There are so many different suggested methods of seasoning cast iron. I really like this one and I think I'll adopt it as mine. Thanks for making this video.
I always havea knife on me and perhaps I am to gingerly with mine. When i seen the Spiderco I was like " Nice knife". Then I seen you start to tap the ppie irons and was like " Noooooooo , Please help me !" After my heart palpitations slowed , I enjoyed the video. Thanks for the information . Headng to get my grill hot and bothered!
Quick question, like a dope, I packed the pie iron in our gear.. got to camp, and realized I hadn't seasoned them we went ahead and made pie iron pizzas anyhow, after melting off the wax coating in the fire. Only debris on them was some burnt toast, nothing sticky. Cleaned them up, didn't submerge, just used a brush and a little soapy water. Wondering now though, can I season them and hopefully prolong the life? I know that I have bought used cast iron pans before that were a little rusty and I was able to clean them up and season them and they've lasted well, hoping I can season this pie iron and preserve it. Thoughts? Guess it can't hurt to try
Joel, the pre-season is just to make sure they don’t rust on you in the short term. It’s to replace the manufacturers wax and get you started in the right direction. Over time you will get more and more micro layers of carbon that will help with anti-rust as well as keeping them non-stick. At any time you can give them a good scrub and spruce them up a bit more by following this video. A rule that I follow, use as little fat as possible. There is absolutely no need to cake it on just to have it all wiped or drip off.
Probably one of the best, clearest videos about seasoning cast iron I've seen. Well done.

Thanks for mentioning the temperature. This is the only one I have found that does.

Lol @ "get your grill all hot and bothered"
Love the video! I love the idea of using the grill for seasoning CI. I'll have to give it a try. 🤗

Is it a total of 15 for each cycle, flipping at 7.5 minutes? Or 15 minutes for each side, so 30 minutes per cycle?
Lard is also a good source of oil for them. :)
You’re right, shortening is full of trans fat which has a direct link th heart disease. So it’s lard for me.
How do you clean between uses on a camping trip with no grill only a fire.
Just separate the two halves and bake em again
Being new to trying this, What are the Advantages, of buying either the Square on,? Or the Round one.?
All depends what you're planning to cook. I have both. Pies n pizzas in the round, grilled cheese n hot hammies in the square.
Why limit yourself... I collect everything cast iron and we have 3 different sizes and multiple of each.
Wipe off all the excess oil before you put it back on the grill.
Much more easier than Seasoning a big Cast Iron Pan, Or Dutch oven.
What do you do if you just used them and did not season them? Do you just clean them with sos pad and then do this? Why do you season them?
They are made of cast iron and will rust.
Because they are made of cast iron and will rust.
Great video.
Do you oil them after you are done seasoning them with vegetable oil or shortening like you used before?
APPARENTLYaPRINCESS You can put a light coat of oil on them for storage.
What kind oil?
Very light coat of vegetable oil...apply with a paper towel.
ok thanks!
a good quality canola oil is fine
This Seasoning will most likely work on my Charcoal Grill also, As I do not own a Gas type Grill.
MyREDTAIL - Arguably charcoal is better!
