  • We’re always on a quest for a great steak house recommendation especially whenever we are in New York City and on this visit, we finally got to dine at KEENS STEAKHOUSE after a recommendation from a neighbor and the hotel concierge. Founded in the late 1885 by Albert Keen, just read its entire history in this link (keens.com ) .
What’s so peculiar about this restaurant which has several dining rooms occupying a 4-storey building are the so-called church warden or clay smoking pipes that are decked out in the ceilings numbering 90,000 establishing the reputation of holding the world’s largest collection.
Chuck ordered their legendary Mutton Chop that James Beard was quoted as saying in 1950: “Its essential muttony flavor puts everyday chops momentarily in a pale.” So, literally, Chuck just wanted to be able to say with gusto, while carving and scarfing on that gamey (I’d prefer using that term as anything having to do with lamb or sheep tends to merit that adjective from me) monumental chunks of meat that he is “a glutton for a mutton”. I was perfectly happy with my 8 oz. dry-aged Prime Filet Mignon.
Also, we just had to try its iconic dessert: Keen’s Red Berry Bibble which our server Robert (who can easily be Alan Cumming’s doppelgänger) gave such a foodilicious description (just watch the video) that we can’t resist getting one to share. Oh the charm of old school steakhouses. I’m still wowed by the astounding collection of clay smoking pipes.
