That example about Marlin in Finding Nemo is absolutely perfect and gave me immediate inspiration to make one of my own characters much more compelling. Thank you!
I really like the advice that flips the "write what you know" thing to become "know what you write" -- like, write whatever you want, but research it so you're not writing it clumsily without being informed
i’m in film school, and i’ve taken real courses on screenwriting, but this video pretty much sums it up. so why am i at university when i have jack howard?
Jack just explained what took my english teacher 3 months to teach. What's better is that he used shrek as THE ONLY example for all of these tips. I watched shrek 3 times in those months.
oh my god YES, *PLEASE* talk about little miss sunshine. it's probably my favorite film, i love it so much. also this video was so lovely!! thank you so much for making it! you did a great job condensing big ideas into simple points that make intuitive sense.
very helpful! i do developmental book editing and honestly this can totally apply to prose as well - especially what you say about protagonists and “writing what you know.”
"Are you torturing your characters enough? Be mean to them" is quite literally the best writing tip when it comes to creating characters that make sense and connect with the audience/reader
I finished my Masters in Creative Writing and I just love watching Jack’s videos on writing. These videos feel like discussions but I never have to say anything, I just find myself nodding.
Love scriptwriting (apart from the technicalities of layout and all the rest of its so complicated help) and this has given me quite a few cool ideas of how I could develop some of my characters and stories, thanks Jack!
Not a filmmaker or writer or anything like that, but movies and stories like Finding Nemo are why I easily gravitate towards animated films and TV shows just as much as live-action, and why I don't understand people that go "but it's a caRTOOON SO IT'S FOR KIDS?!??!" Like just because the target audience for a piece of media is younger doesn't mean the content is not good. Great video Jack, hope you're staying well x
Thank you Jack! I just started a playwriting class and am nervous and excited for it. Excited to create, but nervous because I've not written many stories before let alone plays! I think all these tips can be applied to all writing! I will defiantly be coming back to remind myself of these tips! What you said made a lot of sense. I just need to go practice now!
Absolutely amazing and so informative, I'm just a Yr 10 GCSE student and I found this to be so helpful with my English literature, thank you and keep up the good work Jack.
ooh this got me inspired to write and brainstorm new ideas!! have loved following along on your writing/directing/filmmaking journey jack - i’ve got a lot of similar interests plus i just think you’re a funny dude haha. so thanks for letting us!
I'm in the middle of editing the book I'm trying to write, and I definitely had to rework the plot after the first draft because of the lack of conflict past a certain point. I'm going to apply your advice to my work so I can try and make it the best it can be!
I'm don't usually comment on videos, but O M G this video is going in my favorites. It sums up everything so well and Jack's videos, in general, have helped me open my eyes to taking in films differently. (in a good way) I would LOVE to see a video analysis on Little Miss Sunshine
great video! a lot of the points you touched upon in in the book Invisible Ink. one of my absolute favourite books on writing if anyones looking for recs!
i love these informative videos! I'm an aspiring writer, however i like to focus on novels as well as screenwriting, i think that the film vision when writing something that isnt in film is really interesting too, so all of this I'd like to apply to that. In a way when writing I know it's very unlikely for a movie to be adapted from it, so I write in a novel format. Just something interesting I thought on this :)
You know, I’ve actually been writing (or slowly trying to write) a tv script and this came at a weirdly perfect time to give me the push I needed today. Also, that’s a great shirt. Looks great.
I'd add "try to give your characters the best introduction possible, so that they stick in the mind of the audience." Give your audience an image that not only tells them who the character is, but one that also makes them memorable. Again, the Joker in Dark Knight is a brilliant example, but the one I will always point to is Miss Havisham in Great Expectations... Pip enters her crumbling old mansion and in one of the rooms, which is dark and full of stale old wedding cake, he finds this crazy looking old lady in a rotten wedding dress. It says it all about her.
Great video! Might you be able to do a video explaining the practical, formatting side of script writing? Things like the layout with dialogue versus description, sluglines, scene changes/length, how to make dialogue realistic and how to make characters come to life? Really interested in your writing process!😊
Only took 7 minutes and 27 seconds to single handedly save what I thought was the end to my interest in film. I literally just wrote a short film idea after watching this and now I'm excited to make films again wtf Jack
Before this, I got an ad for Spike Lee's masterclass. Between that an this video, it has really inspired me. Makes me remember my acting classes and things I had forgot about.
this would be quite a shallow comment under such a nice and informative video, but SOZ MATES this confession needs to be made! when my friends recently discussed which youtuber is "the hottest" I immediately thought about Jack. None of my friends knew him and none of them got this "he is soooo smart in such a nice way" explanation. But now I'm just reminded why I stand by this opinion. apologies if this is kinda innapropriate but his mind makes him REALLY ATTRACTIVE (I could potentially write an essay on why exactly it is so, but not having english as my native language limits me, so here is just this short statement lol). And the haircut in this video is great too. have a nice day.
I have to know how much thought was put into that button being undone on his shirt. I can just imagine jack being like "is that too sexy? no no own it"
So, are you telling me that life is mean to me because I’m the perfect protagonist of my own story? Wow
Great advice mate.
Cheers Jack x
Jack and other Jack. Ha.
That example about Marlin in Finding Nemo is absolutely perfect and gave me immediate inspiration to make one of my own characters much more compelling. Thank you!

I am not a writer but of course I shall still watch this video, because jack

I honestly think all the years you've spent creating amazing content ABSOLUTELY gives you the right to give writing advice 😂😂
Cheers Elizabeth :)
Love scriptwriting (apart from the technicalities of layout and all the rest of its so complicated help) and this has given me quite a few cool ideas of how I could develop some of my characters and stories, thanks Jack!
Great tips, Jack! Still keen/excited for/waiting for your little miss sunshine video - love that filmmmmm
