After viewing/listening to several versions of this scene cast with some of the most admired baritones of our past and present, I must say that Mr. Maestri stands up VERY well! He is suitably menacing, borderline pathological in his view and pursuit of Tosca, and vocalizes the scene with a big, imposing sound! Bravo, sir!

I had not heard Signor Maestri prior to viewing this video and I will restrict my comment to his singing only. This is big-time singing that promises potential greatness. Time will tell. The voice has enough weight that one is tempted to think he is a bass-baritone. It is refreshing to hear a full, robust, even burly baritone sound in this era of lean, bright baritones everywhere!
A vídeo published in 2014 without a single comment? Inconceivable! Mr. Maestro is just amazing and this production superb. What a shame! Thank you for sharing!

Magnificent Scarpia. Perfect powerful baritono drammatico! Why should he sing Dulcamara? Falstaff! Amonasro!
One of the rare singers who is not a star merely because of the woeful state of opera talent nowadays. His voice and singing would make him a major singer in almost any generation. Other than a disappointingly dull version of Iago's Credo that I saw on UA-cam, almost everything I've heard from him is truly first-rate.

I was paying as much attention to Zito's classical set design and costume details, the lighting making everyone look like period paintings. At 03:59 that was pretty interesting, the Roman Republic kids interrupting things with their red pamphlets!

His Falstaff is so definitive and fabulous that one cannot imagine him in anything else. Until one hears his Alfio, his Don Pasquale, his Dulcamara, his Scarpia. What a phenomenal baritone!! God bless Ambrogio Maestri!!!
