i use/like using Flax seed as the seeds hold the heat a bit longer AND is softer...but Flax seed isn't a favorite scent for everyone.. thanks for sharing your great video. I make these by the 100's....I take a big bag of them to church when its cold, raining...around here, is ALL the time here in the Pacific North WET!... and I give them to the older seniors who are always cold...I heat them up in the churches kitchen microwave oven OR take warmed.... You should see the smiles on their faces...and the ooooh's and aaaawsss heard around the church when they're settling in their cold pews. I purchase the flax seed for $25 for a 20 lb bag at feed store...where there's horses, theres inexpensive flax seed...much cheaper than grocery stores bulk section. Is easy to make, one...so make a few and share with a lonly, older person... keep in mind...what goes around, comes around!....Karma!
Crytears sunny ...BTW...i make these by the 100's....i used to use the rice or corn bits, but people love the flax seed much better as the heat last much longer.I got a very inexpensive oil funnel from our local car parts supply store....i use this to help fill the bags, especially when I top stitch 3 channels on top of the bags.. Just measure into 3 sections and sew two (2) long channels on the top, once you've sewn your sack and have it turned right side out and ready to fill...it helps hold the rice/corn, flax seeds stuffing in place.
This video is so incredibly helpful! At the start of the pandemic I was off of work for two months and I learned to sew by hand. These rice bags are so fun to make! I add essential oil to my rice as well :)
Thank you and no need to do a separate video for a removal cover. Just follow the instructions, but instead of closing both, leave the outside one open (you could put a button and button hole - but remember it's going in a microwave so check materials) and remove it for washing. Is velcro microwavable? So glad you enjoyed the content. Big Hugs.
Thanks for watching and great question. The material should be natural (like cotton) and felt can be made of many different fibers. So thinking it would depend on the type of felt you get. If made with synthetics, the felt will melt in the micro or get soggy in the freezer. Big Hugs
Excellent suggestion! I've been making mine with changeable covers as well. Sometimes people are sensitive to certain smells, so I'm careful not to scent unless I know what they prefer. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Big Hugs
Marumbo Mughogho For some reason, I cannot "reply" to your comment, so I'm hoping you will see it here. Polyester not only will melt, but it will release chemicals into the air. Please do NOT use poly. Use only 100 percent cotton. Thanks
Hi❣️🌿🐦 I have made mine using a man's knee high tube socks. They're effective but I like yours better, it's pretty. Thank you so much and God bless you..
My mom made these when I a kid to help with my constant growing pains. I make mine scented with lavender or chai tea smells to soothe and I like to make mine with changeable outsides so it can be washed. My mom's got so nasty after a while.
Yes, you can. I made it with 2 so it would be lined and there would be no chance for the rice to poke through. But if you have a tightly woven piece of cotton (use natural fibers, polyester will melt in the microwave) it should be fine.
@@PreciousMe Thanks, much appreciated. I made eye pillows for a friend and wanted it to be light enough for her eyes. It concerns me when I see videos of folks using other than cotton fabric, and cotton thread, and poly-pellets, which can melt in the microwave. Sounds like an accident waiting to happen. TA
I have MS and many times get overheated. I'm always looking for something to cool me down quickly. This looks like it will work very well. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much Wendy. They are easy to make and really useful. You can make them in different sizes too. I want to try an eye mask one. Happy Holidays!! Eva
Hello and thank you for this awesome video. I was wondering if there is any herb that can be use in the rice for aromatherapy? Like lavender for instance? Thanks again for sharing.
Absolutely! Lavender, Marjoram, Mint, Chamomile, Cloves, Catnip and more! the herbs should make up between 1/4 and 1/3 of the total volume of filler. You don't want too much, or there won't be enough grains to hold the temperature. You don't want too little, or the scent will not last for long. Thanks for watching and the awesome question! Hugs
ooh, thanks for this video! I'm about to make some little hand warmer rice bags, but it didn't occur to me they could also be done in a bigger size for cold therapy. (I've actually been dodging cold therapy for my neck because the usual gel/ice packs are a little too harsh for me; this might be nicer.) I'm going to try making one scented with lavender & peppermint to cool the eyes/forehead during migraines.
Sounds like an excellent idea. They are definitely gentler than the gel packs. My mom uses one for her neck and shoulder and can tolerate the cold. Good luck with the project and thanks for watching and commenting.
Instead of sewing the second end on the outside "cover" maybe put in buttons so you can remove the cover for cleaning? You ended up sewing the end so I was wondering what you would normally have done with this.
I'm thinking that buttons may not be microwave safe. Metal ones, definitely not. Velcro closures might work. Thanks for watching and commenting. Excellent idea.
I know you said you double up on the fabric for washing, but you stitched the second layer closed as well. How would you remove the outer layer for washing if it's stitched shut?
I really need to make this someday. I had a corn bag but it got a lot of little holes in it. I didn't make it and I don't know where my friend got it for me exactly..
Thanks for watching and your comment. I've not heard of corn bags, but sounds interesting. The rice bags are really easy to make and I hope you get to make one soon. Hugs
Wow now I know how to make a rice bag! Loving that video! I really enjoy watching your video very helpful and great ideals for gifts too made by hand! Thank you so much for sharing your video's and lots of love! Hope you have a Happy Holiday! :)
I love mine. Use it hot on my neck for headaches, 3 minutes in microwave gets very hot and lasts long. PS, the volume of the video is normal, good on my iPad.
Hi and thanks for watching and for your question. I don't see why not. I've only used white (inexpensive) and have had no problems. You can also use feed corn, if it's available to you. Hard to find where I am. Good luck on your project. Hugs
Hi there, I went out and got 100% cotton fabric, and then realized my thread is either 100% polyester or unlabeled!! :( Does the thread matter or is it just the fabric?
@aprilredding710 And you can make them in any shape you want. A friend needed one shaped for their knee and I could whip it up super fast. Just remember to use cottom material!! lol
As long as it's 100 percent natural material. Synthetic material will melt in microwave. Also be aware of metallic threads which are a no no in a microwave. Stay safe! Thanks for the question and for watching.
I've never seen it happen and been doing this for about 20 years. I believe the rice would only cook if it got wet. Thanks for watching and commenting.
With one layer of fabric, the fabric will be either too hot or too cold with the rice right below it. The second layer protects the skin from the extremes. Hope that makes sense and thanks so much for watching and the excellent question. Hugs
+Alyssa Ares For washing. You can remove the outer cover and launder it and then reuse. You won't be able to do that to the pouch filled with the rice. Hope this helps! Eva
+Ruth Freeman Really sorry that you had trouble with the volume. The video is almost 4 years old and you were the first to mention it. When I listen to it now, I find no problem. All computers and their settings are different. Wishing you the best.
To make the cover changeable you could sew the insert 1/2 inch shorter. Add velcro to the outerbag/cover.
Absolutely! Great idea.

Love the size. Would you be able to a video on how to make a removal cover, for easy wash? Thank you

Perfect project for spare or extra fabric. Thank you for posting!

Me too then the outer layer can be washed! Also I use unscented flax seed so there is no smell.

Hi❣️🌿🐦
I have made mine using a man's knee high tube socks. They're effective but I like yours better, it's pretty. Thank you so much and God bless you..
You must use 100% cotton thread too!
Thank you for making this tutorial it is exactly what I was looking for PERFECT and to the point. Great information too!!! Thanks again Evelyn Horsley
Thanks for watching and commenting Evelyn. So glad it helped and I hope your own project comes out fantastic. Big Hugs

Can you make this by using one piece of fabric? What is your reason for using two pieces of fabric and tucking one inside the other?

Tea bags also work well. Just open them up and add to bags ;)

Great tutorial. Thank you.
I would like to use oils, like lavender. Would you know how much I would use for 4 cups? Your instruction is great by the way.
Most recommend 20 to 30 drops of essential oil to 6 cups, so adjust accordingly. (15 to 25?) Thanks so much for watching and the great question!
Looks super easy. Definitely will make some of these.for gifts & myself. Thank you
I love mine. Use it hot on my neck for headaches, 3 minutes in microwave gets very hot and lasts long. PS, the volume of the video is normal, good on my iPad.
+Kip Burbank Thanks so much for the wonderful comment. I use mine for headaches as well. Thank you for the volume mention. Hugs
How? I made one and it lasted for only 10 min.
alexetr fomilv8 I cook it 3.5 minutes so it's very very hot. Now I have two, one is double sized.
It won't burn?
I suppose it may burn if you leave it in the microwave for a long time. Keep it simple and only for a minute or two. I have never had a problem.
Does polyester melt?
Thanks for the video.can i use towel instead of cotton fabric?
As long as your towel contains no metal tags, or weights like many decorative towels have, then yes you can microwave a towel to warm it.
Can you use any kind of rice. Thank you for this wonderful video.
Hi and thanks for watching and for your question. I don't see why not. I've only used white (inexpensive) and have had no problems. You can also use feed corn, if it's available to you. Hard to find where I am. Good luck on your project. Hugs
I wouldn't use brown rice because the fats in the rice will turn rancid over time. Plain long grain white rice is best.
excellent idea! again, just make sure no synthetic materials if you are putting in the micro. Hugs

Can you use Flannel ?
As long as it's 100 percent natural material. Synthetic material will melt in microwave. Also be aware of metallic threads which are a no no in a microwave. Stay safe! Thanks for the question and for watching.
Do you have to have two layers?
I made 2 so I can wash the outside one and keep the inside one clean. You can't wash once it's stuffed. But you do you!
Will the rice have weivers in them because they can eat clothes
Heating in the microwave should kill weevils or any other insect pest that may be in the rice.
Won't the rice start to cook after a few times in the microwave?
I've never seen it happen and been doing this for about 20 years. I believe the rice would only cook if it got wet. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Can I use polyester? ??
I wouldn't. It may melt in the microwave. It would be fine for an ice pack though.
Oh thank you
I use Polyester fleece all the time for many years. I have never had a problem. The fleece gives a nice very moist heat.
Why do you double the fabric?
With one layer of fabric, the fabric will be either too hot or too cold with the rice right below it. The second layer protects the skin from the extremes. Hope that makes sense and thanks so much for watching and the excellent question. Hugs
Why did you double up the fabric? It makes no sense to me to have the rice stuffed into a pillow casing and then put it into another empty pillow.
+Alyssa Ares For washing. You can remove the outer cover and launder it and then reuse. You won't be able to do that to the pouch filled with the rice. Hope this helps! Eva
+EvaEvaEva923 oooh okay. Now I understand thanks and also for the quick response.
@evaevaeva923 how do you remove the outer cove. Is it not double stitched together at both ends?
Do you sell these?
Hi bella watkins. No, I do not sell them. I have seen them being sold at craft fairs though and they are super easy to make. Thanks for watching.
Can i use felt?
Use pure cotton
hot pack is fantastic but cooling is not that effective
you cant hear what u are saying... the volume is way down
+Ruth Freeman Really sorry that you had trouble with the volume. The video is almost 4 years old and you were the first to mention it. When I listen to it now, I find no problem. All computers and their settings are different. Wishing you the best.
