I’ve been fishing since I was 5 and I’m 71 now and that tip with the foam is just brilliant! I already knew about spooling the line, label upwards, in a bucket of warm water but the foam tip is different class! I’ve just spooled a Shimano Aerlex 10000 using it and it was a piece of cake!

Thanks Gerry. I used your technique with a Shimano Technium mono line and it just worked perfectly, despite the fact that the spool jumped up and down in the water bucket. The line simply lined itself beautifully on my MGS 10000 XSB. I used to have someone hold the spool but now I don't need to bother anyone with this. Great job!

One technical thing I would like to address - thank you for allowing time for your camera to focus on the close-up of your reel. (I watched a video this morning, with a close-up of the reel that was not in focus. Not helpful.) Well done!

Great video I always put my spodding glove on when I spool up new line and pinch the line between thumb and finger, I also soak the line for a good hour before spooling works for me

so after you have wound the line on the spool, and close up the bell, does the string automatically go to the correct side of the bell where the bushing looking thing is or do you have to put it there personally?

excellent advice, something so simple but so easy to get wrong!
would be interested to know though, does the foam cause friction which heats the line up? or does the line being in the bucket of water stop it heating up?

water does keep the line from overheating

what a faff if you spooled it under proper tension first time not with a piece of foam you would not have to go a field and respool under more tension . Couple of casts and the reel is good to go , if a jobs worth doing and all that

Underwater Scotland you don't need to. Braided line doesn't have memory. But if you think you have to there is no problem with it.

If u do decide to soak your braid before loading your spool don't put it under too much tensions because the braid will squeeze crazy tight on your spool and could explode it potentially
