I was born in Alabama. I have lived in Alabama, Texas, Florida, Mississippi and Virginia and a total of 3 other Continents (Africa, Europe and the Middle East). I ended up back in my hometown in Alabama and built a house in the middle of a 1000 Acre Wilderness Area. My neighborhood consists of 18 houses all on 2-3 Acre Estates. Well I was born and raised in North Alabama now live on the West coast. Have relatives and friends all over the state. Miss my home state but not all the rain and storms. However, that is what makes it so beautiful. I was surprised about the crime increase. I hope Alabama does not have the problems California has with housing. I guess we will have to live in tents.

Moved there for about a year. People didn't want anything to do with me or my children, called them dam yankees. Found out because my daughter came in to ask me what a dam yankees was. My answer was " it means you are a good loving person".

Alabama is a great state in many ways and it's growing fast, but yet it's not in other areas of it. It has a lot of work still to do. Crime is a huge issue in the state and i can't believe THE GOVERNOR WHY SHE hasn't step in and tried to get a handle on this big problem like many governors across the US need to do, to officially correct it with law enforcement!! WTF!! But all 50 states have negatives and if someone from those states tell you they don't, they told you the biggest lie ever!! I'm orig. from Alabama but live in Pennsylvania and i can tell you that Pa. has a lot and i mean a lot of negatives, this is a bull crap state!! starting with the weather, high crooked taxes. they run a good ole boy set up in the state, the bad government how they run the state. a bad governor, more bad roads and bridges still need done, people can be cool or ok but so many of them have that nasty northeast mindset, or attitude so you really got weed out the good people here, better economy ,bad crooked politicians, a bad crooked good ole boy road maintenance dept. call PENNDOT!! and the list goes on!! any state you move too , you take the good and the bad depending what you wanna deal with.

Glad to see the good reports, but please if anyone thinks about moving here, please leave behind all the bad things you are running from. You know, " when in Rome, do as the Romans". Don't ruin the south with failed northern or west coast social liberalism. Keep Alabama taxes and living expenses lower than the rest of the nation by not taxing the people into oblivion. Oh, and I am one of those with a bachelor's or above that live in Bama and wouldn't trade my conservative southern principles.

I haven't been there, so you'd have to look at some google street views to see the architecture (or visit), but the crime rate is lower than most of Alabama, yet higher than most cities in the US. Chance of being a victim of violent crime is 1 in 2100 (vs 1 in 196 for Alabama as a whole). Housing is spiking at 21%, and is around 240k on average, with expensive houses on the outskirts at 400k+.

it's a small city/ large town that's really peaceful and has alot of affordble homes if you can find any up for sale the only down side is when people get housing they tend to stay there for years which i think is an actual good thing but the crime rate is very low compared to other cities, but the town has everything u need and its close enough to major cities like Birmingham, Huntsville and etc. for commuting for jobs or business and has a great school system in the city but stay away from the county schools if you can. So overall one of the better cities I've lived in and been to.
