O budismo theravada segue os mesmos princípios estabelecidos pelo Buda, escritos em pali. A linha zen e outras adaptaram algumas regras devido a cultura local, etc
For one, monks and nuns were originally wandering ascetics. They would stay in monasteries for a period a three months during the rains retreat, and then they would be obligated to leave. It's difficult to grow food when you wander around. In addition, monks and nuns must not cut themselves off from the lay community. They must interact. Monks and nuns give blessings and teachings and they receive support in the aspect of food, medicine, etc. It is likely that the Buddha gave the vow not to cut off grass, not to grow vegetables, etc. so that monks and nuns would not become independent form the lay community. Here's why. But in China, although monks and nuns were exempt from taxes and State labor, the lay community was not as supportive as it had been in India. Of course, big donators (sometimes kings and other officials at the court) at times supported the community (and sometimes persecuted it). But monks and nuns had to become more self-sufficient, and so they started to grow food. The "hermit" tradition took root in China, while monks were initially "wandering ascetics."
