Naruto is an iconic anime with a rich, fictional world, however, when Masashi Kishimoto created that world, he was drawing from culture in the real world. In this video, I will do my best to break down the real-world Mythology, History & other culture referenced in Naruto. I hope you enjoy it.

Naruto’s sexy jutsu is inspired by the folklore that the nine tailed fox spirit has the ability to transform itself into a pretty lady.
Not just the nine-tailed fox but any fox has been said to have that ability.
@@atsukorichards1675 Yep. It's a kitsune thang. 🦊

Let's take a moment to appreciate this guy's research.
Just every Hindu know these facts
@@god-gloryofdrawing6105 That's true. But many Naruto fans(in the West for example ) are not familiar with Hindu religion or the various Asian folklores referenced in Naruto .
I'm Hinduism and I have so much respect for Masashi's Kishimoto's choice to dig into our culture and create my favourite anime of all time Naruto.
I knew most of these.
he didn't really do any real research. If he had he would have known about Flame of Recca. He was completely unaware of it's existence before making this video and is probably to up his own ass to even acknowledge it now. But yeah, his "research" was a lazy google search he probably did on his phone with voice assistant in English using Google translate. He's deliriously unaware of Naruto's hilarious array of translation errors.
So absolutely no. Let's not take any moments to appreciate lazy uninspired BS.
I love learning the history behind my favorite anime.

Rock Lee’s drunk combat is a clear reference to Jackie Chan as Drunken Master. Drunken Master is not a mythology tho))))
Ushakov Sergey
Actually drunken combat is an ancient style and its origins are mainly traced back to the Buddhist and Daoist sects. The Buddhist style is related to the Shaolin temple while the Daoist style is based on the Daoist tale of the drunken Eight Immortals.

Black flame from Amaterasu was inspired by Hindu deity Lord Shiva's third eye black flame that destroyed everything.
Indra and Asuka, Garuda, I found their reference in places like Angkor Wat at Cambodia.
Shin susenju and 6 path pain were referring to Buddhism
Think you will do a video on that.
@@kushaal1025 yeah ur right
Ametersu is also like a sun god or something i think
Angkor Wat is originally a Hindu temple converted to buddhism it was built by a hindu king because at that time Cambodia ,Thailand,Indonesian and other asian kingdoms followed Hinduism or we can say Sanatan dharma
@@SujalChandelS yeah, i actually saw the third eye on the famous smile faces
also rinnegan means samsara eye which is why it can make the six paths
The fact that I have seen this at university in Japanese religion, mythology and philosophy, and yes, our professor used Naruto too. These classes are always fun
Fun fact: Kishimoto the creator of naruto and the creator of one piece are rivals since there friends they decided to put references in there anime’s

Ninjas were known for having the ability to walk on water, so in Naruto most of the ninjas with chakra control are shown to have this ability.

Great research but you missed out a few things.
Indra and Asura were taken from Hindu Mythology too, Indra is the god of thunder and Asura is demon.
In many episodes of naruto you can find scrolls or messages written in the "Devnagiri lipi" which was in Ancient times and still is a writing style in India.

Well, if you start doing hand signs in the middle of fight nowadays your opponent is likely to shit themselves and run for the hills so it's kinda right. I guess.
Spells are real lmao
If you are a fellow writer, remember that many of those references happens naturally. The author not necessaraly seat down and said "i'm going to do something similar to this or to that." what probably happened, this based on my little experience, was that he consumed a lot of things and then let himself be inspired by everything.

In a way it is like a fruit smooth. You consciously catch a bunt of fruits but the blend just happens.
Makes sense now why Jiraya and some other people in Naruto kept saying that a shinobi is someone who endures...because it can literally be translated that way

I've been subbed to Antony for a few years. His videos are always no-bullshit when it comes to shinobi.
Little bit of clarification, mantra are not incantations per se. They are invocations of buddhas, gurus, or gods. They are usually done with the belief that the sound energy put out in the universe will come back to you. In that respect, they are more like short prayers. Also, mudras are hand gestures that communicate a specific meaning. Like, placing your hands, one on top of the other, with the thumbs touching sybolizes meditative equipoise.
Mudras also help in disciplining and training your body and is essential in indian yoga
They are dedicated to Indian gods
Naruto is my favorite anime so that is why this vid is amazing
Good video! People in the west might claim that this show has little to do with real ninja, but besides the exaggeration, it's really no less faithful than fantasy novels are to European folklore.
EDIT: I think the only other piece of japanese folklore I can provide are names. For example, the legendary Sasuke Sarutobi provided the name for Sasuke and the Sarutobi-Clan.
I also remember a deeper connection between the Nara-Clan of Konoha and deer, as well as between puppet-wielding and the Sand, but that might be a subject for the Shippuuden-video.
Those sort of people have zero exposure to real Japanese media outside of cheesy low grade American films from decades ago or super hero comics.
Is his sexy no justu somehow linked to fox spirits being seductress's in some legends, you think? Great video
Ha, maybe. I think it was more for comic relief.
Yes it is. Proof of this is that in the Naruto oneshot manga when naruto does sexy jutsu he has a fox tale. It's a clear reference to what you said.

Hyuuga clan's martial arts are a reference to a combination of Bagua Zhang and concept/practice called Dim Mak which focuses on striking TCM meridian points in various orders/combinations. (Brilliant to pair with byakuugan)
Also the theme of Senju and Uchiha strongly mimic Buddhist (Hashirama summoning Kannon/Avaloketishvara figures makes this obvious) and Shinto themes accordingly and their influences. Asura-Hashirama-Naruto spirit in some ways mimics some of the personality and influence of Shotoku Taishi.
Many Indian gods are still enshrined in Japanese Buddhist temples.
Also, 呪術 (JYU-JYUTU) and 密教 (Mikkyo) are still ongoing.
Most people don't care about it in their daily lives, but it naturally exists there.
Nice exploration of the mythology of the shinobi, and in particular of things like how the "Hidden Village" concept came to be. First I'd actually heard of it, though I'd heard of the Iga and Koga clans before this. This makes the legendary Iga shinobi Kirigakure Saizo make much more sense, if the Iga village was in a misty valley. Of course, a legendary shinobi from a misty village would be associated with mist and illusion...which pretty clearly ties right back into characters like Zabuza and Haku.
One small nitpick, though: pretty sure that Susanoo is pronounced with a glottal, given that it's also transliterated as Susano'o/Susano-o, or even Susanowo. "Su-sa-no-oh", not "Susan-oh".
Appreciate This You Helpin Us Be How Creator Made Us Ta Be 🤘🏽
猿 saru , means monkey in case nobody has mentioned that. I was introduced to Naruto during the orochimaru Vs sarutobi fight so when enma was summoned and turned into the stick I got the first folklore reference there.

Part of what makes the Naruto world so rich and vibrant is the well of mythological influences from everywhere. Some Hindu mythology is there :
Indra and Asura

In Hindu mythology, Indra was a deity (known as Devas) that wielded lightning bolts, and did battle with the evil and power hungry Asuras. You can see a role reversal here, but there’s definitely a reason this lightning attack:

is called Indra’s Arrow. Furthermore, the mythological wielded a bow too… the rainbow. The godly versions made an appearance on a Naruto front spread:

Asura:

Indra:

Enma

Its Japanese name is Henge: Kongō nyoi.
“Kongō” is the Japanese translation for Vajra, a ritualistic object/weapon wielded by the mythological Indra above. It’s also a Sanskrit word meaning “thunderbolt” and “diamond”, which is referred to in the object’s meaning as the object is supposed to represent diamond’s toughness and force of thunder.

Enma is also the Japanese translation for “Yama”, the Hindugod who decides where people go after they die.
Garuda

Sasuke’s hawk is called Garuda. In Hindu mythology, Garuda is a bird man and often seen as “king of the birds”.

His depictions vary between more birdlike and more human though.
Yashamaru

The first kanji in his name “夜叉” (Yasha) is the Japanese way of saying “Yaksha”. In Hindu mythology, a Yaksha is a kind of spirit that is usually benevolent, but also has a darker and more sinister side. There’s a clear parallel here, where Yashamaru is normally nice but had to be cruel to young Gaara on his last mission.

Rinnegan’s Six Paths

Each of the path names are connected with Hindu mythology. We’ve covered Asura and Deva, but there is still two to cover:
Preta: Ghostly looking supernatural beings that endure unabating suffering as they seek to try and satiate relentless hunger and thirst. Of course, Naruto’s Preta Path is about guzzling an opponent’s chakra.
Naraka: The realm of hells where souls go to be cleansed of their sins. This is the place that Yama resides, and decides the fates of souls. This ties in with Naruto’s Naraka Path being the ability to control life and death. There’s an old Japanese saying that was used to scare kids into telling the truth… “"If you lie, Lord Enma will pull out your tongue" The King of Hell of course, could do that.
Hashirama’s Mokuton
His wood dragon resembles a Makara from Hindu mythology:

Shinsuusenju is also influenced by the Hindu-Buddhist creation of Avalokiteśvara:

Also known in Japanese as the Senju Kannon.
Hyuga Juinjutsu
In the manga, the symbol on the middle of the seal is a swastika, an important symbol in Hinduism.

Because of the connotations with Nazism it has gained in the West though, the anime changed it to a normal cross:

2. Naruto's jumpsuit in the OG series and Shippuden are a reference to the sort of clothes Kishimoto used to wear when he was a kid.
3. Rock Lee is a reference to Bruce Lee (i'm pretty sure everyone knows this though).
4. The "Rasen" in Rasengan means spiral.
sometimes I really have this sympathy towards my fellow weebs in the "western countries", because you guys literally have to watch videos like this just to understand only the surface of the meanings of some words while there are much more meanings behind even one character in our language.
True, but isn’t that the case for any work of art, regardless of the medium, that’s available to other cultures? And it isn’t limited to just cultural differences but generational as well… But the fun is learning more and not sticking at the surface level or just taking things at face value. That’s how cultural appropriation begins-when people lack the curiosity and respect to understand and appreciate something that they’re not inherently apart of (culturally speaking).
Awesome video. I'm doing a project for an English class where I have to compare two similar fictional texts and I'm doing Naruto and Harry Potter. This was a huuuuuge help with my research. Thanks man!!

In the manga series, Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru, there's a character from a family of self-styled Ninjas who takes the whole charade seriously and calls himself Saizou (reference to Kirigakure Saizou of the Sanada Ten Braves), and he's fighting against a ninja fanboy who calls himself Jiraiya, but is actually a Brazilian guy with the surname Gracian (a reference to the Gracie family).
In his fight, he actually uses a Katon ninjutsu, and the interesting play they made on the hand seals was that he was hiding combustible fluids inside little packets stuffed under his gloves, and the hand seals were actually him bursting each of those packets so that the fluid would drip out and he could light it on cue by spitting out an oxidizer. Still pretty near impossible, but at least they tried to give those hand movements some kind of pseudo-realistic meaning.

Susanoos armor was probably inspired by samurai but Susanoo is the shinto god of the storm he is also the brother of Amaterasu and they are the kids of Izanagi and Izanami. All Uchiha jutsus are based on shinto mythology. Tsukuyomi is the moon god.
