  • MotoMan takes a second look at ‪@LucidMotors‬ as their Lucid Air lineup begins to take shape by driving the 819 HP Lucid Air Grand Touring. He kicks off this deep dive on an unusual collaboration between Silicon Valley & Detroit/Germany/Japan by presenting what makes the people and company behind the Lucid Air special. Then from different interactions with the Lucid Air from driving to charging, he presents a very honest state of the Lucid Motors world.

As a Grand Touring owner, I greatly enjoy the vehicle. I have not had issues with the screen freezing, but before the 2.0 updates the Bluetooth pairing with my iPhone was admittedly unstable. It has greatly improved since and is only a matter of time before the software is as refined as the hardware.

I got mine in what they call Zenith Red, a great color that changes with the light. Yes, everywhere I go it gets lots of attention. For me, the Bluetooth has been flawless, but every new car from a new company will have some growing pains I suppose. *EDIT* I got Apple CarPlay in an OTA update last night! Did the update from my phone, walked out to the car, and CarPlay loaded right up.

I got to test drive the Grand Touring. It was so nice! The ride and handling felt really good. My only real complaints were the old BMW style tune signals (where they don’t stay in place after you press them which I found very annoying) and the lack of smoothness in the regenerative braking. I like how strong the regenerative braking but I think it should have a smoother initial slowdown. But, I’m sure it’s something you can get used to. It is missing a lot of the novelties from the new i7 and the S-class so I can’t help but think that this car is the ultimate E-class or 5-series.

Great review of an interesting car! Have seen several on the road in S. FL and they really stand out in traffic with their beautiful design. Unlike big Teslas, the Lucid Air has an interior befitting a luxury vehicle. At this price point, it doesn’t exactly appeal to the masses. Which is fine and all to an extent; however, had they released an SUV first, think about the potential price point on that compared to the Air - sounds insanely expensive to me. Even less market appeal/access, and subsequently fewer sales and less market exposure. Low sales can be tough on a start-up (aka those folks buying up all that stock 😉). Great review. I did cross shop the Lucid when I purchase my Tesla Model S LR. Unfortunately, in the Midwest not a lot of opportunity to drive or get service.
I do like the interior and the range of the Lucid, but the exterior design gives me Mercury Sable vibes.
Blown away the charging tech actually worked away from home. If any EV is going to compete with Tesla, they need to get their charging game going.
So many road trips where I would pass faulty chargers either on the road or at hotels. Never have had a bad experience charging the Tesla.
Would like to see Tesla include some of the Lucid interior style touches.
In the end Tesla won for me (even with its faults) Due its price (full price Plaid half the price of the Lucid Saphire), Availity to charging network, and relative closeness to Tesla service center.

In addition to your comments about complexity i also noticed a few issues in paint quality and panel alignment in the few Lucid's i have seen, lets hope they will be ironed out soon, and not continue for years like in some Tesla Models, even after 10 years they still suffering some QC issues.
As with regard to the UX, i really don't know what to say, the whole industry is gone crazy with screen and touch sensitive surfaces which are utterly dangerous, being an insider, i understand why they do it (i can explain to you privately) but i cannot agree with it at all, it is so dangerous !! So i thought Lucid being a new company would be going in a different direction but sadly they are not.
All those UX's will age very badly, i tried to use one of my old iPhone 6 the other day and i just couldn't use for more than a few minutes. Now imagine an unusable car in 10 years time !!!

As someone who loathes the feeling of driving automatic transmissions in gas cars, good one pedal driving (see: Chevrolet Bolt) is a must for me in any EV, so that it doesn't feel like an automatic. Any EV which drives itself forward when you take your foot off the brake (fake transmission creep) is instantly unacceptable in my book.

You asked the wrong question (3:45): it's not "why didn't they make an SUV?", but rather "why didn't they make a hatchback?" One of the worst problems about regular sedans that makes them unappealing to most buyers is the standard trunk, which is very impractical for most people. Also, I'd like to see that frunk space used to hold a full-size spare wheel/tire -- the whole point of having long-range batteries being long road trips where you might be really stuck with a flat tire if no spare. For a Nissan Leaf, which you'd ostensibly only drive close to home, you would never need a spare wheel/tire, but in the Lucid, it should be at least an option (if not standard).

@@vickykennel7414 sure, but you miss the point: the reason for a long-range battery and low coefficient of drag (< 0.2) is to drive long distances...

I spoke to one of the designers a few years ago about that when they were showing the prototype in Carmel-by-the-sea at Car Week. He said that hatch backs are more noisy, and they wanted this car to be more luxurious. He also told me it would be much better than Tesla and much cheaper. haha

Excellent review. I’ve considered getting one, but not until they fix those issues. I’m not spending $150,000 and finding I don’t have Apple car play.

Once up-on a time, Padmé was on a Formular 1 circit, but unfortunatly, she becaum a vicktum of Mad Max. She tryd to escaip on Ruot 666 in a 2000 hp Supra, bekaws she herd it was the fastist car arownd. The earf was gettting hottrr and hottrr, and she new she had to leave befor it was too late.
As she was driving, she met a 95-year-old Telsa invister who was ridiing in a self-drayving car. He was verry ritch and offored to mary her so she could inherit his fortune when he dies. Padmé thoht it was a good idea and agried to marry him.
But even tho she was maryed to a ritch man, she stil had feelins for a Chad who was moor interested in his poster of a Lucid Air than her. She was disapointed that he wouldn't commit to her and wanted to be with the poster instead.
In the end, Padmé was happy with her ritch husband and they livd happily evr after.

Too bad they can’t sell many of them. There’s not much of a market for luxury EV sedans.

Nice car, I don’t care for it. My Plaid is miles ahead of everything except that Limo feel (leather, fancy stuff not related to my driving experience). Big 17” screen, rear hatchback is so nice, easy to use controls, stereo is amazing, clean interior, air ride suspension that I can choose my ride, traction control options ( automaticaly raises when needed with memory), Software is so nice, (free updates. Too much nice stuff to list. Now the negative: fit isn’t perfect (close enough for me). Back seat isn’t limo size like 750 BMW. (I don’t sit back there, so I don’t want it. Also blind spot right front for parking near curbs. Car is dated, but that is why I love it. American cars failed because they never figured out Elon’s success formula. Tesla Superchargers so nice! (I watch Netflix while charging , but charging is too fast and can’t finish my movie. Oh and no car is faster, so much fun, my grand kids love it!

Stereotypically 'start-up'; lots of good innovation and choice, mixed with some basic shortfalls. Not currently available In Oz. Probably overpriced given its shortfalls. But desrving of constructive criticism, not trolling.

the ground clearance of this car not good for new york at all,
i have seen it in front of me driving and i was like this is not good ground clearance at all,
as a matter of fact most of these ev's do not have good ground clearance especially when u know the skateboard style battery pack is sitting right at the bottom dead centre!!!!
one more thing i really don't like is the dry weight of these ev's is just insane compare to their gasoline powered sized cars.
    not good.

The Lucid is what Tesla wishes it could be. From the standpoint of build quality and fit and finish. Sure, Lucid will have to tweak some shortcomings after the first few models years, but it’s so much better looking than the bland Tesla. Not to mention the interior of the Tesla makes you want to be Stevie Wonder 😎
