I have a close friend on the force here in NYC and a few of my relatives also, also know a few people around the neighborhood, great people, won't hurt a flee. But the problem is the police union, they protect the criminals on the force.
I would not put blind faith in Cops, just bc they’re Cops, now. Just like some other professions, being a Police Officer can and does attract “types” of ppl, who shouldn’t be in that line of work. They’re unsuitable. Police need, badly, to screen applicants for Police Academy. EXTREME VETTING. Including any past, verifiable, violent or aggressive behaviors, Anger issues, any bigotry/hatred of any group of people. Y’all know,...like that. Same as we should require of any profession or Political Office.
@@hidragon.3096 yes he is, you can already tell by everything that's going on, I can't say trump is winning because of unknown variables but biden is definitely losing huge, the democratic party is eating itself alive. Everyone is leaving it.
Ask Me Exactly!!!! How can you watch your fellow cop beat and kill someone, say nothing, then get mad when people say fuck the police, all of them are bad?
Some bad assumptions there. -First assumption that the bad cops are doing bad things in front of good cops. -Second assumption that the good cops did nothing. -Third assumption that anything will happen to a bad cop if a good cop stopped and turned in said bad cop.
Novare - I was married to a cop. They saw bad cops do stuff all the time and there was a 100% absolute code of silence. If a bad cop was actually caught and sent to trial, a whole group of cops would take time off work and flood the courtroom seating areas in order to intimidate the jury. It was like a mafia. But I agree with your last point. The system in most cases is designed to shield the cops from accountability. It's a vicious circle.
I mostly agree. Although there must also be strong pressure not to inform on your colleagues. And a strong chance that if you do, a corrupt clique will get you ostracised or fired. Which probably leads to wilful blindness.
Cops? Cowards? Putting their lives on the line every day to protect the people of our country is now considered cowardice? Wow, wtf happened to the intelligence of our generation
@@drowsy_mouse8406 If she had committed a violent crime and was fighting the officer, I'd probably help restrain her, but I'd expect you think all violence is bad even if it's for a just cause so I don't expect you to understand
@Roy M, This country is NOT a democracy, it's a Constitutional Republic. There is a HUGE difference. "And to the democracy, for witch it stands, one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all"? That sound right to you?
For every "bad" video of police there are COUNTLESS good ones. And the "bad" ones are not usually bad. Ugly, yeah, but that is what crime fighting entails. If it scares you, cover your eyes, snowflake.
So punching someone who isn't even resisting much is crime fighting and not "bad"? Just seem like excessive force to me, but what do I know, I am just non-right wing sane person. I am pretty sure if I was a cop, and my backup has a woman pinned, I would just cuff her if arresting her and not giving her head trauma. But, what do I know, I am just a perfect little snowflake, unlike you rugged American patriots who always goes on and on about freedom and people's rights. Until someone gets arrested that is, then it's guilty before proven innocent.
Enough with the PC Even if there were countless good videos for every bad one, it does not excise the bad ones. Most people do countless good things for every bad thing they do. It doesn’t excuse the bad behavior. The punishment for having being near open container of beer while a minor is not to be beaten senseless by the police. The punishment for selling loose cigarettes is not to be choked out and killed by the police. And the punishment for lawfully carrying a firearm, or playing with a toy gun, while black is not to be executed by a police officer-no matter how “scared” he was-especially when white people can walk into Starbucks carrying assault rifles and no one blinks an eye. The police need to be held accountable for their actions, just like everybody else.
Again- these aren't "bad." They are violent, yes, but if a person is not complying witht the law force must be used. What's the alternative when a bad guys says "F-you police, I'm going to contunue to break the law." The cops should just say "oh well we wouldn't want them to have a poor experience so let's just leave." These vids are just "bad" to the weak, child like liberal snowflakes. It might be scary- but grow up.
Enough with the PC Resorting to strawman argument now I see. The people being arrested are already disabled, just cuff and drag the to the backseat. How is continuing hitting someone already down proper arrest procedure? These are bad, period.
It seems to be the way they are trained, I can understand cops in America are little more twichy, since they are policing the most heavy armed nation on earth
If the social dynamic is made by a majority of good cops than no it wouldn't be hard. That's the point. I had a cop tell me personally about 20 years ago you have to be an asshole to be a cop. But it's even more than that, they are not trained to serve, they are trained to be like this.
The length of time required to complete academy training averaged 21 weeks, or 840 hours, as of 2003, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. In Germany 24 to 36 months.
I was in training for 10 months. But that was 2 evenings a week and all day on Saturdays. We did have extended sessions for firearms training and driving skills, those were all day for 6 consecutive days each. And that was the most in the state.
@@prepperjonpnw6482 He did say "averaged" so your single experience doesn't tell us much. But it should be more in both cases, police need to be really well trained for their own and everyone else's safety.
We ask for certified technicians to work on our cars and houses, yet we do not ask for the same capacitation level to hold up the law and take care of PEOPLE? Where is "Don't do to others what you wouldn't like on you"..?
Police need to be constantly training, and testing. Personally I know its a hard job ,but you cannot be afraid to protect and serve the people and the badge should not give you a licence to kill or abuse. Law enforcement should be held at a even higher standard for the crimes they participate in,and accountability is a must. personally I think they should be required to have yearly or bi-yearly psychological test, & frequent training to make sure they are fit to hold such a position.
We all can be people like Bill, i feel i am one too. I get yelled at by my own liberal side because their methods is the same as their enemies or at least getting there. See for something for what it is more, you can still have your own bias opinion but keep in mind its your opinion not a fact.
What surprises me most about all the police brutality videos is the fact that none of the officers who are witnessing their co-workers beating a defenseless person say something, none go "hey wow, wtf are you doing, he's pinned down, stop" none say anything they just stand and watch. If your not going to report misbehaving to your superiors at least say something in the moment, pull them, stop them, just something that could be the difference between someone leaving with some bruises to leaving with a broken leg. I don't get that part of it.
I believe that when you join the police force, older colleagues will teach you how it's done, and you have to follow. If you disagree, if you speak your mind, if you rat someone out to superiors, you're as good as gone because you're not part of the team. They'll gang up on you and force you out. It's either go along with things you have trouble accepting or get the hell out, and who wants to quit and find a better job?
They're terrified of losing their livelihoods, or their lives. Cops have been known to murder their fellow officers when those officers try to stop misconduct. Ask Frank Serpico.
Def Misanthrope I read an article about one cop who reported a colleague for "excessive force". Then afterwards the cop said he found a dead-rat on his car and other officers would intentionally ignore his calls for "backup" (putting his life on the line), until finally the police department regulated him to "desk duty". That's what police departments do, they punish the "good" cops while enabling the "bad" cops.
Phillip White Corps mentality. Was introduced into policing in the early 20th century to instill some sense of discipline and fight corruption. That's why you have all these stripes and military rank calling in modern police. Unfortunately they also adopted the sense of unbreakable solidarity among each other, they now sort of try to combat that with some "the bad ones make all of us look bad" addresses but it will at least linger on for a while. IMHO PBA cards is one of the things they need to actually prosecute. Explain any foreigner what a PBA card is and they look at you like your from a third world country. That and police training just has to be a lot longer, in many states you're faster on duty (though still technically in training) then it takes you to get a barber license.

fight or flight instincts. the police already made a mistake by letting her walk away. police use force to be on top of a situation and to be the ones that control. once a suspect STARTS to be combative it is time to "pounce" on them to keep control. she was drinking and was going out of control. you would change your comment if she turned around and picked up a knife. they did what was right and just. think of how many times in a day the police put their own lives at risk. they aren't going to take a chance.

I understand the job is tough. But some professions just can't have any bad apples and law enforcement is one of them. Pilots are another. If American Airlines told customers that while *most* pilots like to land on the airstrip, they'll just have to accept that a few would prefer to crash into a mountain, no one would fly with American Airlines ever again. So why is it that we're okay with *some* cops violating protocol and committing acts of excessive force and brutality against civilians, just because most cops would never do that? We shouldn't allow it from anyone, and the first offense should always be grounds for automatic termination regardless of the circumstances.
"The police attract bullies like the priesthood attracts pedophiles" WOW! It's so damn true..... Edit: Well......I did not expect that kind of a response. I guess I should clarify that I always respect law enforcement. I hold them to a high standard as well. I’m thankful enough to have known incredible police officers who do their job really well, have pride doing it, and also care about human life (New England has a good track record of this). We have to weed out the shitty cops who use violence unnecessarily, though. That’s why NFL players protest.
The police are supposed to be better than all the rest of us. I'm thankful enough to know some incredible police officers that do their job properly with pride. We can't ignore there are some that don't. This is why NFL players kneel. That's why speaking up against police abuse is necessary.
What does the national anthem have to do with fucking bad cops? Or anybody? The national anthem is about america - not all the fucked up shit in america. Why not protest the police? Call them to task, ask them to resign? Oh, they dont have a problem taking paychecks from america - dont see them boycotting america's banks, just her song, eh?
The national anthem is about America, not all the fucked up shit in america... So what exactly do you think america is than? People right? Or do you think it only means the land? Meanwhile the right is deregulating businesses, removing consumer protection, environmental protection, health , you name it. If it costs corporations any bottom line they will destroy it regardless of how terrible it is for the future of the country. And you want to talk about your patriotism? @Enough with the PC It's the job of Police to keep us from getting hurt... not to hurt us less than the criminals do. The cops are supposed to protect the citizens, even from each other. It's literally part of their job to not beat us if they don't have to, it's called "unnecessary force" for a reason
Yeah, and you are FAR from an expert on unnecessary force. Again- it ain't pretty- but many of these criminals- yes criminals- resist lawful arrest. When they are fighting the police, the police need to use pain compliance to get them under control. Dragon Fox - So, when challenged, you discuss the 'phobic' part of 'Islamophobic' and not the fact that, out of nowhere, you brought Muslims into the conversation? *That* is the bit that made you Islamophobic, not your knowledge of phobias, dude... You literally brought them into this out of context and out of nowhere, so Dewayne's right - you're Islamophobic as shit.
Bill is totally on point here. Awesome job. I know some great cops whom I've nothing but respect for, but I've met nasty, completely unprofessional officers as well, and when your job involves carrying a loaded weapon and wielding extraordinary power over ordinary citizens there should be no tolerance for any lack of professionalism or abuse of power, regardless of how widespread the problem is.

This goes for being trigger happy too! "Last year, in total, British police officers actually fired their weapons three times. The number of people fatally shot was zero. In 2012 the figure was just one. Even after adjusting for the smaller size of Britain’s population, British citizens are around 100 times less likely to be shot by a police officer than Americans. Between 2010 and 2014 the police force of one small American city, Albuquerque in New Mexico, shot and killed 23 civilians; seven times more than the number of Brits killed by all of England and Wales’s 43 forces during the same period. The explanation for this gap is simple. In Britain, guns are rare. Only specialist firearms officers carry them; and criminals rarely have access to them. The last time a British police officer was killed by a firearm on duty was in 2012, in a brutal case in Manchester. The annual number of murders by shooting is typically less than 50. Police shootings are enormously controversial." www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2014/08/armed-police ____ German police fired just 85 bullets total in 2011 worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/05/11/11662345-german-police-fired-just-85-bullets-total-in-2011 "Meanwhile, in the United States, The Atlantic reported that in April, 84 shots were fired at one murder suspect in Harlem, and another 90 at an unarmed man in Los Angeles."
Yeh, and the result is that London, which has no guns, has more crime than New York City, which does have guns. Rape murder and child molestation is becoming common place all across Europe and the police turn a blind eye to it.

Hirnlego999 👍👍👍 Was going to write the same thing. In Britain they arrested all terrorists related to the biggest plot the world has ever seen with only unarmed police, many of whom were female officers. Police brutality is directly linked to gun control.
Alva Goldbook Murder rate in Europe is just a fraction of that in US. Common place? Not at all. Rape figures are higher. True. But is it because Europeans are more likely to report it?
Apparently US police are assessed at the END of their training, not the beginning, and all that time and money has been spent on them by then so........
That's two things they are smarter about than Americans. they legalized marijuana and initiated programs fix their other drug problems many years ago. and this Country can't fix these problems still. a person would think this Country would take a hint from them.
If the police (whom I firmly agree that 90% are fantastic individuals serving and protecting their communities) have nothing to hide (the bad/racist 10%) then what is their gripe about body cameras? Let the public see what your doing so everyone can see the fantastic work that you do on a daily basis, simple.
Anthony Watson None of the footage can be released to protect the privacy of people appearing in the recordings. It's almost only released in connection with actual cases. I totally agree with you, though...
Actually, there are several police departments that welcome having bodycams. The real problem is that even when they record officers clearly breaking the law, there is little repercussion aside from being put on administrative leave (with pay, of course).
brainflash1 True... Sessions isn't helping this AT ALL either... If a Democrat was in the White House, I suspect we may have seen a reform based on the movement going on, similar to what we saw with MeToo. But with Jeff Sessions, no way...
I’ve always maintained that police brutality and excessive force is more the result of inadequate training and bad hiring than systemic racism, but it’s absolutely incumbent on the many good cops out there to help rein in the bad ones who sully their profession’s name
In other countries training to be a police officer takes years. In the USA it can take as short as 21 weeks. And get this, you get in easier if you've had military training before...
@@MrAronymous Big parts of police work are discipline, strength, and cool-headedness in an intense situation, and military are good at those things, it's their core principles. If I had a 20 year Ranger vet training in my force, I'd skip the parts about discipline and keeping a cool head, they know that shit like it's the back of their fucking eyelids.
Most of these videos are blocked from being shown to jury when deciding if they need to be charged. It's like the DA and the cops have each others back
"We used to have a rampant crime problem, so we hired more cops. Now we have a cop problem." Harlan Ellison, circa 1960s-1970s, I think, and I'm paraphrasing.
Well, if Harlan Ellison was saying that in the 60s or 70s, Ellison was way off by decades. It wasn't until the mid/late 90s that we finally saw a drop-off in crime (thanks to Bill Clinton and Joe Biden!). But, yes--THEN--we didn't re-evaluate our policing policies. We should have. And we're paying the price now. But things were anarchy before.
I like how 2 guys went on a shooting spree in North Hollywood like 20 years ago, so now every cop gets military gear and anti-aircraft rocket launchers... makes sense :P
One big issue is that many police departments don't have the budget to train officers... so they hire former combat military and those roles couldn't be more different. This is one reason why it feels now more than ever that the police are an occupying army rather than an extension of our civilian government to aid in keeping the peace.
Fuck that, military personnel have way more trigger discipline than your average police officer. If police had to follow the same rules of engagement as the military, we'd all be better off. edit: I should probably qualify that by saying not all branches of the military have the same level of training or experience in combat situations. But by and large, the police force would benefit from having more combat veterans in their ranks.
The military has alot more discipline than police so I doubt hardly many departments do this otherwise it would show. Military are trained to not point there guns at people who arent legit targets and they are taught not to fire unless fired upon first. Most cops dont do either of those things. Its shoot first ask questions later bullshit.
I'm a vet and I didn't say that they were good. Guys who have skills either have a skill to come back to in the real world or can always make a sick paycheck with one of several merc...er...military consulting companies. Guys I knew who were MPs have all been superlative civilian police. Thing is that some guys who've been in combat don't have the mentality to be civilian officers. It's just one part, I know. Lots of factors.
I'm a service-connected disabled vet and I spend time at the VA talking to plenty of vets. Yes, in general, that's true. Military people tend to have more discipline. But whether in uniform or merc'd up with outfits like Blackwater, we don't get Abu Ghraib or the Blackwater massacre in Baghdad because everyone in the military always has discipline in every instance. There are plenty of former combat vets who go into law enforcement. Many do well and remember their training. Some do not. The "bad cops" aren't all just donut eaters who are scared of PoCs. The bigger issue is that cities and counties typically don't have the resources to properly train police and thus, they rely on the bigger cities like LA, NY, Chicago, etc or the military to do the training. There isn't a single state with a uniform standard for police training so we have something like 18,000+ PDs and Sheriffs offices just out there winging it. I've talked to plenty of cops who are former military. Some are outstanding...and I've met a few who downright scare the crap out of me because they have no business in a position as a police officer.
Maybe you all need to train your cops better at a centralized location so they can all get the same training. The RCMP here in Canada does and we do it the same for all officers.
Would that be the same RCMP that seems to have a culture of sexism??...The same RCMP that essentially murdered Robert Dziekanski in Vancouver???... The same RCMP that didn't have the fire power to stop a murderous nut job in New Brunswick a few years ago??...ALL cops have the same issues...
Watson - so you managed to cite 3 cases that are spread out over years, and you equate that to the DAILY examples of brutality that happen in the States. You are really desperate for a level playing ground but you're so far off that it's amusing. How are sexism and didn't have enough firepower the same thing as 5 cops beating a woman, or the constant killing of unarmed citizens? No ... all cops don't have the same issues.
Watson Roadster we learn from our mistakes but WOW we do seem to do better than your weekly or sometimes daily bad cops stories. We do not murder deaf people in their cars or beat up 20 year old girls on a beach for no reason. BTW the cops who were murdered in Moncton ( where I LIVE) we ambushed. We don’t go around assuming everyone is about to kill us. Most people do not own guns. I think the best thing you can say about that was we brought the suspect in ALIVE and he is in jail for murder. In the US he probably would have been killed in a shootout. The RCMP is working on its sexism problem. Sometimes it takes time. The #Metoo movement helped with this. Best of all, when I get pulled over here I don’t fear for my life. I’m a 46 year old white woman. When I was stopped for a burnt out taillight in Florida this winter my heart was pounding in my chest. I’ll take our system over your any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Also, I can be proud that we don’t take children away from their parents at our border cause we are HUMAIN. I might not be politically supportive of my prime minister but at least I’m not embarrassed by his actions on an hourly basis.
In a lot of smaller communities, RCMP are the local police. But even though they have their own issues, the RCMP is far superior to American law enforcement. Local police in some areas (like Thunder Bay, ON) have some major issues with racial profiling though.
Most cops are fine individuals who we must respect for protecting us. BUT they need to speak up and denounce those "bad apples" rather than hiding them and protecting them. And like Bill they must pass a psychological screening which amazingly is still not required
Are they really fine individuals if they not only do not speak up but protect those bad apples? I don't know that any amount of public service can compensate for that level of complicity.
Fernando Garcia, I believe that police officers (or any other person in a position to arrest citizens) should be required to have a 4 year degree, preferably in Criminal Justice AND they should also have a Minor in Psychology!! When these people are given the task to “Protect and Serve” they should be well trained and be able to identify a situation where de-escalation is used rather than escalating the situation. My 33-year-old son was the victim of police brutality almost one year ago and he is still going to court every month...with no end in sight. The officers stopped him while he was walking home on a Sunday night and within seconds had pepper sprayed him, broken his nose and broke his humerus bone in half! He had to have surgery to insert a steel plate and 11 screws in his left arm. They continue to collude with the officers on the scene and are not telling the truth about what really happened. It’s one huge conundrum! Oh...and there were no body cams and no witnesses. I will take a knee any day when the National Anthem is played!!!!
(Reuters) New Jersey on Thursday unveiled reforms to crack down on steroid abuse by police, including random drug testing. The new rules follow lawsuits claiming excessive force by officers in the throes of steroid rage filed against New Jersey police, according to a report released by New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow. The report was the result of a six-month investigation into allegations that a doctor illegally supplied police and firefighters with anabolic steroids, human growth hormones and other muscle-building drugs. Dr. Joseph Colao, now deceased, may have illegally prescribed steroids to 248 public safety officials, mostly police and firefighters, the report concluded.

N.J. doctor supplied steroids to hundreds of law enforcement officers, firefighters Posted Dec 12, 2010 3 2.3k shares By Amy Brittain & Mark Mueller/The Star-Ledger On a rainy August morning in 2007, the news rippled through New Jersey’s law enforcement ranks, officer to officer, department to department. Joseph Colao was dead. The 45-year-old physician had collapsed in his Jersey City apartment, the victim of heart failure. Within hours, officers were calling the Hudson County public safety complex. "Is it true?" they asked, recalled Detective Sgt. Ken Kolich, who’d drawn the routine assignment to look into the death. "Did Dr. Colao die?" Kolich didn’t suspect foul play, but he found it odd - and a little disturbing - that so many officers were interested in the fate of a man with no official ties to any police agency. Today, it’s clear Colao was more than just a doctor, friend or confidant to many of the officers. He was their supplier. A seven-month Star-Ledger investigation drawing on prescription records, court documents and detailed interviews with the physician’s employees shows Colao ran a thriving illegal drug enterprise that supplied anabolic steroids and human growth hormone to hundreds of law enforcement officers and firefighters throughout New Jersey.
He said similar things also in this interview with Stephen Colbert from 4 years ago: ua-cam.com/video/pXvVnvQOMQ0/v-deo.html I do think that most police officers are "good cops", but they're not the problem, the problem is the bad ones.
As a fellow veteran myself, I absolutely agree. While the kneeling is somewhat disrespectful to the anthem, it is a completely peaceful act of protest to an epidemic of police brutality and lack of accountability.
Linus Usman actually, it does. It’s the perfect place for a pedophile to hide. A place that has a cultural stranglehold. With the privilege of being considered sacrosanct, and easy access to gullible children. And, especially if you’re catholic, your organization will actively cover up your crimes, protect you from prosecution should your crimes ever come out (if they come out). Can you even think of a better place to hide as a pedophile?
Power imbalances are a product of Authoritarianism. It's not just government but is also in management positions in retail and fast food. Trust me, it gets old really fast when someone who doesn't value you as a person abuses their power to make themselves feel better about themselves. I've learned to appreciate libertarianism especially on the political left.
I have the same comment about cops as as I do republicans, just saying you're not the same bad person that your party and president is while doing nothing about it, you're just as complicit for being an enabler. Of course, there are bad cops, there will be bad cops just like there will be bad teachers or bad parents, it's an inevitably, but that doesn't mean all cops are bad just because of some cops doing bad things.
@@geordanlemon Did you watch the video? He says that exactly. And then he quotes the stats about how many cops experience their colleagues using undue violence. And then you know that a lot of cops are bad.
"Land of Freedom" my holy ass: America has and has always had some of the most restrictive laws on alcohol on the planet, even some Muslim countries are more relaxed than that and I'm not even kidding.
1:44 Exactly, it's always been for that but honestly it's a shame how Trump and others made it like they don't care about the anthem, flag or the country.
Cops Are Cowards. I've been documenting & snipping out their trampling of our legal rights from the mid-1960s onward, until the file simply became too big. I'm old enough now to remember all the times cops would stop myself or friends because though we were White, we had long hair &/or beards, so obviously to cops, long hair = "Hippies" which = Drugs. Cops are the same jocks who used to beat on the younger/weaker students in high school, or elbowed you if they could get away with it as they walked down a crowded hall as the bell rang. Most barely graduated high school and used their connections; a father, an uncle, an older brother, a cousin, to get into the Police Academy. A relative of an ex-cop once told me her daughter, who wanted her entire life to become a Cop, finally turned in her badge after a year or less on the force. When I asked her why, she said that (this is a semi-quote) "Most of them are jerks who drink too much and cheat on their wives". It's a frat house for wannabe Alpha males who've never grown up. They start out lying in Traffic Court and then progress from there. Anything's fair play if you can get away with it, and there's not a cop in the world who will rat out his fellow cop. It's like being in the legal version of the Mafia. Honest cops don't stick around for long because lying is part of being a cop and most cops don't give a flying f-ck about the law since few of them can read. If departments hadn't made body cams mandatory, most cops would simply lie their faces on the witness stand and swear these beatings never happened. Remember, the movie "Serpico" was based on the life of a real NYC cop, and as the movie's tag line read: "His fellow officers considered him the most dangerous man alive, an honest cop". I could go on but I think you get the point. Great ending piece to a great show & told in a perceptive way that people will get & relate to. Police brutality has been going on for decades and it's time we start realizing that it's not & has never been the 1% who are "bad apples" , but the 1% who are good ones, and the 99% who will lie and beat and break the laws they've sworn to protect who're the problem.
Try getting a doctor to testify against another doctor in court. If they do then they lose everything. Other doctors won’t associate with them, they lose their hospital privileges, other doctors stop referring patients to them and their practice withers and dies. Even if they close their practice and move to another place their status as a snitch follows them. Testifying against another doctor is career suicide. For cops its even worse. You testify against or report a fellow officer and you can end up dead. You call for back up and it takes 30 minutes to arrive instead of 5 minutes if it shows at all. You try to subdue and cuff a suspect and the other cops just stand around and laugh while you get your ass beat. When I was growing up I dreamed of being a cop. I finally did become a cop, graduated 3rd in my class by 2 points and went to work at LAPD. 3 years later I’d had enough of the thin blue line shit. I left 3 months before the Rodney King beating took place. 25 years as an electrician and not once did I ever have to “report” or testify against a fellow sparky. I did however testify against a cop who went off on a suspect already in custody, and was completely helpless. The case was dropped when the officer resigned and went to work for a different department. I ended up moving to another state because I got tired of being pulled over for no reason by every cop in town. I don’t know the answer to the problem but I do know something needs to be done. Cops in this country are out of control in so many ways. Like Bill said if it’s a tiny fraction of cops doing these things why are there so many videos of “cops gone wild”.
For the record, people who were bullied in high school don't usually become police officers as revenge. They tend to be the bullies in high school. And that tends to be harder to root out, because bullies tend to be popular, have good grades, come from wealthy families, and be generally liked by teachers. They also have a role in the social order. That's why bullies tend to be very successful later in life. In contrast, people who get picked on tend to be at higher risk for mental illness, and are more likely to be the victim of a crime than actually committing them.
Unbelievable! never seen the police beating a defenseless person that severely, rock on Bill, and I love your scathingly hilarious descriptions woven into your intelligent and articulate facts about the law. BTW, here in Canada, my brother was severely beaten by two RCMP officers, with if you can believe it, full size Mag flashlights then stripped naked and tossed in the cell with 20 other men, and all for having a little piece of hash, guess thats why they say they always get their man! 😩😡
A full psych review would go a long way towards fixing this problem. The self reporting 1 page questionnaire model of screening ( that isn't even a requirement in many places) filters out the stupid, not the vicious. It is no wonder the 'Licence to Bully' lot flock into law enforcement in droves.
New Message, better training on how to deescalate a situation, control over emotional responses, thorough background checks and adequate psychological evaluation by professionals. With the resources we spend on law enforcement these added elements would be a drop in the bucket.
When my 7 year old nephew announced he wanted to be a cop when he grew up, I asked him why. He stated "so I can boss people around." Out of the mouths of babes...
Yeah Ive never been raped but have a couple of be@tings from the police under my belt. My first one I was 12 and amongst other injuries they broke my front tooth. Only reason for that one was because of where I lived. Id love to see cops being accountable for this type of behaviour #BlueToo #NightstickBlues
I knew a guy who became a cop and when I asked him why he specifically said "to crack some skulls" and I knew one who said "to try and make a positive change."
It is impossible for a cop to do anything more than draw a chalk line and take statements. Then the real police, you know the detectives not the patrolmen, find your killer. By the time the cops get there you are already dead.
8 years in the Marine Corps including combat deployments to Iraq followed by 11 years in law enforcement and I’ve never been accused of a single instance of excessive force despite being a member of a special operations group. This is the most common story though. If an officer is accused of and found guilty of excessive force then it is the most reprehensible action imaginable. That is the attitude of most law enforcement officers. We’re here to protect and serve. Period. We protect our communities. Race, ethnicity, orientation means nothing. I don’t even have a dog in the race anymore. I only do it part-time these days. My attitude and that of my fellow officers has not changed though. The vast majority are only there to help. We aren’t paid enough to be biased. Like it or not. We’d lay our lives down for $8.00/hour as quick as we would for $65.00/hour.
When I was in college taking a medical course, the first day the instructor went around the room and asked why we were taking this course. One of the guys said he changed his field of study. He was originally going into law enforcement. All the people in the classes were either the high school bullies or their victims looking to get payback. The thought of having to spend 8 hours a day in a car with these people completely turned him off.
I've started watching again the TV series "The Shield" and I realize nothing has changed - there were and there will always be bad cops, we'll write books about them, make TV series, share videos on our social media, but the problem will remain. There are so many problems to tackle at once to get to the root of this issue, that if everyone doesn't pitch in - it's going to be mission imposible. I miss the old times when you could actually hear people laughing and clapping on the show. Long live Bill - hope to see you live soon!
The problem is the procedure for hiring, because they specifically put these guys through rigorous psychological profiling to find the ones who can't think much for themselves and have never dared break the law prior to enforcing it. They want guys and gals who won't question protocols at all and will always 'go by the book' in any and every situation they're confronted with. You seriously can't have too high of an IQ if you want to be a police officer, it's literally not allowed, those guys can skip rungs on the ladder though, or become FBI agents, not cops though, gotta keep the intelligence accountability within a certain range, not too dumb and not too intelligent.
You are spot on Bill. PD from 78 to 2004. Husband to retire this year, 65y & 40 on the job. The ones you speak of exist..badge & gun..nothing with out them. Notice u don’t see a lot of women being abusive.. People don’t want to spend a lot of time on the good stuff..I support right to free speech or a knee. Keep the exposure going. Please don’t forget the good guys & gals, just doing their job.
Here's two tips for avoiding the risk of getting punched or assaulted by cops (regardless of their training or IQ): 1. Don't break the law. 2. If you're caught breaking the law, don't resist arrest in any way. It's really that simple.
hugh jorgan So, by don't break the law you mean the law interpreted by the person punching you in the face? Or according to the person filing the complaint? Disorderly conduct is against the law. It's also completely subjective. So if someone sees me, a huge black man, speaking to my wife, a small white woman, because I'm agitated, not with her, but because a customer service person was berating my daughter and I'm understandably angry, then some nosy old white woman who has no regular interaction with black people, walks by and calls the police, I have no right to defend myself as I broke no laws? I should just let the officer arrest me and waste my time because a nosy, uninformed person called them? It's not that simple. And there is no justification for what happened in any of the videos show above. You're incredibly naive or incredibly privileged, with no empathy or understanding for others.
If you ever saw one of our cop shows or an arrest made, you would see the difference, cops have been shoved, threatened with knives, pelted with bottles, spat on and still dont gun people down. Tazering, pepper spray is what you would expect, unless a gun is involved. Cops actually spend a lot of time doing negotiation skills, my brother works in highway patrol as a speed camera operator for our local police department
I'm a retired police officer and he is 100% correct
Thank you for serving
Any propositions for engaging in positive discourse with police on this issue

I would not put blind faith in Cops, just bc they’re Cops, now. Just like some other professions, being a Police Officer can and does attract “types” of ppl, who shouldn’t be in that line of work. They’re unsuitable. Police need, badly, to screen applicants for Police Academy. EXTREME VETTING. If you're a good cop and you don't protect the public from the bad cops, you're a bad cop
Sorry, I don’t consider a cop bad if he beats the fuck out of a active gang banger who thrives on the weak.
I mostly agree. Although there must also be strong pressure not to inform on your colleagues. And a strong chance that if you do, a corrupt clique will get you ostracised or fired. Which probably leads to wilful blindness.

@Roy M, This country is NOT a democracy, it's a Constitutional Republic. There is a HUGE difference. "And to the democracy, for witch it stands, one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all"? That sound right to you?
Nothing new....this shit has been going on for decades. It just happens to be that everyone has a camera now.
If most cops are good, there wouldn't be any bad cops. Because the good cops would *do something about them!*
brainflash1 Social dynamics makes that WAY harder than you think...
They've got guns, don't they? And we've seen that they have ZERO gripes with using them at the slightest provocation.
It seems to be the way they are trained, I can understand cops in America are little more twichy, since they are policing the most heavy armed nation on earth
Criss Cross
If the social dynamic is made by a majority of good cops than no it wouldn't be hard. That's the point. I had a cop tell me personally about 20 years ago you have to be an asshole to be a cop. But it's even more than that, they are not trained to serve, they are trained to be like this.
The length of time required to complete academy training averaged 21 weeks, or 840 hours, as of 2003, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
In Germany 24 to 36 months.
Mkay, cool. Also, that's from 2003, you should try finding more up to date stats (if they exist, that is)
I was in training for 10 months.
We need more like you in the world Bill

Katrina Sinclair You forget that Bill said last week that he wanted the US to fall into another recession.
Justin M when did he say that?
Stuffy McStuff Last week or the week before. Recently.

Def Misanthrope
I read an article about one cop who reported a colleague for "excessive force". Then afterwards the cop said he found a dead-rat on his car and other officers would intentionally ignore his calls for "backup" (putting his life on the line), until finally the police department regulated him to "desk duty".
That's what police departments do, they punish the "good" cops while enabling the "bad" cops.
They're pussies who don't give a fuck about us. It's them versus us. Your chances of dying increase dramatically when the Police show up!

Corps mentality.
NJ EMILY WEINMAN-SHE'S NOT A MODEL CITIZEN
This is not Weinman’s first run in with the law and not the first time she’s been combative, according to court documents. In September of 2016, she was arrested and charged with burglary, simple assault, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and recklessly endangering another person. In November of 2017, Weinman pleaded guilty to misdemeanor simple assault and misdemeanor “recklessly endangering another person.” She was sentenced to serve four years of probation and pay just under $10,000 in court costs and restitution.
below me: Still doesn't not justify excess force.
Only if you're a coward.
fight or flight instincts. the police already made a mistake by letting her walk away. police use force to be on top of a situation and to be the ones that control. once a suspect STARTS to be combative it is time to "pounce" on them to keep control. she was drinking and was going out of control. you would change your comment if she turned around and picked up a knife. they did what was right and just. think of how many times in a day the police put their own lives at risk. they aren't going to take a chance.

When health professionals coverup for a misdiagnosis they are abiding and abetting in malice if the victim is put on a death watch or dies.
Automatic termination, loss of qualified immunity and pensions, and prison time!

Because without any people there wouldn't be an america. They aren't boycotting the song btw. That's something the right has put into people's heads to make them look less patriotic. Well that got islamaphobic as shit real fast.
Because arachnophobia is a well known word in America, you think it's ok to hate someone for their religion? You realize America never made a movie called Coccinellidaephobia right? Let alone jam your hatred into threads that have nothing to do with it?
Dragon Fox - So, when challenged, you discuss the 'phobic' part of 'Islamophobic' and not the fact that, out of nowhere, you brought Muslims into the conversation? *That* is the bit that made you Islamophobic, not your knowledge of phobias, dude...
In answer to your question, though, when did Muslims start having badges or refer to those who share their religion as 'co-workers'? You literally brought them into this out of context and out of nowhere, so Dewayne's right - you're Islamophobic as shit.
This is absolutely unacceptable. Infuriating. If this is what they do in front of cameras, I hate to imagine what they can do when there's no camera.
A M Exactly!

great point, I could not agree more.
Bill is totally on point here. Awesome job. I know some great cops whom I've nothing but respect for, but I've met nasty, completely unprofessional officers as well, and when your job involves carrying a loaded weapon and wielding extraordinary power over ordinary citizens there should be no tolerance for any lack of professionalism or abuse of power, regardless of how widespread the problem is.
you're weak ! Bill is a celebrity who don't live in bad neighborhood, or even wouldn't dare to fight the bad guys or go on a ride along to see the truth ! it's easy to talk Sh** from a chair without puttin you're talk into action . Before Dick like him talk about situation they should put themselves in to action and see what teacher, coaches, law enforcement, soldiers , parents have to go through . The Guy can even be in a commitment / realationship with someone because he has no ball to handle it . read up on that !
Police shootings are enormously controversial."

Yeh, and the result is that London, which has no guns, has more crime than New York City, which does have guns. Rape murder and child molestation is becoming common place all across Europe and the police turn a blind eye to it.
So, you think that guns added into the mix would make matters better? LMFAO

The number of deaths is directly linked to rightwing politics which of course aims to help the richest the most.
Alva Goldbook not even close to being true
Here in Holland cops have to go through a psychologiacal assessment before getting the job.
Apparently US police are assessed at the END of their training, not the beginning, and all that time and money has been spent on them by then so........
I lived in the Netherlands for 3 years and can say the cops there are fantastic
@@barrywalls7175 because they smoke marijuana before their shift 😊
That's two things they are smarter about than Americans. they legalized marijuana and initiated programs fix their other drug problems many years ago. and this Country can't fix these problems still. a person would think this Country would take a hint from them.
They do in the US too.
God damn right Bill, you're god damn right
If the police (whom I firmly agree that 90% are fantastic individuals serving and protecting their communities) have nothing to hide (the bad/racist 10%) then what is their gripe about body cameras?
It also protects cops too couple weeks ago a a woman accused a cop of sexual assault bodycam footage exonerated him
Its at best 50/50 good/bad
Bill - Your right on point yet again. Exposing a serious problem in this country with humor.
Respect my authoritaa
get outa here officer barbarity
Thank you Bill Maher.
Most of these videos are blocked from being shown to jury when deciding if they need to be charged. It's like the DA and the cops have each others back
"We used to have a rampant crime problem, so we hired more cops.
Now we have a cop problem."
Harlan Ellison, circa 1960s-1970s, I think, and I'm paraphrasing.
Scorch428 at least those police were smart and strong enough to deal with actual criminals
Bill Maher is the Best!!!
The RCMP aren't angels, and they aren't analogous to local police anyway.
Damn. I feel like taking a knee right now.
You are wrong and everything you know about police is wrong.
Yes, psychological tests are standard hiring practices.
No they not
Steroid abuse is rampant in our police departments. Roid rage kills.

No, of course you don't.

By Amy Brittain & Mark Mueller/The Star-Ledger
On a rainy August morning in 2007, the news rippled through New Jersey’s law enforcement ranks, officer to officer, department to department.
"Did Dr. Colao die?"
Kolich didn’t suspect foul play, but he found it odd - and a little disturbing - that so many officers were interested in the fate of a man with no official ties to any police agency.
I admire you and your work! Respect
Bill Maher is always funny and clever.
He really gets the police issues in this two year old clip.
He said similar things also in this interview with Stephen Colbert from 4 years ago: ua-cam.com/video/pXvVnvQOMQ0/v-deo.html
I do think that most police officers are "good cops", but they're not the problem, the problem is the bad ones.
those issues haven't changed since Maher's days of selling drugs as a college student
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is the BEST NEW RULE EVER!
time to watch this again
I hope all football players stay in the locker rooms next football season to make a statement during the national anthem and I'm a veteran
As a fellow veteran myself, I absolutely agree.
While the kneeling is somewhat disrespectful to the anthem, it is a completely peaceful act of protest to an epidemic of police brutality and lack of accountability.
kaepernick got the idea to kneal from a vetern because it's more respectful than sitting down on the bench
They were welcome, they just didn't want to go
I get why they didn't want to go, but saying they weren't welcome is just wrong
none of the eagles players knelt during the year, what shit would trump say about them?
Power imbalance, indeed.
"Do police attract bullies, like priesthood attract paedophiles?"
"Remember, you're a cop, not a flight attendant!"
Priesthood don't attract paedophiles, Bill should mind his language sometimes.
Bullies don't become cops. People who want to protect themselves become cops.
Very relevant now
I have the same comment about cops as as I do republicans, just saying you're not the same bad person that your party and president is while doing nothing about it, you're just as complicit for being an enabler. This supposed bigger group of ppl need to do something about the few bad apples that's poisoning the rest of the water.
+iiiekl3 Like Republicans, they'll say something - just before it's time to retire.
Great message! All our police act like professionals, but too many are allowed to act worst than professional criminals.
Thank GOD for Bill Maher. Helps me cope.
It always bothers me that in these videos of police brutality, you never see even one of the cops trying to stop it.

So? How is this ilegal in the land of freedom?
He was making a joke, on a scale of 1-10 in crime severity, a open alcohol container is like a .5.
"Land of Freedom" my holy ass: America has and has always had some of the most restrictive laws on alcohol on the planet, even some Muslim countries are more relaxed than that and I'm not even kidding.
While having alcohol is public is illegal, it's not generally an arrestable offense. You get a ticket.

When I asked her why, she said that
(this is a semi-quote) "Most of them are jerks who drink too much and cheat on their wives".
Like Bill said if it’s a tiny fraction of cops doing these things why are there so many videos of “cops gone wild”.
dave johnson Go ahead and call a cop a coward until someone breaks into your house

Thank god for Bill Maher
Need to bring this up again Bill.
THIS IS BILL MAHER AT HIS BEST.
Amen Bill Amen
Suddenly this is relevant again... America have more than just one Pandemia
I'm generally very conservative and I love Bill Maher. Keep speaking sense brother!
I love these moments when Bill gets real. It shows he really cares.
Go Bill
Violence is inappropriate & wrong. Take a knee
Thanks Bill.
Eye opening.
"they do a river dance on your skull" hahahha nice one

Yeah Ive never been raped but have a couple of be@tings from the police under my belt. My first one I was 12 and amongst other injuries they broke my front tooth. It is impossible for a cop to do anything more than draw a chalk line and take statements. Then the real police, you know the detectives not the patrolmen, find your killer. By the time the cops get there you are already dead.
You do realize two of the most famous serial killers are from Wisconsin, right?
Milwaukee is in the top 5% for most dangerous cities in the US as of 2016 according to my 30 second google search.
4:04 this really struck a chord with me as someone who grew up in the burbs.
This is America
Yep. This is indeed a country known as the United States of America, which is named such because of the name of the continent we live on, America.
Here's two tips for avoiding the risk of getting punched or assaulted by cops (regardless of their training or IQ):
1. Don't break the law.
2. If you're caught breaking the law, don't resist arrest in any way.
It's really that simple.
I found the guy that was "too" smart to be a cop. Hahaha you guys must have a club.
hugh jorgan So, by don't break the law you mean the law interpreted by the person punching you in the face?
Smarts and intelligence are two completely different things, Einstein.
Bravo bill like always you say it like it is
Im grateful our New Zealand cops dont pull this crap, you just dont see this on the news here.
Where in New Zealand do you live bro? I'm from Wellington
