Great Bar but shameful that he's using it to try to justify using ghostwriters. Sorry folks, but i am with Mecca here (although i highly respect cyhi). Rappers should write their own shit, goddamit! Its the only genre where this is important and sorry if i hurt someone's feelings by saying this, but i think less of Drake if i know that he's using ghostwriters. Or to put it differently: If I wouöd believe that Benzino wrote Rap Elvis I would think higher of him after having heard that song. We go in the studio by ourselves to "keep it real" as artists but the people we up against bring in alot of the most talented artists and writers in the world to do music but whatever. Cyhi was right when we do our lyrical thing thats just fight a "civil war" but thats not gonna work to fight a "global war" artistically speaking because the majority of the world don't care how nice our double entendres are.

Yep songwriting a different beast. Jay z most acclaimed songs were not always the most lyrical or the joints the rap world messed with. Same with Snoop. @@leroygreen6310 naw hooks is different. If having a hook 🪝 is ghostwriting then the whole industry be like that. To me having assistance with a whole verse is the no no. Music is collaborative so people share bars, hooks, and concepts. Seen niggas take lines, rearrange whole verses, spit in different cadence, etc. It's the verses or 16s that is more problematic. If a nicca wrote the whole 16 or all of them 16s then you went in there and spit it, that's the egregious thing.

Mecca is missing the point. Adele will have Bruno Mars, Sia, and Herself writing songs on her ONE album. And all three of them have grammies from writing songs. It's not many rappers who by the 4th-5th album people aren't tired of their message, because they've said the same thing over and over and over. That is why a team of writers is important to have when you're competing on THAT level. Otherwise, you're going to continue winning the awards that aren't televised. There are only a handful of rappers who have still been hot OUTSIDE of hip hop on a global level after their 5th album. The rest of them died in hip hop.

Then that means NWA, Ghetto Boys, Snoop, and so many others AREN'T hip hop. How many times hip hop artists have boycotted award shows for NOT WINNING? Y'all are trying to tell hip hop artists how they should feel. You can't say it's not authentic when half of the music is already built off of samples. @@austinaustin140 But it's not unique to me. My definition comes directly from the people who were involved in the creation of the artform back in the 70s and early 80s. If y'all want to call rhinestones diamonds, that's fine if enough people agree with you but that doesn't make it a fact. The fact that certain people became icons in the _business_ of rap doesn't mean whatever they did should be the guideline for how it should be done in hip hop. The problem is that the majority of people refuse to differentiate between the two things. It's like calling Kung Fu karate and then being dismissive when someone says it's not the same thing.

Each opinion is unique to a group of people. That’s the point I’m making. But if you say having co-writers isn’t hip hop. Then 90% of the $ that’s credited to hip hop would not be present. And then you have artists who can do hip hop & other genres as well. Just because Ceelo or Gambino can go make a rock song or pop song, it doesn’t mean their hip hop catalog is any less hip hop.

So heres the thing, unlike other genres of music like pop or rock where people sing and have vocals as their talent or the ability to play actual instruments, rap was all about lyrics, about what YOU said, not what someone else said. Taylor swift can have multiple writers because the talent was the voice. Same thing with Mariah Carey, etc. Rappers can't sing (except phonte) so the pen game was always the talent. It what drove the art.... I can come up with better stuff than you. The spirit of competition. True no one can do it alone but theres as difference between brainstorming and bouncing ideas off one another to spark creativity vs someone just writing the material for you because you lack the writing talent.

What cyhi was saying is the game is different at a higher level. You look at all your favourite film directors they all say they had the super 8 camera and would write, film and edit their own films. But now they are professionals they hire writers, cinematographers, editors, and crew with the result being a better product.

"Cyhi the God" is right like I'm a singer songwriter that writes according to genre whether it's Hip Hop, R&B, Pop, Inspirational, Country, Club and Rock. I mainly Find new artists up and coming not any major artists yet but if they knew who I was then they could market it on a bigger scale than. Little Rock. Though I rather stay low 🗝️ cause it's easier to stay trapped behind the sound waves and not focus on the money aspect.
Thanks Math for having Cyhi on da Cast.

Everybody knows he's a hell of a rapper but once he got to Aftermath/G-unit, he changed his flow, turned heavy on name drops and 50 had written songs for him on The Documentary. Most folks still say that's HIS masterpiece

The difference is that Drake kept it a secret about his ghostwriters and Kanye was up front about who was writing his bars. Everyone knew Kanye had Consequence, Common, Ryhmefest, Cyhi, and others write for him. Therefore no one can use it against him or shane him about using ghostwriters. Drake on the other hand, did not want that information to come out about him having ghostwriters. So drake gets clowned on for calling himself the best and not being up front or shedding light on who writes fro him. Kanye always shouted out his ghostwriters and put them on his albums. Drake tried to play cover up and hide the fact Quentin Miller existed from the beginning. Quentin he was credited as (QM). Thats why we dont see Drake how we see nas, cube, rakim, doom, scarface etc.

most artist feel like Cyhi, Cyhi is completely right, at first you rap for the respect of your peers, after you rap for the respect of the world, so many of Meccas favorite artists have had ppl who wrote the full record for them, it’s literally a video of Kanye West rapping lines for Jayz to say then Jay went in the booth and rapped them verbatim, so we gotta let this whole you can’t be the GOAT if you had ghost writers, Mecca loves taking shots at Drake without sayin Drakes name cause he don’t really want that smoke and Drake don’t pay him no mind at all what so ever, it’s starting to feel click baity and clout chasing now from Mecca when he talks about it 💯💯💯

While we are at it, a lot of top music producers other ppl in the studio helping with beats , especially when it comes to mixing and mastering a song, guess we should take dr Dre, timbaland and Kanye off the list of great producers. You give dmx and snoop the same lyrics, the vibe and delivery comes out completely different. We heard how bout Quentin miller sounded with lyrics he gave drake.
If ppl want to bicker about who’s the best lyricist that’s fine too for the ppl that write their own stuff all the time. But most ppl just want to hear good music. When your in the discussion of Grammys and you’re surrounded by a bunch of l talented ppl who could help you get to the next level, why handcuff yourself to rules that were imposed when it was a small community of ppl.its like going into a prize winning fight with one hand tied behind your back.

I agree with chyi on this topic. Im into lyrics with the rest of the hip hop heads but at some point, rappers need to focus on the business at hand and stop worrying about who's the nicest if it aint going to lead to no money. If adele got 17 people in the studio, why cant our young black kings and queens start having people from their neighborhoods coming together to make great music? Do i want my favorite Mcs to be killing it lyrically but himself, sure! But im not going to stop listening to their music if they got help
