Following KIRINJI and Ohzora Kimishima Ensemble, next up on the tiny desk is yama! The masked and enigmatic singer debuted in 2020 with the hit song Haru wo Tsugeru. Influenced by Vocaloid music, yama's clear and soulful voice quickly captivated Japan's digital-native generation. Having found popularity by posting cover songs online, the prodigy of Japanese internet culture brings their unique sound to NHK's Shibuya office. With a special ensemble of eight musicians and backup singers, yama delivers a breathtaking live performance with exclusive arrangements for the tiny desk. Emerging as a standout amongst a new generation of singers, yama has taken the internet by storm. yama gained attention in 2018 by sharing cover songs on UA-cam. yama's big break came in April 2020 with their first original release, Haru wo Tsugeru, produced by Vocaloid master Whale Don't Sleep. The song went viral, quickly climbing to the top of numerous hit charts. In 2022, yama and Whale Don't Sleep reunited for Shikisai, the ending theme for the second season of the hit TV anime SPY×FAMILY. yama has continued their rise with the opening theme for the second season of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, which began broadcasting in April 2023. yama's unique style and impactful presence has solidified them as a defining figure in Japan's contemporary music scene.
