Just get a super chill cat and experiment on them seeing what strokes make them purr the loudest! I have 3 and a foster and the boys mainly prefer chin tickles and the girls prefer around the ears. One of mine is part feral (I socialised her when she was 12 weeks) and she will get nervous if she can't see your hand coming at her but with me she will let me cuddle and kiss her as long as I'm not trapping her. My other half had never had a pet before meeting me so to teach him how to hold and pet cats as well as their likes and dislikes I used my most relaxed cat Sebastian as he's so patient when it comes to being picked up or fussed over, I think when it comes to every rescuer it's really handy to have that one non reactive animal that will put up with anything so that people can learn how to properly care for them 😊

I've socialized dozens of fully grown feral cats. The key is patience and persistence, slowly "intruding" on their space while feeding in the wild. Sometimes the nastiest old toms make the loveliest cuddle buddies - hard to believe until you see it.

I've been feeding a full grown stray cat (I think someone abandoned her) for about two months and I let her stay in the house at night, where she'll sleep in my reclining chair . She has a kitten with her that's rather large , and he's really spooky. I think he's about three months old or more. He runs away evertime someone stands up. I've gotten him to eat inside the house and he'll sleep on my bed facing outside when the doors open. If you close the door hell lose his shit. He doesn't hiss though and never claws . I've touched him a couple times while he was eating and he will usually okay but will stop eating sometimes. The door has to be open though and I'm in Florida , so mosquitoes are coming in. I want to find out a way to get him cool with being in the house with no way outside.

I left the room to get food and water for the poor critter and I was back in10 min.
When I got back Ester, the name for the kitten, was rubbing all over my wife, Ester just wanted to be scratched and rubbed. She started purring like crazy.

I grew up on a farm away from the city and would get strays and feral cats and kittens just show up. Some people dumped their cats or they just wandered in. I would sit in our shed that the cats would get their food and water, and they had an opening to come and go. But I was able to get all the feral cats tamed, it just took patience and presence and they learned trust. It was very rewarding since we needed the cats for the mice issues and they needed us so they could have a life.

A few years ago my roommate brought home about a 9 week old kitten that had been separated from his mother living in the wild. He was hissing spitfire starving, crying when he ate and it took me about a week to socialize him to me. Unfortunately he was fear driven and only learned to trust me. I moved away and about a year and a half later my roommate had to move and couldn't take the cat. The cat was unadoptable because no one would want a cat that is constantly afraid and couldn't get near. So I took him, In a short time he remembered me and comes out from under the bed to socialize with me, he is really a sweet guy, loves to play with the catnip toy and gives me his belly to rub, but even the slightest noise outside or someone in the hallway and he flies under the bed to hide. His world is... Lions, Tigers and Bears... Oh My!!! fear driven and that is the way he will be for the rest of his life. At least he allows me to give him love and companionship and he deserves to be content.

@@_wheat856 Yes he definitely was feral and “feeder friendly” as a little tiny kitten he was all skin and bones with a ton of fur (Hence named "Fluffy") and would cry as I fed him roast beef. He probably only had a few days to live when my roommate rescued him.
Yesterday I turned around in my chair and there he was on my bed laying on his back with his back legs stretched apart. (He is very comfortable in that position.) I talked to him as I got up and came over to him and started to rub his belly, he did not flinch and stayed as if he were asleep, then after a few seconds he twisted his shoulders to allow me to get to his chest between his front legs as well. [The full monty rub.]
Considering his nature to be scared, it is so rewarding and endearing that he gives me his trust.

Fleeroy is doing great, he adores scratches and rubs and a wee bit o' the nip. Just last night he jumped up into my lap for the first time! Poor Lynyrd though, it has been progress by millimeters. But, lunchmeat has been a godsend. He'll do a contract killing for Cajun style Turkey breast and we won't talk about what he would do for roasty toasty beef! BTW, did I mention that I basically started work on them at 7 months? Yup. 7 months. I'm patient as a glacier. They're now a bit over a year old. Never give up, never surrender.

It's worth persevering. I fostered two hissy spitty feral kittens aged about 3 months. I'd just sit nearby them and pretend to ignore them. Slowly, very slowly they'd allow me to stroke them until one day the tom sat on my lap followed by his sister a couple of days later. It took 3 years and is the best thing I've ever done. Keep up the good work.

  • @enviedcookie5773

I have 2 “feral” cats (sisters) that I got from a shelter. The lady who had them gave them up after a year because they hadn’t “turned.” It’s been a long road (about 8months so far) and we are finally able to slightly pet them although they’re still quite cautious of us. But they do come when I call them for food. And they’re vocal. I was told a *truly* feral cat doesn’t meow, but not sure if thats true.
Just wish I had gotten them earlier, I feel like it would have made a big difference instead of a year and a half old each.
I also feed two completely feral cats in my backyard. Someone already caught and released them cause their ears are snipped. So I just feed them. Don’t exactly know what I’m doing-not a professional cat person but I know every little bit helps.

    • @FlatbushCats
      @FlatbushCats  5 років тому +56

They may eventually trust you a bit more and get more comfortable with you only, but will likely always be skittish. So we need to make peace with the way they are now, and make sure they're comfortable indoors (a true feral cat would be very stressed in that situation and should not be kept indoors). Feeding eartipped feral cats outside is a great thing to do. You can get TNR certified to help fix any new cats that might show up down the road.

She will come up to you if you are sitting or laying down and let you pet her, but one slight move and she will bolt. She sleeps on their bed, but is fickle about letting you touch her. She is a sweet and well behaved cat, she's just not much for attention.

As to touching them that is only a little bit and if you approach them with love. I have found that they are both food orientated and will let you touch if they are going to have treats. They kept hiding and running away even when I tried to bring them food. After a week of this I was afraid they would starve to death so I left food out and they would only eat at 3am when I was asleep, after 3 weeks of this they both ran out the door when I opened it for my roommate, ran off into the woods never to be seen again, I was very sad not understanding that I was fighting a losing battle.

I live in France, where i moved from London 3 years ago. I had my old cat who lived here, who ruled the roost. But in Spring 2018, i saw a small cat sunning "him"self outside, but would run away if it saw me. I think i had seen this as a kitten at the bottom of my garden, and some long distance photos i had taken earlier confirmed this.
So i put some food out for it (reckoning this cat was at most 6 months old) probably a bit younger.
Of course it was nervous and would run and hide if it saw me, but came back when i hid myself, to eat. Gradually over a few weeks it got less shy, and eventually would let me touch it whilst it was eating. Then it would disappear. It was around now that i realised that Henry (OK, Henri... French!) was getting rather bigger than just food intake would account for, and realised it was Henrietta, and pregnant.
Henrietta then promptly vanished from my garden for a while...I had no idea where she actually lived, as this is fairly rural France and there is a lot of open land around me. But, to cut a longish story short she then turned up in my garden with 3 kittens in tow. I soon found out they were actually living in the roof space of my little apartment at the end of my house.
So i continued to feed her, and eventually, the kittens too, as she was getting skinnier and skinnier keeping up with the demands of her kittens.
By now they would rush up to me when i fed them all in the garden, but, still outside as my old cat would hiss and spit at them if she saw them.
Sadly, Molly, my old cat died a year ago (kidney failure), so i sort of opened my doors... and after having Henrietta spayed, i managed to get the three kittens neutered as well.
I now have three fully grown kittens (!) who live with me... Bandit (boy), Lilly (boy!) and Smokey (girl) all three who are currently lying around, one in my lap(Lilly), one in front of my computer(Smokey , and Bandi,t off up to no good, as per usual.
The upshot is that with time and care, even wild cats can become socialised.
Henrietta (the mother) doesn't live here, so much, but visits most days, and will often sleep in the house sometimes for days on end, and then disappear of for a while.

The lady at the ASPCA told me she wouldn't make a good pet because of how unsocial she was. I picked her up and held her and there was just a look in her eyes, so I brought her home. Took her to my room with food, water and litter to get her acclimated, she immediately ran under my bed for ten minutes. I coaxed her out with treats and sat down on my bed, put her away from me with some treats and I laid down and just let her get used to my presence. She fell asleep against my foot, then woke up and slept on my thigh, then crawled up on my chest and let me pet her. She's been my little cuddle bug ever since.

Fourth: Vivisect yourself, place your heart of stone within the chest cavity, reseal it and clear your throat to jumpstart it.
      Fifth: ???
Sixth: You now have a heart of stone.

Fabulous video! You really have your act together taking care of cats. The videography is excellent, too. I think any cat can be socialized with enough patience and time, but kittens are definitely the best candidates. We've tried feeding our cats baby food, but they don't like it.

Our cats' favorite was ham baby food.

If you want a good example of "Any cat can be socialised with enough time", look up TinyKittensHQ and their permanent resident, Grandpa Mason. It has taken him around two years to get to a stage where he's fine with humans being within a couple of metres of him without hissing. Now I think a lot of his progress is because he loves taking care of kittens, but still, two years is a long time to have to dedicate to getting on a cat's good side.
Kittens are a lot quicker to socialise, but if someone has the patience, even old cats can be eventually persuaded that humans are not terrible.

Your videos almost make Brooklyn look nice again but I know I could never tolerate living there again. Great work. My Mom would feed her colony but never went through the effort to spay or neuter them. That just makes for more litters.
