scat or The Colour Out Of Space (their tribute to Lovecraft) as your next listen. These guys are a bit like what Black Sabbath is to us here in the states, so they have a large catalogue.

A good song for any band.... but not for THIS band (legendary band with 30+ years career), especially as a debute on thi channel - I am very much surprised someone requested particulary this. Let me ask you why? I am not asking David. I am asking the requester. What were the reasons to pick this song? Do you really think this is the best introduction to the band of THIS legendary status?

    • @thesuperdak7224
      @thesuperdak7224 Рік тому +4

I suspect the requester included this as part of a group of Ningen Izu requests, but this is the one that got randomly picked for the vote. Nevertheless, I agree, it should have been Heartless Scat.

@@thesuperdak7224 Thank you for supporting this conversation. What I tried to say - is that this channel is not only about some "abstract score from an authority". Its about David himself. He encounters new bands and new songs. And If I was a requester I would definitely think what could make David happy? What is a good music that he will love to encounter? Why there are so many absolutely jaded requests here - where no way is possible that the Reviewer acn enjoy anything about the music or composition? If its not about the Author of the channel himself - then what else? Or whom else? If any guy want to listen to any song on UA-cam - he can simply click the link and listen. Without any reaction channel.... Is it even legal or ethical to enjoy the show where someone is getting purposely confused (by the request), sad, bored and e.t.c.? Why doesnt people think how awful it is to keep talking or find proper words to describe something you are completely indefferent with? Why waste your own time, the time of the Reviewer and the time of the Auditory? This whole thing is completely out of my Zone of Understanding.

Very difficult to find a 'good' Ningen Isu to start some one as a first listen. You may remember I mentioned on the Patreon Poll, that they have been going for years and have a prog rock sound reminiscent of the 1970's.
Namahage, is one of their shorter songs but glad you used the live version. I don't know much of their material but their songs are long and sitting and watching them at home playing on stage can get tedious because you are not their to witness the atmosphere and sound created by the three musicians.
Good score and I hope you get requested some more Ningen Isu.

It seems that David missed the point of the song, namely, taking the essence of Tsugaru shamisen into rock, which makes the band unique.

This review was my first "listen" of this track, and I felt the same as david, it seemed to be missing something. I just listened to the 30th aniversary disc version, and it felt a lot better. So I understand why it was suggested, and guess this version just doesn't do it justice. (only 2 listens though...maybe I'm just getting more used to thier sound)
