Experienced him today as Scarpia in Baden-Baden. It was AMAZING! His Te Deum... one of the opera moments I will remember forever. Stole completely the show! Usually I am very happy when Scarpia is dead but this time I was nearly sad🤣.
Agree completely. Schrott understands that as soon as the Te Deum begins, Scarpia has to look startled; that's the only way his next line, "Tosca, you make me forget God" makes any sense. He HAS forgotten God, since, as you said, his mind was miles away.
Saw him tonight at roh - bloody wonderful. Great tone and blew the orchestra out of the pit. Extraordinarily menacing. Ironically Bryn Terfel qas in teaudience. Seen him mnt timesainging same role. Happy Christmas and thank you.
In the presence of the consecrated host, for Catholics God , Scarpia says Tosca you make me forget God. In effect renouncing God in God's presence. He has committed the ultimate act of evil, thus Schrott is unable to make the sign of the cross. (nice theatrical touch)
Amazing! This portrayal of Scarpia is dead on. Ordinariness on the outside but evil inside. So often the evil wear a mask of acceptability. Of course, this is wonderfully inspiring and strangely uplifting. What a sense of irony Puccini had.
Me encanta tu voz y tu carisma.Un saludo desde Uruguay,éxitos!! Colonia, Nueva Helvecia.Tu abuelo Bettoven era mi tío.Un orgullo ,muy picaresco y simpático.🇺🇾🤗🤗
Somptueuse voix de basse chantante d’Erwin Schrott, jeu scénique intéressant. Bravo Cher Monsieur Schrott.trop peu connu en Europe. ❤️🎶❤️🎶❤️🎶❤️🎶🌹🎶🌹🎶🌹🎶🌹🎶
That's the point of Scarpia's character. He is irresistible and rich but evil to the core. Tosca resisted and she chosen the right moral path, she remained faithful to her loved one, that's what makes her a strong and brave character. Unfortunately most actors play an old, grumpy and ugly Scarpia, missing the entire point of this opera.
@@PatrizzaEatsApizza I also liked Hampson, who was not only illegally hot in the role but also sang it like he would sing Mozart. I never really realized just how many beautiful melodies Scarpia has and I listened to the De Sabata recording daily when I was a teen.

Very impressive. I always had the impression that he is a baritone. Although his voice worked well as a bass, now it is clear that this is the best repertoire for him.
He is a Baritone.......and Scarpia is scored for baritone.............not a Bass. Schrotte sings Escamillo and other baritone roles. He does not sing Don Carlos or stuff Ezio Pinza or Cesare Siepi sang......
Impressive looking and sounding, but seemed a little stilted in the acting dept. Have another look at him in this role in a year or so. I'll bet there's a quantum leap.
Very strong and the beautiful voice. In my opinion needs to have little bit more of the Italian breathing technique. But the voice is very pure and strong ! Bravo !

A Scarpia who is also a person, a human being. Excellent !
A phenomenal voice emanating from an extremely handsome man who is capable of HONEST, legitimate emotional expression. What more could one ask?
And Shrott gave me shivers again... Thank you for sharing it!
Wow. That was intense. He inhabits this role. great acting. He’s startled when he hears the choir behind him… because his mind was miles away.

Very attractive Scarpia...
Love his interpretation here. He's so shaken by his emotions during the Te Deum he nearly loses it
He hisses like a snake when he says “va tosca “…. As if he isn’t human. So different from all other scarpias. Wow.

Good observation

Now that's what you CALL a Scarpia! Absolutely wonderful ❤
Genial performance querido Erwin.
Erwin is such a good man that it's impossible to see him in this role
Szeretem, mindenben, köszönöm, hogy Budapesten többször láthattam. Hang, színészi teljesítmény, hitelesség ! :)
Piekny mezczyzna, piekny glos i niepowtarzalny urok osobisty. Brawo .
I absolutely love Erwin’s voice, great debut of Scarpia .
Brilliant,evil, magnificent
Ecco un artista!!! 😉

Bavo
Frankly, he's so handsome any Tosca in her right mind would tap that XD

Evil to the core? Yet he still believes in God (he sings about how Tosca makes him forget God)
Yes. He is. I would if I was.
@@jakeforrest it's almost as if... religion doesn't automatically make a person intrinsically good.
Großartig!!! ❤❤❤
Fantastic...great voice and ....Tosca got to him!
bravo!
I always thaught the opera should have been named Scarpia instead of Tosca - just found the right one :) Bene, bene
Thanks for posting!
A great singer and actor! The best Scarpia!

@@michaelashby1067 Pinza sang South Pacific and so did Schrott, but that's musical theatre.
Say, this is very intense! I think even Tito would approve of the acting on this! Where was this? It looks like they set it in the 1920s.
Scarpia avec le visage de Mario. Surprenant!
Oui!!
Very good and one of the best Scarpias I have heard but for me Raimondi will always be the greatest.
Timbre splendide ! Chapeau bas
Great Singing... weird production and costumes.

Great potential, huge authority. Almost all of it is there , good luck.
Excelente cantante !!!
Grandissimo Erwin...

No Gay here BUT, if this is Scarpia as good looking as he is, Mario should better be an absolute stud. Just saying!
the jawline!

Un Scarpia destacat.
This young singer has a very nice voice, which will probably grow bigger over time. I think he may be a superstar about ten years up the road.

Not sure he's quite there yet for this role. Saw his Faust recently - WOW! "Le Veau d'Or" was maniacal and brilliantly done.
