This is the second time I'm watching this interview; the first time was on FB as I am in contact with Bishop Ashenden in that manner. I was so moved by this interview - two mental giants, two good hearts, two good men with genuine concerns for where we are and where we are going in regard to our freedoms. Love Mr. Anderson and truly, deeply respect him. Love Bishop Ashenden and truly, deeply respect him.

JOHN: I always like listening to Gavin Ashenden (try Anglican Unscripted!), because he is a person of genuine faith, in my discernment. He always comes unstuck on homosexuality: but, then, he is a churchman; and they always opt for Paul and religious fundamentalism on that point, rather than the words of Jesus, as we have received them. But on modern secularism, ISLAM, and hatred of Christianity by the 'woke' classes, he is absolutely spot on. Where is wrong is in his assumption that ALL gay men think the same. Now 67, I have shared 36 years with my partner (73), and neither of us even wants a 'civil partnership', let alone a 'gay wedding'. As a Christian, I consider that 'marriage' pertains to heterosexual CHRISTIAN relationships (not to non-Christian ones!); and, as an older gay activist, I have learned to despise politicians so much, that I don't want any of the crumbs they allow to fall from their table. I recall when they codified my relationships, as a younger male: told me when, where, and with whom I might enjoy my body. So, no Gavin; many gay men do NOT want anything which remotely resembles a heterosexual legal arrangement!

Spot on, as always - anyone speaking up on social media is 'targeted' and their life is made difficult: it has happened to me. When my husband was recently stopped by an unmarked police car, sirens flashing, it was to state he had not paid our road tax, when we pay by monthly direct debit - this was not the first time an unmarked police car had stopped the same car, so my husband looked over the policeman's shoulder to see our number plate in his book: clearly he was to stop our car on any pretext and try and catch my husband out for something else. Given we are conserving petrol to save money, he was driving properly, and at the correct speed, we don't drink and we've maintained our car, so they had no reason to keep him, but last time he was kept half an hour in the police car being grilled over 'jumping a red light', when he had not done that, and they made me stay in the car on the hard shoulder of a busy road which was very dangerous, whilst they grilled him. The same has happened to me at various times - one has to be quick witted or have a dash cam: fortunately, I have had witnesses in the car; one is hardly safe at home either, because I have had gas lighting from neighbours, too, connected to the council. I see any sort of bullying as unacceptable and I have challenged everything and so far won: all lessons I have learned and passed on to my daughters - we live in difficult times, but there is nothing new under the sun: I am no doubting Thomas: the writing is on the wall

This stimulating interview put me in mind of a little known story from the Bible, from the first book of Kings, ch. 22. King Ahab is discussing with his ally, King Jehoshaphat, whether they might attack neighbouring Syria. Jehoshaphat, by far the more prudent one, advises that they first seek the advice of the in-house prophets to be sure the Lord will approve. The prophets then tell the king exactly what he wants to hear, and Jehoshaphat doesn't believe a word of it. Isn't there someone else they can ask? Indeed there is one prophet called Micaiah, whom Ahab doesn't like at all because he "never prophesies good for me, but evil"! However Micaiah is brought it, and unfortunately tells the king that to go into battle will be the end of him. For that he is thrown into jail. So the battle was fought, and one soldier, "drawing his bow at a venture" hit the king, and he bled to death in his chariot.
In the interview Dr Ashenden refers to Archbishop Welby. He is a man of the church, but he is also archbishop by political appointment. Like the 400 professional prophets of King Ahab, he will not rock the boat. The Christian faith is all very well, but he dare not be politically incorrect. Dr Ashenden is the modern Micaiah. He once had a privileged position as a Queen's chaplain but withdrew from it to speak as his conscience required him to. Like Micaiah, he may offend, and by running foul of hate speech legislation end up on the wrong side of the law. And like Micaiah, he will speak out and what he says will turn out to be true.

As a “conservative” Christian, I endorse virtually everything said in this video. But I cannot for the life of me understand the unrestrained enthusiasm for JP. Can you please listen to yourselves from 35:00 to 40:00. JP came to prominence via a popular attack on an extreme manifestation of the left. We were there-by primed to think that he must be on our side. But instead of continuing his attack against the Marxist left, he launched a self righteous “vicious and hateful” counter attack on the fearful/evil fascist “extreme right”. Anyone then who is to the right of the left is now in danger of being banded extreme right wing by JP, there-by incurring his wrath. This exactly constitutes the type of “ambush” so appropriately identified by Gavin. JP is not a Christian by any traditional definition. He is no ways a conservative, but firmly to the left. (Please forgive my “hate speech”)

The problem in differentiating between 'real' Christianity and 'corrupt' Christianity, is that this is exactly the same game that the Communists play, and our Political Class plays, when it comes to ISLAM. Terrorism isn't 'real' Islam: but 'corrupt' Islam. The deaths ordered by Stalin were not 'real' Marxism; but 'corrupt' Marxism. The sanctions against Homosexuals (imposed by all three of these belief-systems) are not 'real', but 'corrupt'! I beg to differ!

  • @radhikajog5102
    @radhikajog5102 Рік тому

Commenting as I go along. At about 9:17, he is making the same arguments for Christianity that the Cultural Marxists make for Marxism.
In my honest opinion Marxism, Islam, Christianity, Atheism etc are all part of the same same larger school of thought.
"We know the right way. Your way is wrong." --> So far OK.
"You must change your ways. And I will use force to make you change your ways". --> PROBLEMATIC.
Also Judeo-Christian is a problematic phrase IMO. With respect to Middle eastern monotheism (which is essentially "only my god is right " theism) Judaism and Christianity differ big time especially with regards to proselytism.

I agree with mr. Gavin on many of his views except i strongly believe religion favors corruption by letting those so incline to assume power on behalf of whatever deity they worship. Even those honest in their belief will tend to impose their view on others by direct or indirect coercion, not to mention those purposefully looking for that sort of power over others.
It's not for nothing we call social justice a religion.

    • @sjgar3

Not that there aren't some valid examples, but from experience within I would say that that is a bit of a caricature of Christianity. We recognise power within the structures, especially the power of influence, but that is true within all institutions, relationships and positions of power and needs to be compared alongside. But it is not the power that is wrong, rather it is how it used. Without any power, no one can do anything, bad or good.

I knew Gavin back in the 1980s. He was never an advocate of the gay community but homophobic even then (I state this from direct, personal experience with him). What he has always enjoyed is being the centre of attention and he finds it easiest to achieve it by always opting for being controversial, so that he can stand out. Society has moved on and many strive for an openness to accept the right of others to live their own life in the way they wish (as long as it does no harm to the people around them).
The old fashioned time when the church dictated exactly how one should live one's life in every detail (eat fish on Friday, you can't use condoms, you will burn in hell etc.) has passed. The message that Christ left was to love one another and to love God - where is Gavin's love for his fellow man or woman ? Jesus is described as being non-judgemental (old, sick, poor, prostitutes etc.) - where is Gavin's willingness to love unconditionally ?
In this recorded discussion, Gavin objects to feminism, to the LGBT community (not just personal choices, but he labels it as some form of plot and dark force), to trans rights (which he thinks consists of people who he would rather did not have the right to live life their own way, even though it does not affect him or harm others) and then makes the strange link to paedophilia. It makes no logical sense and is not backed-up by any facts or evidence, just the personal views of an individual who wants to draw attention to himself by being controversial.
There are so many real issues in the world that would benefit from Gavin's help and kindness; homelessness, cruelty of so many kinds, starvation, wars ...... and yet Gavin wastes his time complaining about 'cultural marxism' and tirelessly criticising the Anglican church (who asked him to leave for being controversial). If he wants to do some real good, stop writing letters to the Times, stop complaining on UA-cam and get out there and help someone without judgment, bias or preconditions. What has he actually done to help anyone other than his own UA-cam ratings ?
It is a sad waste of potential.

(42:40) The Rt. Rev'd Dr Gavin Ashenden:- "As a christian I would say I don't believe in progress, ..... on the whole I don't believe human beings are capable of moral progress."
Another cherry picking christian apologist. We have progressed beyond the moral, ethical and cultural standards of 2000 year old desert dwelling, tribal barbarians.
However, as Charles Darwin said:- “Man with all his noble qualities, with sympathy which feels for the most debased, with benevolence which extends not only to other
men but to the humblest living creature, with his god-like intellect which has penetrated into the movements and constitution of the solar system-with all these exalted powers-Man
still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin.”
― Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man.
Try your moral compass on the following biblical quotes and what they mandate.
Matthew 15:4-7 “He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.” (mandated stoning to death)
Ephesians 6:5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ.
Genesis 19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes:
only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. (here rape my 2 virgin daughters instead of these men)
Judges 19:24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you:
but unto this man do not so vile a thing.(here rape my virgin daughters and this concubine (second Wife)instead of these men)
Dueteronomy 2- 34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:
Deuteronomy 3:6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.
Deuteronomy 20:16 But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:
    Deuteronomy 20:17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites;
as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee: (Kill them all)
1 Samuel 15:8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.(Kill them all)
Numbers 31:18 But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. (slavery)
Numbers 31:9 And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.(slavery)
Judges 21:10 And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, andcommanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead with the edge of the sword,
with the women and the children.(Kill them all)
1 Samuel 22:19 And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings,
and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.(Kill them all)
Genesis 19:32Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. (incest)
Leviticus 21:17-23 KJV Whosoever ... hath any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God. For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish,
he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or any thing superfluous, Or a man that is brokenfooted, or brokenhanded,
Or crookback, or a dwarf, or that hath a blemish in his eye, or be scurvy, or scabbed, or hath his stones broken ... He shall not go in unto the vail, nor come nigh unto the altar,
because he hath a blemish; that he profane not my sanctuaries. (perhaps the disabled should know more about this one)
    And my personal favorite:-
Deuteronomy 25:11-12 When men fight with one another, and the wife of the one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of him who is beating him,
and puts out her hand and seizes him by the private parts, then you shall cut off her hand. ( origin of The Marquis of Queensberry rules:- no grabbing by the jatz crackers)
John Anderson often muses about the discarded history and heritage as weakening our resolve to build a better future from a christian perspective. How about including the 94 apologies
at Vatican II by the pope for historical atrocities of the church, don't forget those! Brushing aside the inqusition and crusades does not quite cut it, how about Bosnia and Rwanda? if you want to hide behind
    that was all long ago.
The American had it right. The First Amendment in the United States Constitution.(although they fail at it miserably)paraphrasing:- as the separation of powers between church and state.
History has shown that "some" of the greatest atrocities perpetrated by humanity is when church and state align or the church is silent. Hitler/ Vatican or Mussolini/vatican both had their
birthdays celebrated by the church even during war years and the pay-off was official status as the religion of state. The German Army belt buckles said "GOTT MIT UNS" which means GOD WITH US.
With God on their side there is no check or moral compass.
I thoroughly enjoy John Anderson's conversations. Perhaps the lack of push-back is because he agrees more often than not with the interviewee. I don't hold John accountable for what his guests say nor for the lack of push-back, I just offer some clarification to the conversation.

Bertrand Russell:- Why I am not a Christian - 1927
You find as you look around the world that every single bit of progress in human feelings, every improvement in the criminal law, every step towards the diminution of war, every step towards the better treatment of the coloured races, or every mitigation of slavery, every moral progress that there has been in the world, has been consistently opposed by the organized churches of the world.
I say quite deliberately that the Christian religion, as organized in its churches has been and still is the principal enemy of moral progress in the world.

I am flabbergasted by the fatalistic views of these two men. This constant need by John to hark back to the good old days of judeo-christian values is extraordinary. Every conversation in this series (and I have seen a few by now) goes into the same theme of lamenting about a horrendous currant world situation and basing it on the fact that Christian values are not adhered too. It’s beginning to get very boring.

Totally disagree, these conversations are absolutely crucial in understanding who we are and where we are going. If it’s getting boring don’t watch it. The rest of us know that this is important work for the public record.

The purpose of John's series is to inquire into the collapse of Western Civilization. Given that the West's values were born out of Judeo-Christianity, it is not surprising that some of his guests would lament their loss. Many of us consider this to be an under-discussed problem.

    • @FilipKrygsman

The difference between studying and learning from the past and displaying grief about an imagined lost world of good, is that never in any of these conversations is there any attempt to end up with a positive message for this world. Almost every conversation is between 2 old privileged white men howling about what they lost without coming up with any answers at all. It’s always about lost Christian values and because of that the world is facing imminent collapse.
The mistrust of younger generations is unbelievable as if to say unless they become Christians, well there is no hope. Social media is being castigated as the evil of all evils.
John always expresses the need for debate, but never participates in a debate after publishing these videos. We are talking about a minority of white privileged baby boomers that still have a strangely hold on power and posses almost all the wealth and then complain nobody is listening to them anymore, weird.

@@FilipKrygsman It may be imagined to you, but for many others the loss is real. And we need look no further for proof of this loss than at your own answer, which contains the kind of bigoted rhetoric that animates so much of the divisive animosity of the modern era.

and there it is... “old, privileged, white men, boomer” those trusty default categories that somehow exempt these peoples opinions as biased and lacking value. I’m flabbergasted that you can use that as position to argue your point and simply shows a total lack of any real debate skills.
In football we say play the ball, not the man... identity politics insists on playing the man and in this method, you shows me continually that it lacks real substance.
At any rate... like I said. Switch it off. You’re a lone voice here.

When a man of this bishops religious status in his opinion expresses fears that marriage equality may lead to pedophilia eventually being accepted or legalised in society, then I loose all respect and feel a great pity for such a person. In this case we are looking at a man who has lost all hope and trust in human beings. Terrible coming from a man who in his religious capacity must have done a lot of work with people in general, much more then any other ordinary person. I dare say this man has even lost faith in his own religion as well. This man after a lifetime of working with people and their problems has learned nothing.
When John and this bishop talk about judeo-Christian values being under a threat, one doesn’t need to look very far into their arguments to realise why they feel like that. Christianity is not under threat. With this kind of understanding of human nature it is perfectly understandable why Christianity is becoming just irrelevant.
People are looking for wisdom not fear mongering of this hideous nature.
