    Looks very exciting. It's amazing to have this amount of power available for such a good price. Will definitely be investing.

    Wow, that low note that keeps droning under the high stuff at 25:38 has got a nice sort of "buzz" or "snarl" to it, and also a cool harmonic in there at one point (probably due to a phaser effect somewhere?)...

    As the GX-1 is basically an Organ. People have to think a little different. The 4 step pot's used for the different "stops" eg 16'/8' etc. Flute, trumpet, trombone violin .. was a combo of the old way of stops from church organs and copy of the Hammond "Drawbar" model with 9 steps where you "draw'' out the fader towards you for the sound to get louder. which is oposite of how a moders synth usually is layed out plus the fact that electronic Organs and early string machines is paraphononic instead of mono/polyphonic.
    So the the GX-1 is litteraly derived from a paraphonic sound engine design where you combine a set of electronic filters that make the different sounds, but you only have 1 envelope for all those registrations which make the sound shaping much less advanced than a polyphonic synth where you have eg 8 filter and 8 volume envelopes for a basic 8voice poyphonic synth. This gives much more control of each note as every note have its own filter and volume control. The drawback is you only have a max of 8 notes playable at once, where a Paraphonic synth can sound all eg. 61 keys at once.
    On a typical Organ they had to add a new paraphonic sound generator for eg. percussive and plucked sounds like piano, guitar to get the best sound, another for slow attack sounds like strings, one for "solo" sounds like brass and woodwind etc because of they were limited to that one envelope filter/amp.
    So it's a trade off between playing many notes at once and having more advanced sounds. Either way the more tonegenerators and frequency dividers you add to get more tone combis or the more envelope generators you add to get more polyphony the steeper and more advanced the instrument get when made primarily with discrete components that were available in the early 50's to the start 70's.
    Try have a look inside one of the bigger 70's home organs or for that matter the inside of the CS-80. It's a miracle that some of those instruments still work today (the few off them that actually do work) and it's an absolutely nightmare to try to fix'em even for a trained repair guy that has the knowledge of working with this kind of retro gear.

      The GX-1 appeared in Yamaha's "Electone" line, which was organs, and it's shaped like an organ. It even has a pedalboard where you can play two octaves of bass notes with your feet, along with three "manuals" -- i.e., keyboards. Its sound design may also, as you say, resemble an organ, but it is nonetheless a synthesizer, and a very powerful one in its own way. Gordon Reid of Sound on Sound, who actually owns one, even described it as 36 synthesizers in one! But you have to have the programming box, which I think was an extra, to be able to program it. Otherwise, it's just massive presets.

    I admit I'm still very confused about the oscillator routing - all those different sources, some switched, some on faders, some going through the VCF, some bypassing it. I DEFINITELY need a block diagram.

      The sine wave bypasses filtering because technically you cannot filter a sine wave. well... you can... but not in the way people would expect. when filtering sine waves, because they are pure tones with no harmonics, you are really attenuating them. this is why the sine does not go through the filter section where as the "richer" wave shapes are filtered by comparison.

      @@jamescuttsmusicjcm5013 Oddly enough, that's the part that confused me the least :) It's all the other stuff that I couldn't follow - some sources are switched, others on faders, it's not clear when they are active etc. Block diagram would sort this out for me instantly. I hope (and assume) the synth comes with one in its documentation!

      @@macronencer Well... the orange slider versions of the other waves can be prefiltered before they hit the filter section - these are the GX-1 versions (colour coded in orange). the switched versions are from the CS-80 and can only be on or off. These are filtered only during the filtering stage.
      EDIT: It is worth noting that you can enable both at the same time too though. So for example, you can have a CS-80 square wave, combined with a pre-filtered GX-1 square wave blended in on the slider. :).

      @@jamescuttsmusicjcm5013 Thanks - I'll make a note of all that and watch the video again. Maybe it will fall into place this time, but I really wish there were a diagram - I find them far easier than words, perhaps because I have aphantasia (I can't make mental images).

    • @mrdali67
      @mrdali67 Рік тому

      Yes it do support mpe functions. This is perfect to be used with eg. an ASM Hydrasynth as it has both polyphonic AT and Ribbon controller (the Explorer model with mini keys don't have ribbon ctrl) but still Poly AT) and is a nice little 8voice synth in itself. Most modern VST3' plugins support mpe functions as the ver 3 was all about getting support for Midi 2.0 and how to mitigate the delays of it and give you posibilities of recording these controls without a mpe or midi 2.0 controller. We are just waiting on Midi 2.0 still like a decade later that it was announced 😐
