I remember when dodie made a video where she talked about how she had been going through old pictures and home videos and I knew as soon as I saw the When lyric video that's what she had been looking at them for and it made my heart hurt so much. The whole visual album really hit close to home for me and I'm still watching and listening to it constantly. Well done to all involved!
I think part of why the "Before the Line" video works is BECAUSE of the improvised nature of it, really. Like, it's such an emotionally chaotic song, with so much anger and sadness and desperation, and that means that the much rougher feel to the video adds a huge amount to the song.
i love how much you did manually like ciaran physically holding the camera to the side of the car and sophie holding the projector for the montage and you changing the lights on an app. those things are still technical but just feel more personal and intimate? because they were done live and not in the edit. congrats, it’s such a gorgeous piece of work.
Such interesting stuff!!! That red light moment was so satisfying, and to hear that it was an accident.. the frenzied energy of Before the Line really works, I think it's my favorite of all the videos for that reason alone
the stuff about the car being a journey makes so much more sense now because I saw the arc as someone going from being in the backseat to be in control/driver's seat and the helplessness that comes with the stuff the songs talks about... and so I was confused that she left the car in the last one cause i thought, but you're finally in control why would you leave... loved the vids, loved the music (goes without saying but gonna say it anyway)
Your comment about the intent of Dodie walking right-to-left vs. left-to-right in "?" immediately took me back to my days studying Herbert Zettl's theories of right screen dominance and up/down diagonals, so bravo.
I cannot explain how much I loved the visual album - it complemented the beautiful, complex, heartwrenching music so well and you did a BRILLIANT job. Thank you!
What an absolute privilege to direct these videos. And what a good job you did!! As much as love the songs, I really love the videos. Dodie is so talanted, and it goes for her songwriting as well for her actingperformance. What a girl!!! Such a joy whatching this behind the scene video :)
This was such a fascinating video! Thanks Jack for all of these insights. I love the album and thought the visual album perfectly conveyed the songs whilst also adding something additionally special to them too. Really great to learn more about it.
Such a beautiful and compelling way of tying together all these wonderful and heart wrenching songs. I want to make detailed lists and spread sheets of all the details and how they connect to each other now
The album is really lovely! Some great tracks and I can't wait too see her live in glasgow! The lyric videos are also awesome they really suite her music.
Instead of saying 'get the hell out of my room' you could've said 'I'm cutting you off, go on, out ya get' cuz like... you're a bar 🙃 Also as someone who has studied film and whose hobby is music, this video was super interesting. Love the album, love the visuals, 10/10.
So interesting! Really loved hearing all this bts stuff. I've been meaning to make a video essay on interdisciplinary arts and this visual album is for sure going in it once i do, such a cool concept!!
I loved sorry. The video and the music were just so beautiful. I have to say tho, I didn't even realize there was blood on her hands, I was just confused about that dark stuff and wether it's makeup or something... Seems really obvious now
Hey Jack. Have u heard about P.E.M acting technique? its like a way to reach emotion without having someone have to feel the emotion in a sense. It brings the emotion into the physical. Maybe something to look into, for directing. I'm studying film myself, and yeah find the whole bringing people into emotions quite iffy at times.
I loved getting to hear about the creative process! Thanks for going through it for us! Big old long time listener / watcher of you both, this shit is some of the best stuff you guys have made. It was cool to see how you personal connection with each other informed the way things were made,
"I don't have the right answer just because I made them". I am such a nut job trying to get the 'true' meaning behind things and music and movies. I need to know what the artist intended, so that I feel I understand what they're putting out there, and whether I resonste with that or not. The need to know is kinda limiting, to be honest, and it annoys me, but that's how my brain works. But this, do you truly believe that? That there's no wrong answer? When I heard that I could take a breath of air, like "oh, ok then", like finally willing to relax a bit, maybe.
I wasn't sure if Sorry was about a murder or finding someone after su**ide. With Before the Line, I thought it was about her feeling su***dal after seeing whatever she saw.
with capital T capital S he means that "The Situation" is like written with capital letters. With the situation he means the pandemic/covid. The capital letters are like meant to mean not just a situation but The Situation that everybody knows and is the main thing that is happening. it's like how you would write The One when talking about the love of your life. I hope that explenation is kinda clear.
@@JackHoward omg thank you I’ve always wondered, never heard that being done before being from Australia! We’re a bit behind lol. It always made sense in context and I got that you were referencing Covid, but it makes so much more sense now. Thanks for replying and for helping a nuffy out 🤘
Late comment but it took me a few watches to finally notice that because it’s a British car, it’s BACKWARDS to what I’m used to a car layout being (North American) and that was disorienting
I can’t even remember the initial idea for before the line lol
And thank u jack ily 😭 we crafted these and I’m so proud of us all WA
It was a pleasure x
LOVE YOU BOTH 💛💛
The "have you seen Tenet" joke is becoming my personal favorite joke of all time. It's a problem.
have you seen it thoXD

it's definitely the hair, so swoopy
Beautifully shot album, Jack! Dodie's lyrical mastery and your vision for the scenes were truly a perfect marriage.

Laughed a bit too hard at the cow sounds effects. 🐮
Great video. Excellent bar

That’s not a coincidence :)

i agree, dodie is REALLY good at expressing emotions
Dodie: I'm in me mum's car, vroom vroom

Okay someone’s gotta tell me what “capital T caspital S” means. You, Hazel etc. all say it and I have no idea what it means
It's "The Situation"... Not "the situation". The Situation. Y'know?

i adopted this from hazel. hope she doesn't mind haha.
I think it's a UK thing. Cause after moving to the US, I noticed nobody emphasizes words that way
