Depends on the need, some do it daily, some do it as a prep before an activity, some do it for recovery!

what if you don't have a foam roller? Are there any other self-myofascial release techniques? can you just get someone to massage your calf?

Why aren't you use pressure for 30 seconds? look for Golgi tendon organs. (Autogenic inhibition)
