Typically they start off by taking classes in theology and philosophy and then get into church doctrine and the practicalities of becoming a priest. Hope that helps!

When my younger kids were little, they got into an argument at Mass. Here was a 4 year old and a 3 year old arguing whether a priest was in persona Christi when vested or all the time. "He's a priest, his name is Father, and he comes to our school," said the 4 year old. "His name is God, but he's only God when he wears the tablecloth. All the other times, then he's Father," the 3 year old retorted. As they are 21 and 19 now, I'm sure they have a better grasp on the subject.
We are renovating a home we bought before moving in. Our priest came to do a blessing for the construction of the house and said to have him back when we are done to bless it when we move in to stay.
@@denisewells2992 that reminds me. We live in Houston & after Harvey & all the flooding, our priest wrote a letter encouraging everyone affected to have their home blessed. There were soooo many homes completely ruined. He, the other priests & the deacons are probably still blessing homes.😊
I can help a little with that. So, very broadly, a diocesan priest is assigned by his bishop to somewhere in his diocese. A religious priest is assigned somewhere on the planet by his superiors. In both cases, there can be a conversation about what your skills are/ where you could be best used - but the decision would be ultimately be up to the superior in either case.

I have a couple follow up questions if that’s OK! How much free time to priests have in a day/week? Does it ever get lonely? Are there rules about what kinds of activities priests can engage in (beyond the general counsel all are encouraged to follow)?

I'd love to hear more about priests and celibacy... I've heard that some parts of the priesthood are discipline (celibate) that could be altered without doctrinal change, while other aspects are inherent to the office of priesthood (Catholic, male) and would take a change in the Catechism to shift. I'd love to know more about this, especially in light of the Amazon Synod!

Huge question for me because I really want to know more about this topic of the spiritual realm what God does why we do certain things. And it all centers around sacraments sacramentals and blessings. Other than acknowledging adoration and worship to God when we genuflect make the sign of the cross and things of that nature what does bless seen actually do or mean? What do sacramentales mean and are they really so different than sacraments and blessings? And the something external actually go on when we are participated in these actions or things? And if so how Do I understand that?
You see, Jesus gaves us the 7 sacraments, wich one with a function: Baptism: you may now recive other sacraments and you are washed from original sin Sacrament of Order: you are now a Priest Marrige: you and your lover are united and will seek the heaven for each other Confession: you repent your sins and you want the forgiviness of God and the strength to not sin again The Body of Christ: you recive in the mass, the Blood and Body of Jesus There is another (wich i do not know the name in english) that you recive when you are about to die, it gives you the strength to repent your sins in this hard time, there is another that gives you the Holy Spirit and 7 gifts to help you be better these are the sacraments that help us to be Saints. Blessings are gifts God give us, we can ask for them in prayer for us or for others, everything is a blessing, you can speak, hear, walk, smell etc... My English is not the best and i study most of things in portuguese, i dont know some names but this is it
@@mranderson380 I definitely appreciate what you wrote. And I know what the sacraments are. But I was wondering what goes on behind them that is so significant in a spiritual sense along with sacramentals and blessings
@@alanrburt The Blood of Jesus goes behind the sacraments, they are both a precious gift and an necessity, living without sacraments is really hard, they are our way of life, and the Chruch takes care of it, Jesus gave us them by His Sacrifice, its our chance to be Saints
@@mranderson380 I understand the idea behind the blood of Christ and The broken body on the cross as the perfect sacrifice for sin so that man can now be reconciled to God. That is clear. Now When it comes to the sacraments blessings and sacramentales as an entire whole category of those 3 what spiritualy goes on? Is there something uniquely spiritual? What does that look like? Apart from the grace that God gives us is it just psychosomatic? Or is it more? I realize this is an impossible conversation over Written communication. I am fully aware that I can't completely communicate this well. But I appreciate your efforts and your answers have been exemplary. Is just my asking the questions have been sub par I realize that

@@yoylos3p thank you. I found a station on the am dial. I appreciate your response.
@@kavitadeva If you liked Fr Mike, he has a whole series, and it is ongoing. Ascension Presents is a very neat resource, and for any Christian perspective, I'd recommend subscribing.

I want to understand more about the "Relics and Images of the saints " thank you 😁
Nonsense Nonsense Now I want to ask my priest "where did you put the relic?" 😊
In acts, paul's utensils were used by people to heal themselves.
In the old testament, a corpse went back to life when he was hastily thrown to elisha's bones.
But my examples should not distract you about the healing power of relics. All power come from God.
Oh there is, just look for in in the videos section of ascension presents ♥
What do priests wear when doing their hobbies like running , lifting, swimming, hunting, activities that require slightly different clothes???
Every year our parish has a celebration together after lent/Easter called Party on the Lot (held on a parking lot at church). Our pastor has been known to show up in a Hawaiian shirts, shorts & sandals & help serve beer! He’s a fun guy & a wonderful priest.
@@MoogieB Growing up, my priest wore a hawaiian shirt, shorts, socks, and sandals pretty much whenever he wasn't in vestments. This didn't seem strange to my child brain, at the time.
They wear clothes.
Our last one wore a brown Carmelite hoodie, sweatpants, and gym shoes. The present one wears a matching running outfit.
Who cares?
Before becoming a Priest, what did you have to learn? How long did it take to become a Priest? Thank you for sharing.
I was seriously considering becoming a priest for several years. It depends on the order you join (diocesan, missionary, etc.) In general, it can take anywhere from 6-12 years to become a priest. Typically they start off by taking classes in theology and philosophy and then get into church doctrine and the practicalities of becoming a priest. Hope that helps!
Really enjoy your videos. As a senior Catholic all my long life. I knew all your answers. Nice to know some things remain the same.
God Bless you! 🇨🇦☃️🙏🏽
I truly pray for all truly good, goodness, inocent priests, nuns, brothers, sisters, catholics, bishops, Cardinals, others in church.
Hi Father Mike! This isn't related to your video on priests, but I would love it if you could do a video on Vatican ll. I would love to have some straightforward information on the purpose of Vatican II and what happened during it.
MaryKate Larson i second this!!
I think bishop baron did a video on this.
Read the book by John O’Malley on Vatican II. It’s been recommended to me by a Jesuit, who also says it’s very readable and informative.

Ooooh! Yes, I read that a relic is in each altar. I wonder if each altar comes with a document to advise what Saint's relic is embedded within it. I must ask my own parish priest. Great talk Fr Mike! 👍
Stephen Sims May God allow us to breakaway from any bondage that holds us to glorify his holy name.
I don't know why...but after watching Marilyn Manson in the new pope, I would love to hear a conversation between MM and Father Mike.

I want a priest to bless my apartment
After hearing his answer, I think that’s a GREAT idea!
Moogie B God’s love unites everyone in the Truth.
I’m about to move in a month, so I’m so glad I’ve watched this video.
Do priests get assigned their parishes or diocese or do they have some say?
Also, what are the tracks to priesthood?
I can help a little with that. So, very broadly, a diocesan priest is assigned by his bishop to somewhere in his diocese.
A religious priest is assigned somewhere on the planet by his superiors.
In both cases, there can be a conversation about what your skills are/ where you could be best used - but the decision would be ultimately be up to the superior in either case.
I have a pic with fr Mike, he was doing mission in NC an hour away from me, I was like I'm driving out there...

Wonderful ✝️
I have a couple follow up questions if that’s OK!
How much free time to priests have in a day/week? Does it ever get lonely? Are there rules about what kinds of activities priests can engage in (beyond the general counsel all are encouraged to follow)?
This is great, many thanks! At about 8:20 you give an explanation that greatly expands my understanding and point of view of the Altar and the Mass of this life-long Catholic. Wow! 💖
Where do Priests get the relics of the Saints to embed in the altar? I can’t imagine that there’s a “store” for such things?! Picturing Saints & angels surrounding the altar is so very uplifting to people in the pews. How inspiring to know that we’re in the actual presence of such holy beings…..& that they’re also praying for us! 🙏🤗👍
Fr Mike is such a Hero for Our Catholic Faith, and for all Non Catholic Christians. I wish I had seen this clip before. Father, you definitely have a sense of humor, charismatic, love and live life to the fullest. And Gosh, I admire you, for having such high spirit; but also loving The Lord and Scripture. Ask Fr. Mike, You mentioned that priest can marry if there coming from another religion. I was raised catholic still practice within my home, But I went on a search to learn different religions, what a benefit it was to my curiosity, but there was a change and took title as Minister for the Universal Life Church, received my degree's, But the Universal Life church has no problem with marriage's, I took my vows to marriage, and been very happy together for 40years, but my heart is still to be a catholic priest, but there is a problem my spouse is a another gentleman. I love him, and my Christian belief for the love of Jesus. What can you say to this situation, I had sent this to another Catholic priest, never heard back. I don't want to wait to long I just turned 70yrs.
Please ask your supervisors any answer is better than Nothing.
Not necessarily a religious person, and certainly not Catholic, but I like this channel. Fr. Mike makes me wish I wasn't such an asshole.

On October 27, 2014, Pope Francis issued a statement at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences that "Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation," warning against thinking of God's act of creation as "God [being] a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything."

why do we seek God and heaven when the angels or watchers chose the earth and earthly women over being with God in heaven? isnt heaven a paradise like no other? perfect and beautiful in every way we could imagine? Why would God's Angels choose to leave their perfect abode? especially if its 1000 times more beautiful and they can be with God Almghity? i dont understand that! im not sure if any present day human can answer that question really...since they have NOT been to heaven or seen God. Are we being lied to about its beauty and perpetual feeling of love and joy? the bible seems to be full of contradicitions and paradoxes like that! why? sincere thanks to anyone who can answer that question!!!
My son has always been in private catholic schools. I had a hell of a time to get any priest to do the memorial service when my husband died last year. My son is having a hard time applying to colleges since now I am a widow. I had no help from anybody. Not even one person helped me since my husband died! One prayer for us is all I ask.

What about the white tab on the Roman collar, Fr. Mike?! It's the best part à la the last two chapters of "the Exorcist" by William Peter Blatty!
Dear Father Mike,

Nobody is going to ask the obvious questions about priests and scandals? Okay. I'll ask one. Why don't priests get who are accused get moved out of a parish instead of made to stand trial for the accusations from the victims of these many scandals? Do certain priests think they are above the law?
Always a joy listening to you Fr. Mike!
Question: The bible doesn't teach that a priest can't get married. It clearly states be the husband of one wife. So my main question is why are their restrictions on marriage? Also, do these restrictions on marriage result in the huge amount of sexual abuse?
How long does it take for you to prepare a homily? What is the process?

Another question please, not about priests though: how many named archangels does the church recognise and why is Michael referred to as a saint while Gabriel isn’t? Thanks 😀
Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are all recognised saints in the Catholic Church.
Brendan O'Brien Thanks. Are there any others?
@@retroactivejealousy-worldl1805 please don't take this for Gospel (I'm not one of the Evangelists LOL), but I'm pretty sure that the Bible has a passage(s?) talking about the 7 angels who are at the same level as the three we know about, but these are the only ones mentioned in the Bible, the only ones we know by name. I have a feeling that another was mentioned by name in an apocryphal text (one of the books not approved for the official Bible in the 4th century), but again, I'm unsure.
@@brendanobrien69 Yes that makes sense. Aren't Gabriel, Michael, Raphael and Uriel known as the Four Patriarchs? Come on Father Mike, lets have a video on Archangels and Catholicism, please?
why do most priests not wear cassocks anymore? But I do hear it is coming back? Why did the priests stop wearing cassocks? Is it constricting or too expensive than the pants and shirt?
Huge question for me because I really want to know more about this topic of the spiritual realm what God does why we do certain things. And it all centers around sacraments sacramentals and blessings. Other than acknowledging adoration and worship to God when we genuflect make the sign of the cross and things of that nature what does bless seen actually do or mean? What do sacramentales mean and are they really so different than sacraments and blessings? And the something external actually go on when we are participated in these actions or things? And if so how Do I understand that?
You see, Jesus gaves us the 7 sacraments, wich one with a function:
Baptism: you may now recive other sacraments and you are washed from original sin
Sacrament of Order: you are now a Priest
Marrige: you and your lover are united and will seek the heaven for each other
Confession: you repent your sins and you want the forgiviness of God and the strength to not sin again
The Body of Christ: you recive in the mass, the Blood and Body of Jesus
There is another (wich i do not know the name in english) that you recive when you are about to die, it gives you the strength to repent your sins in this hard time, there is another that gives you the Holy Spirit and 7 gifts to help you be better these are the sacraments that help us to be Saints.
Is just my asking the questions have been sub par I realize that
@@alanrburt that is far beyond what i've studied, i tried my best but i think you should ask this to a Priest
