      Most non power users don't care about gaming or editing anything super big that would require rendering of video or anything like that, chances are they are not going to be running any complicated programs or compiling code, so most really don't need much. Power users, at least half would be happy with the sbc, but gamers and editors/producers, are not going to enjoy this much.
      I seen a pi can run Minecraft java, but that doesn't even matter, I can host a 50 player server running 4gb ddr3 ram in Minecraft 😂

      Maybe not in 2019 but in 2020 it surely is :) But seriously, when you buy a PC/laptop and the seller says, yes, it can do all stuff you need, except err... youtube videos. Ok, no youtube, but it's not huge man come on. And it could be expected without good working HW acceleration. At least not Firefox on Raspbian. Yes, 4th generation of the most popular SBC and in it's best supported OS graphic acceleration is still a shady business..

    Thanks for sharing your tests. Isn't Chromium the only browser on the pi that supports the graphics/video acceleration? i think the graphic stack on the Pi is still not open source - I think vlc just recently got around to it, so maybe some tests with video players might get you better performance. However, I think a used thinkpad in the same price range as pi + sd-card + power supply should still outperform the pi by magnitudes.

  • @kjrchannel1480
    @kjrchannel1480 5 років тому +3

    I think the performance model should be the "A" footprint and the budget tinker the "B". If the Pi foundation doesn't evolve then the Odroid N2 or H2 will take a bigger piece of the pie as time goes on. It has come to the point when it is mandatory to at least have some passive cooling on the 4 because it will clock down real easy. The same goes for the 3B+.

      Nah, its more like to the nature of firefox and chromium. Firefox rely more on the cpu, while chromium, just like chrome, rely on RAM. Pi4 have better memory management than Pi3. So its better to use chromium.
      I have tested Pi3 before with python, so this not really applicable to Pi4. For program that accessing small amount of data, its better to rely on CPU, while accessing data stored on storage (like accessing file) or larger data, its better to rely on RAM. So if you try to open wikipedia on firefox, its faster than chromium as the page doesn't need much data, but with page with animation, video, its faster on chromium, as its stored on ram, which its optimized for. Not as in efficient usage of RAM (as i know chromium is memory hogging), but it prioritize to use RAM for caching rather than CPU cache.
      Well, this is just based on my own final essay experiment on Pi3, but I think my conjecture can be tested.

    You can use the 4B as a desktop, but don't expect it to be all that peppy. I got my first computer in the mid-'80s, so I recall the days when full-sized computers that you'd pay a couple of thousand for were far less powerful than any RPi. I have mine running 24/7 with SETI@Home running when I'm not using it, which is most of the time. One use I put it to is posting five dictionary words of the day from various online dictionaries to a Facebook group for puns and wordplay. I have two 24" monitors. It's very handy to have the dictionary webpage on one screen with the second screen is used to write the entry. I do it in the middle of the night with my main computer shut down in the living area. The Pi is set up in my bedroom and while working on it is considerably slower than my main computer, it's quicker overall to just turn on the screens, do my entries, then turn the screens off as opposed to going to the main machine, waiting for it to boot, then waiting for Firefox to load the many tabs I have open. Then I have to shut it down again for power savings. Is it a great desktop replacement? I'd say no unless your usage is very light and undemanding. It works, but it brings back '90s-era clunkiness.

    • @MrSujano
      @MrSujano  5 років тому +11

      Good question! I wanted to test the load installing an application, and I wanted to test out the experience with different browsers. I could have edited out the Firefox bit, but I kept it in to show the difference between optimized and not. I fully expect more applications to be better optimized in time, which would make the Pi even more feasible for a light duty PC.

    With MS effectively ending support for Win7 in 2020 my wife has 'volunteered' to try a RPi 4 with 4 GB RAM as her daily driver. She primarily uses YT, email, and MS Office apps. If necessary, I have her desktop (Acer something) still readily available for use by pushing a couple of buttons (one monitor, keyboard, & mouse used by both computers.) I haven't tried PIP or split screen yet but I'd bet that's possible though currently only one video output is viewable at a time. I have the printer function of an HP all-in-one working for both. She uses Libre Office on the RPi. Interestingly she has only used the Acer once in the past few weeks and that was just to retrieve a spreadsheet which she then used on and printed via the RPi. Unless the sw one uses is not available via Raspbian (or other OS RPi supports) then, so far, the $100 (all in) RPi 4 as a daily driver for the 'casual user' works admirably (serious gamers, video editors, et. al. look elsewhere). Definitely use a heat sink on and a miniature fan above the CPU (fan obtains power from the GPIO). As a desk jockey, in order to experiment with Linux and RPi further, I plan to include a RPi 4 in the case of my next AMD desktop build.

      You could try Linux Mint Cinnamon on the old Acer for your wife. Not only is it super familiar for Win 7 users, it is a lot snappier. I started using Mint as my daily driver when I saw the preview of Win 10 at work. That day I went home and backed up my data, erased my aging Win XP computer and put Mint on it.
      Several years on and its been great, I'm happier with this than I was with any version of Windows .. clear back to 3.11. Its super easy, I only use the console because some of the more esoteric tools I use are console only.
      Also in the spring of 2018, I got a new 8th gen i7 laptop. Naturally it came with Windows 10, which I booted up to make sure the machine worked and to update the BIOS. After that I nuked it LOL .. Linux Mint handled all the hardware with zero fuss on the first go.

    I wanted A Raspberry Pi 4 with 4Gb, So I bought it... Overclocked it at 2 GHz... Put it in a nice Argon One Case and I am now using it to record music and also as a DAW... Am I happy with it? I have two more powerful Laptops and I think the Raspberry Pi 4 it is what it is... A little inexpensive one board PC that is good for surfing the Internet, everyday basic computer use, writing documents, and yes, recording music and as a Mini DAW...

    This may sound funny but this is the first video that has actually answered a big question that I have asked about the Raspberry Pi, could it substitute for a cheap laptop by being able to connect it to my TV and stream movies and browse the Internet etc. As this video has shown me it cannot. Thank you. Now I know to avoid the product. Even though it sort of worked it was far too complicated and it just felt like so much effort had to be put in just to keep it from melting.

    You don't have to buy a second SD card to install Retropie and awkwardly swap out the SD card each time. Surely it's possible to set up multiple operating systems on one SD card and have some boot manager.

    Few things I didn't like:
    You mention not liking Chromium, and prefer Firefox. Why?
    You mention getting the 4gb over any of the other models. If I'm not in IT, other than 4 being higher than 1 or 2, I won't understand why.
    I do more than watch UA-cam. What about working on documents and spreadsheets? Sharing documents? What about printing out documents? Email?Can my kids do homework? Can I do my taxes?
    Does it play games other than emulated games? Are there games made for the Pi?
    What about temperature? Does that stock case keep the pi from overheating if I'm playing games or watching UA-cam?
    I'm just saying that if i want to to be able to use this little board as my computer, I'd need it to do more than boot up and play UA-cam.

    I use the Pi 4 (4 gb model) as a work machine, which is primarily web-based tasks on a 34" curved monitor without issue. I did find that Chromium performs much better than Firefox. Though was bummed that there isn't a version of Brave for the Pi.

    Not sure, but Chromium might be patched to do hardware video decoding as it is not the official one from debian repos. There some note in the last release notes that made me think it's vaapi/omx enabled. That makes Chrome better for online videos then Firefox, also no cpu load or temp increase. I'd love to see some demos on screen recording on rasberry pi 4, as the GPU is hardware encoding capable.

    The pi 4B+ with 4GB isn't really suited for UA-cam, Facebook or online gaming. It's works best as a business system. this is mostly because the OS is a 32 bit operation system. Now the pi 4 B+ with 8GB is geared to run 64bits OS. This will help run modern day internet apps. But even it will have some issues with hard core gaming. When installing the standard Raspbian OS you have to make sure your installing the 64bit version.

    Video codecs matter. Your videos in HD seem to use VP9 (right click and check "stats for nerds". I think the pi only have h.264 acceleration as far as I know. Chromium probably does h.264 on recognizing the pi whereas firefox uses whatever it's given.
