For existing Raspberry Pi users, please note that you will need to upgrade more than just the board. First of all, you will need a different case as the ports are slightly different. Likewise, you will need a new power cable (USB-C) and HDMI cable(s) (micro-HDMI)

@@GaryExplains I imagine it's to do with VLC not using the NEON instruction set correctly, even on earlier iterations the pi would struggle to play even 1080p video in 'software mode' but players like omxplayer would run them perfectly fine as they offloaded the video stream to the hardware decoding on the chip.

Recent software upgrades have dramatically reduced the overheating problem. Most heavy users will still want to add active cooling or install it in one of the newer heatsink cases. Additional processing power inevitably produces more heat.

If you just want one for tinkering and projects you're better off with the Zero or A+. Much less power usage which is great for battery and solar powered and they are smaller and you're most likely running headless anyway. I know the zero is fine for camera surveillance boards. Now for a router, the 4 would be the thing.

Don't confuse "doesn't do 4k video decoding" (14:26) with this OS not supporting hardware 4K decoding on a Raspberry Pi 4. The pi does do haitch 264 and haitch 265 hardware decoding.

Kudos! Gary, you are so good at what you do, which is explaining stuff. Additionally, you make everything super interesting. That is quite an ability! I have a Raspi 2, model B for playing around, but with Windows becoming a path I no longer want to go down, so the Raspi 4 seems like a GREAT alternative for my regular web surfing, plus my programming. Since my desktop is an old AMD Phenom II X4 955 I don't think it would be much of a step down. Mainly all i need to know is if the 4 has enough horsepower to render videos on youtube and that sort of thing. All good wishes! Of course I'm subscribed, and gave you thumbs-up. PS: I looked at the raspi 4 website, and that's very encouraging! Only $55 for the 4GB SDRAM model and i see that it has hardware Video decoding of HEVC video. [I don't know what that means, but it's GREAT!].

I didn't finish this review because a couple of things said at the beginning of the review were (I feel) a bit misleading. You can't say EVERYTHING will be three times faster because that is a huge generalization and doesn't take other things into account. Also, the main reason it can transfer at over 100MBps is because of the USB 3, USB 2 is not capable of that speed, but it wasn't mentioned until after the speed is talked about.

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  5 років тому

To answer your points. I have a complete set of benchmarks pinned at the top of the comments. It is indeed a generalization that everything is 3 times faster, because some things are 4 times faster. As for the 100Mbps, you seem to be forgetting thst the Pi 3+ had USB 3 and Gigabit Ethernet, but they couldn't realize their max potential due to the bus designs.

I had mine connected to a 4k TV and had problems displaying 4k content in VLC and from youtube in the chrome browser. However I installed Kodi and this was so much better with the 4k content. I believe that there is a known problem with the chrome browser and video at the moment but they are working on it.
The Costa Rica 4k video ran on Kodi with the UA-cam plug-in with a small amount of tearing and buffering. This may have been my wireless or my internet connection.

@Gary Explains I have a quick fix for your low voltage icon problem. 😉 (Also overclocking secret 😅).
Use your OnePlus dash (warp is best) charger for your Pi. Fixed 5v😁 at 6a, (amps are drawn not pushed to Pi).
So when your accessories/overclock, pulls amperage, your voltage doesn't sag because the power supply can supply the required amps.
(If the power supply can't provide the amps, the volts sags. This gives you the warning, because voltage sagging below a certain point can damage the chipset's.)
Equally don't go nuts and now pull tons of power through the board. 🤣 (The way I learned... "The blue smoke, of death". 🤦‍♂️😏). The trick is moderation. 😄 So I'd stay with using what you use at the moment (+ no sag, OPWarp😉), and never see the warning icon again. 😄 😏 Would still leave you a little room for overclocking, but do remember it's all "power through the board", you will need a thermal solution. 😉
If anyone actually reads this far, and is interested, I'll go find the exact model of Noctua 5v 40mm fan that I use. 😏😂
Even comes with all the adapters/crimps for wireing 😆 it to the 5v and ground on the gpio. 😉😎 Almost silent, (like hold it to your ear and it's a whisper) and moves enough air to easily keep the pi cool. 😊
(The fan is a solid rec to anyone, I've be gradually going round "pi/retro arcade UA-camrs" and turning them on to it. 😂 They all got me into pi in the first place, only fair I share back my good finds. 😉✌️I believe it was "Explaining computers", that has it in his Pi extreme cooling video if you want to check it out. 😊😉).
Cheers to anyone who read this far, and have a great day. Peace. ✌️

Even the 28nm process is fairly old, they should've went with a cheap fin fet process. I'm wondering if the current lack of 4k hardware decode is simply a software roadblock.

1:00 You don't need ventilation? As your heat reference at 15:30 indicates it gets hot. Reviews already with it under a heat camera beg to differ (as in using it under load such as those dual 4k video outputs). It (Pi4) should have come with a heatsink as standard, not a mere option. It is (quote) _"uncomfortably hot"_ when doing any decent work (not even thrashing it - just video like not even a movie duration). Ironic how there is a heatwave when it launches. It is a prebuilt system board with an operating system called "noobs" (or raspbian) indicating it is for people who are learning (noobs), not just experts. The official keyboard mouse case bundle has a case that traps in heat.
Personally I think if they were going for a larger board anyway, they could have made it a lot larger and thereby made a case that is bigger with better space to keep it cool. I'd have opted for a 8core or dual quad running lower and underclocked, not largely about making 4k dual video out as a priority. A larger board with it doing 8way parallel processing could have helped students learning about blake2sp and basic polynomials (which some GCSE maths students read about in revision guides between GCSE math and AS or ALevel maths, even if they only wish to do quadratic equations at GCSE).
A bigger case and board being twice an old Pi3, like two side by side, like other brands can mean a square fan could have gone on it if desired. The a53 has been described as server class (and a bunch get used). The a72 is described as mobile device class. Dual quad a53 (like a humble parallel server) or octa-core would have made server sense, let alone a computer module breakout edge connector like say the turing board but with over 8 slots, not just 7. Turing (the father of computing) was largely famous when about encryption and blake2sp would have been a good learning situation with 8way parallel. It need not be the fastest board for that. It is about learning.
Even if they did not go that route (a53 or octacore), the heat it has and its lack of ventilation in a case they want to get extra revenue from is a poor show when they could have prioritised cooling to be "enough" (i.e. don't make the board hot, and spread it over a different CPU setup and put in a better heatsink). A counterargument some might try to make be that they are selling it at a loss. However some people would rather have a board by a different brand that does the right things and costs more (which they may or may not end up using headless). A dose of plague might be 50p but it does not make the purchase good value.
People use clusters of boards too so the board shape and its heat problems on the pi4 might get in the way of that with its a72 dominating the cooling space in a case with its hot a72 spreading heat over the PCB when people have to put in a heatsink. The Pi's website shops (of recommended sellers) has a tiny _"optional heatsink"_ and it will confuse people who will then look fo a bigger one. A good heatsink should have been a standard and supplied (or just us a different chip and do not allude to dual 4k hdmi, Pi). Those hdmi ports will snap like Kofi Annan famously breaking and winding a _OneLaptopPerChild XO_ computer charge handle. And the _"case and keyboard mouse"_ bundle does not give breakout _"mini to female hdmi"_ to convert and keep them safe but foolishly has two hdmi that suggest plugging straight into a monitor.
People (kids and gutted parents alike) will plug that Pi4 straight into two HDMI screens to run 4k and then see the thing overheat and fail to understand why bad consequences occur.
When little Timmy and Tammy plug in their Pi, tech nerds saying _"you get what you pay for"_ will anger the parents or the silver-surfer.
It's not even as if the board currently having more support is an argument as with the Pi3 (which is supported). Debian and BSD and RISCOS (for video issues) and Ubuntu are not "properly" out for Pi4 yet. Or amibian and the media centre stuff.

Everyone comments that the RPI 4 runs hot, requiring everyone to spend extra money for heat sinks. Well, surprise, you needed to do this with the other RPI versions as well, that is unless you are hardly doing any work, which in that case you could have saved a few bucks and used an RPI zero.
My biggest complaint about the RPI 3B+ and earlier is the whimpy micro USB port for power. Plug in nearly any USB device and you get a power shortage lightning bolt.
The RPI 4 has a USB-C port, which is spec'd for more power. We'll see if it works better. I have a CAN bus display in my car ran off a RPI 3B, it should be a little faster with RPI 4 and more RAM should help, now to figure out where to put another 7" waveshare..

Since it has dual screens on the Pi 4, can I attach 2 SF2 Arcade 1up cabinets so I am able to play 3 player & four player games?

Boot up from usb 3.0; 8 gigs ram via an expansion board. A ChromeOS compliance top/expansion board, so that it can run official ChromeOS, plus any other Operating system you need.

Can I run a lightweight 64bit linux distro on Rasp Pi 4 ?
    And then python 3.5+ 64 bit ?

Ubuntu has a pure 64-bit distro for the Pi and I understand the Raspberry Foundation is making a 64-bit version of Raspbian, but I haven't tried it.
