- I build Telecaster style guitar for the great guitar build off 2020 unofficial out of pallet and epoxy resin.
My Website: magicatticguitars.com/

The great guitar build off 2020 unofficial competition is over. If you would like to be up to date on it make sure to follow me on my Instagram: @magicatticguitars.
This is a full guitar build video. I used Fender Telecaster guitar shape for the reference and change the shape a bit, so it is not an exact copy. I used my own headstock design and I think it fits the guitar design well. So I end up with this semi-custom guitar design 😆
This guitar build was a big challenge because I never worked with epoxy resin on this scale. I made a lot of mistakes along the way and I learned how to fix them or avoid them in the future, so I can say it was a very educational build for me. I hope you can also learn something from this video.
I used an old pallet for this guitar and I think the discoloration of the wood made a very cool effect on the guitars body. It was a challenge to prepare and brake all the pieces and make them in to a Stratocaster guitar shape. It took 420 pieces and a lot of time to complete the body.
Epoxy resin I used on this guitar is Dipon De 3D epoxy. It is a deep casting epoxy resin that cures very slowly and because of that it lets all the bubbles out before drying. They claim it is possible to achieve crystal clear bubble free end results without even using vacuum. Obviously I failed in this part. First thing I should do is properly sealing the wood with a coat of epoxy. And the second thing was my poorly made mold as you see in the video. So we will see if this is true in the next guitar build. It also has a good UV resistance and is 100% transparent without yellow tint. Over all I liked to work with this epoxy resin and can already recommend it, so I will put the link below.
I would like to thank Roman Lužar from Teal for giving me some tools and letting me to engrave my logo on the back plate with his laser.
I used the same epoxy resin for finishing the guitars body, and I used Crimson guitars finishing oil for the neck. I put two coats of penetrating guitar oil and 2 coats of high build guitar oil. I really love this product. It gives a nice natural look and feel to the wood. It is much more pleasant on the touch than most finishes and it makes less friction while playing, so I highly recommend using it especially on guitar necks. Find the ling below.
It took three months for the whole guitar build and another three for editing this video. I recorded 300 GB of footage and edited it all by myself. There is another video coming out where I recorded the sound and I will try to make a shorter edit of guitar building and playing. Thanks to my sis Ilona, bro Ezav and friend Simon for helping me to film the sound demo. And thanks to Erik Šnajder for playing the guitar. Check out his youtube channel: / kuractegleda123

What's this?
Pour your epoxy slower from a height, the thin stream removes bubbles alot.
Thank you for the tip. Will take it to my knowledge and use it next time. I very much appreciate it!
cool!
Apart from the brilliant guitar making skills which most people have mentioned, I just wanted to also congratulate you on the shooting and editing of this video. Extremely well done and thank you.
Thank you Tony! Making the video took the same amount of time as building a guitar. Most people don't realise how much work it takes. I'm very happy that you noticed it. And am glad that you enjoyed.
@@MagicAtticGuitars I'm trying to do the same thing with a guitar build and it's so much harder than it looks. Great job!
You mean broken wood and epoxy resin? Or video edit?:)
@@MagicAtticGuitars Video. I'm finding it rather difficult to get good angles and lighting. Broken wood and epoxy looks pretty cool though. Maybe next build:)
@@applebutter4036 man i totally get you. I hope you at least have bigger workshop then mine. Often it is hard to work when you are trying to keep your hands out of viewers angle. For the lights I bought three strong led bulbs and desk light stands so I can move them around as needed. It is important that your main light sources have a consistent colour temperature. Its probably the best if all bulbs are identical. Otherwise it is hard to adjust white balance.
ABSOLUTE ART...FROM SIMPLICITY...
THAT'S ELEGANCE!
YOU'RE NOT JUST A LUTHIER...
YOU'RE AN ARTIST!
Thanks Jack!
I’ll say this to all those out there that buy a body and a neck and all the hardware and call themselves builders, you are assemblers. This man and many more I know personally that make their bodies and necks are builders. Don’t give up though assemblers, and be proud of the work you put in, start building if you’ve always wanted to. There’s never enough guitars in the world.
Well building the Neck of the guitar is generally the hardest part of building a guitar in my opinion because of a fully functional guitar especially Electric requiring a truss rod
@@ooferrell even harder would be doing your own tuner
@@tomdone8575 i mean, there's only so much you can actually build from scratch being just a guitar woodworker
Truss rods, tuners and wires are just different thing compared to usual guitar
I truly had no idea how much work went into custom guitars like this. Absolutely mindblowing work!
I will never bitch about the cost of guitars again. That is a lot of work. Nice job!
Thanks Victor! A lot of people don't realise how much work is involved in building a custom guitar. And there were more that I didn't film. Like making templates and stuff. And days of sanding. I'm happy you noticed the effort I put into it.
Dude you you don’t even know... take a look at this video which has 23 or 24 parts of the entire process of a hand built guitar from beginning to end...

Well said, ha. We are spoiled. Nice to see cool craftsman like this man at work, no doubt.
@@teddysurf yeah. Nice video. He showed it well. Thanks for sharing.
@@nealixd.3011 thanks man!
If this doesn’t make electric guitar tone wood snobs stop and think, nothing will. Great job
Nice one, man! 😀 Thanks!
Can only use real mahogany that’s banned due to regulations and such bruh get on the elitist level.
Doesnt this juat prove that pickups are lime 98% of the sound?
@@nhayes927 yep. Pickups, amp, speakers
@@lomoholga yes and also other electronic components like pots and capacitors. And strings of course.
Thank you for sharing. This is fascinating and this is a true build from scratch. I love watching crafts people sharing their art.
Wow!! Your a true craftsman. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you work. The guitar looks and sounds great, it’s a thing of beauty. Thank you for sharing.
In french we say "once line is crossed, there are no limits left". What a great idea and wonderful job for an amazing result! Bravo.
Thats a very nice saying! Thanks Renuad!😀
I’m so jealous of ppl that have the knowledge, tools and patience to make things like this. Some ppl might view this as work but this looks so fun plus u get a guitar to play when ur done
It sure is fun:) thanks for the comment🙂
It's only work if you don't enjoy it.
That's true 😁
You can just try for yourself. You dont need much tools to build a guitar. Atleast not the body.
@@TheFrontyer thats true. For the body you only need a router and some hand tools.
The brocken wood pieces on the body !!! Excellent idea !!!
That's a thing of beauty! Makes me wish I had kept playing. Great job!
Wow this guy put a ton of work into this. I'm really impressed!
Thanks 😊
I'm a skilled craftsman and I can say great job!everything is trial and error when you're just getting started but patience and the right tools make all the difference.
Thanks Steve. That's really nice to hear from a craftsmen. I totally agree with you.
Amazing work! Enjoyed every minute of watching this. Superb skills! A real artist at what you do!
Incredible work, the measure of a true Craftsman...
Love the details and I'm so blow away by your creativity, please make more guitars because in a world of some many look alikes the stand out ones always scream out the change we need...🤘
Thanks Miguel! I'm already working on my next video. Stay tuned 🤘
This just gave me some great inspiration on a build I've been planning for two years. Many great tips here. I've watched a lot of guitar build videos and this is the best ever.
Wow what a compliment... I never thought I would hear something like this. I'm flattered! It makes me very happy if I can inspire people. And it is very nice to hear that you learned something from my video. Thank you very much Darin! I would love to see your guitar! Please send me a photo on IG when you finish. Take care my friend!
One of the most beautiful guitars I've seen
Thanks Steve! That's nice to hear.
Omg.... Incredible! A work of art.
No wonder " custom made " is more expensive than " mass produced ". Great craftsmanship dude.
Thanks dude!
Wow, excellent work! That's one unique awesome looking guitar!
Use a propane blowtorch instead of a heat gun to remove the bubbles next time; it removes way more bubbles and does a much faster job of it!
Also, painting a layer of epoxy onto the surface with a paintbrush, especially the broken wood surface, being sure to stab the brush into all the nooks and crannies, saturating every inch of exposed wood before pouring the epoxy is another very effective way of preventing any bubbles or air pockets from forming on the surface of the wood (bottom of the epoxy) When epoxy is poured straight on to a dry surface, rough/porous surfaces are an air pocket's best friend and they stand out so much in an end product, especially when the epoxy is clear!
Thanks for the tips Steve!
Whoa!!! Awesome work and great result. 👏👏 This brings back memories of my own bass guitar build. And the best thing about it - it's still my main instrument.
Thanks man. I also still have my first guitar. I would never gave up that one:)
It takes a real craftsman to show fixing there mistakes in the process. I appreciate u for that it shows others how to maintain skills.
It's insane the amount of work that goes into making a quality guitar. I really wish I had the tools and no how to do this kind of thing. I think it's the coolest shit ever
Love it all! The concept, the execution, the attention to detail... Really love the side stripes instead of those "standard" dots, the fretwork (filling the tang ends). Even love the video editing :)
You got my vote!
Thanks Eric! This is very nice to hear 😊 I'm happy that you noticed all the details.
The best one so far (guitar and a video :D)! The whole process is insanely well-thought-of and the amount of hours put into it is ridiculous... Hats off bro ❤️
Thanks bro! I'm flattered to hear that!
14:04 painters tape on the bottom side of the spanner ... brilliant! You learn something new every day!
The bubbles actually look pretty rad, looks like sawdust ... what Bob Ross would call a Happy Mistake!
Building that guitar was no small undertaking. Fantastic work. Tons of patience. God bless you.
Thanks Dave!
Nice job. I’m a warehouse manager and wooden pallets are my daily companions. Having said that, I cannot do what you did. Great idea.
Thanks 🙂
Amazing work! 🔥 You inspire me in many ways ❤️ Much love
Finally... I was waiting for your comment for so long😆 thank you sis❤ I can say the same to you!
Wow! makes me appreciate all the work that goes into a hand made instrument. It's Brilliant and also Video skill echo Tony
What an amazing Artwork !! I really love this guitar !!
I cant even imagine how much time and effort was put into the building of this guitar and in the meanwhile you even tought about how to film these shots so the video will be interesting to watch. And in the end even the edit is made so that everything matches the music. I cant comprehand how everything can be done by just one person... You really are an amazing artist and you have my respect! 👏👏👏 keep 'em coming!
I believe you know exactly how much time and effort went to this project as you stood by my side the whole time. Thank you for that. And for believing in me. An you know that I will keep 'em coming.

The time, talent, effort, patience to build this. It's incredible!! ❤️🔥
Thank you very much 😊
"it's my first epoxy project..."
What you'll learn over the next few months and years (presumed you keep that guitar that long) is that cured epoxy resin shrinks over a long period of time. Ask me how I know that...
However, that was amazing to watch. I especially like the process of building that neck - very well done!
I wanna know how you know that! 😀 No seriously, tell me more please! How much does it shrink?
What nice tools ! Having a good shop is so important
Awesome craftsmanship, it's beautiful!

I have seen quite a few different people making 🎸 🎸 but yours is awesome. Your video and music is also great and a huge awesome to Erik great music, I will definitely be looking forward to seeing more of your future guitars.
Thank you Jill. I am very happy that you like it 🙂
Truly incredible all the way around!
This was a fantastic video. I love your build nice job. I hope mine turns out half as nice.
Thanks man. I put a lot of work on both, guitar build and video edit. But I really like doing this so it was much fun. I wish you best luck with your project. I'm sure it will turn out nice.
I woulda just bought a neck and headstock online. The fact that you made that instead just the body and ordering one online is impressive. Good job man. Turned out awesome.
Thanks Michael! That's nice to hear.
FYI Michael - The guitar in this video has a 25" scale. A normal Fender style neck you could buy wouldn't work (25.5" scale). Anyway, the guy obviously already has the tools and woodworking experience so its a LOT cheaper to make a neck yourself.
@@CraigHagerman that's true. If you are building your own neck you have more freedom on the features and design. My neck has also 12Inch radius and very different headstock than original telecaster.
And it is cheaper if you don't count all of the hours of work:) thanks for your comment!
@@MagicAtticGuitars Cheaper if you have all the correct tools.. clamps, glues, etc.. I would Love to build my own guitar from scratch IF I had the tools. And the knowledge. The knowledge is out there. Money isn't..lol
I will be 100% honest, because that's who I am. That is one fucking impressive piece of WORK! AS A TEENAGER I TOOK ON THE CONCEPT OF BUILDING A FLYING THREE.. it took me several trips to the mill shop to get it right. And I lost it because the family had to move.
I hacked an old fender mustang neck onto it. Simply because I was young and poor, we're talking I'm like 16 17 years old, but wow this is like what they call a fruit cake of guitars. I can understand how your problems drooling through it and boring the different cavities out, because the different woods will react in different ways and different directions of the word would move your bit in different ways. I get that. But overall I'm actually very impressed!
Thanks for sharing the story Scott. And for being honest:) I'm happy that you like it.
That is a beautiful build and it sounds incredible!!! I Love it. Fantastic job.
Thanks Darcel!
That's one bad-ass guitar! 🙌🏼🔥
I'm glad you like it. Thanks Tim!
If you plan to do another project like this in the future, I might save some time by gluing the wood with a shallow pour of epoxy instead of the glue by hand you did early on the video. Nevertheles, greatproject and awesome job. The guitar looked great
Thanks Luis! I was thinkink of this way, but than there is no way to clamp the pieces together. They wont stand tight together if you dont force them :)
What have I just witnessed... Incredible work!
Artistic genius... and I think your work bench for table saw is bad ass as well. Your extremely gifted my friend. Peace
What a true work of art my friend. that and a gift from God.

Awesome job, I built mine for my 40th birthday 14 years ago and my divorce depression.. I made a small mistake too on my bridge, not too bad though.
I know all the hard work, hours & effort that you put into it & very cool guitar way to go 👍👍
Having a guitar where you cut the holes and do every piece yourself is the way to go because you truly have a custom piece.

Read everything you can find about the famous brands and gain knowlege then just do it. I built my first wood guitar out of scrap maple and walnut i found in a dumpster. Save yourself some big problems by building a neck through, then you dont have to hassle with the neck body joint. Cool!
