When I visited the US, I was amazed by how many cars were damaged, had loose bumpers, or had non-functioning lights. That wouldn't fly AT ALL here in Europe.
Half of them have blacked out windshields, completely misaligned, way too bright headlights, old, cracked and bold tires, leaking exhaust, if not completely fucked up because they think it's cool, broken windshields, 3 feet lifts, grinding brakes, knocking engines, etc. Hell, the further up North you are the worse it gets, I've seen rusted through frames and the car folding on every pothole, sparks flying 😂 it's all death traps and on top of that they hand licences out like candy so 2/3 of the people either don't know rules, can't drive or don't give a shit. Got pulled over in Texas by a State Trooper who had been following me for over 5 miles on Highway 10. The reason he pulled me over? I was "weaving within the lane" Not outside the lane, crossing over the lines, but WITHIN the lane. If they want to find something, and can't, they can and will make stuff up.
I won't doubt that it was a bullshit stop since I don't know you (and police being police), but legit weaving within the lane is a sign of impaired driving.

He threatened me by saying he was going to search my car "and find what I was hiding," I just lit another cigarette and told him to do whatever he wants, I just wanna get to work. He looked through my car for like 30 seconds and gave me a warning and I left and ended up being late for work. I'm white but if I had to deal with that all the time, I would for sure be annoyed with driving, AT THE LEAST. Honestly, lucky I didn't get arrested or worse.

Traffic violations shouldn't be how we are arresting felons. Traffic stops should be exclusive to traffic violations. There are thousands of drivers who weave through traffic, ignore every posted speed limit, drive without seatbelts etc. Police should do their job and actually investigate criminals instead of just hoping to "fish" them out of traffic.

I never felt my privilege so thoroughly as when a Columbus police officer pulled me over for the license plate light being burned out. The officer started aggressively questioning me about why a guy from Kansas was in Ohio at all. Later, he threatened to hold me until drug sniffing dogs arrived. Then, when I didn't argue, the cop just sighed, relaxed, and started flatly admitting what was going on. He said was pulling over literally everyone who stayed at that hotel, that he lied about my light being burned out, that police regularly use that light as an excuse to pull people over to look for drug runners since no one checks that light regularly. Just casually starts chatting about how he and "every officer" routinely violate civil rights to try and find drug runners as though I wasn't one of the people he was violating the rights of butbwas instead in on the secret.

It is different. Here in Germany you aren't stopped as often, but there are quite some speeding controls. That's it. In my 20 years of driving here I have been stopped once on the Autobahn for a routine control. I have been driving in the US about 4 weeks (on visits to my family) and been stopped twice in that time. So yeah, I think it's different. Just talking about the topic of this episode of course, but it is very different here across the board.
I think most police institutions around the globe have similar issues. Psychotic people simply are drawn to jobs with authority and access to weapons. But the extent of the issues is very different! Take police killings: In the US police killed 33 out of 10 million people in 2022. Compare that to 13.7 killings per 10 million in the netherlands, 0 in Denmark and Croatia or 4.3 and 5.5 in Belgium and France in 2021. So yes, I would call it wildly different, but of course we also have some issues. But compared to you some of our problems appear like first world luxury problems😅
Another thing I almost forgot is that a lot of minor traffic violations related to the car are very rare here, so it doesn't even give the police an opportunity to pull you over. Most european countries have mandatory car safety inspections every other year, so defective and dangerous cars are really rare to see.
The weirdest part about US traffic stops are those DUI tests. They take forever, make the driver (drunk or not) look like a fool and could be done with a breathalyzer in a minute with more accurate results.
You probably just suck at driving so you are nervous. I don’t think women are inherently bad drivers, but aren’t expected to be as much as men are. Now I will tell you.. I used to be a really bad driver. I once had to write a twenty thousand word report on how to properly ground guide a vehicle for it being over the lines. Even with all the pressures and expectations of being a man or a soldier and being shamed when not meeting the standards couldn’t make me a good driver. Now twenty years wiser, my driving skills are to a point where I can only really appreciate when I do see another driver as competent as myself on the road.
That anxiety you feel, we all feel, make them feel powerful. You're in their hands. That ego bump is one of the main reasons people love wearing uniforms.
As a European, I don't see the big deal with police being able to conduct a traffic stop for almost anything. In most of Europe, police are allowed to do random traffic stops to check if both you and your vehicle are good to drive to ensure public safety. Then again, our cops don't shoot you for no reason during a routine traffic stop.
So I have a super messed up emotional response to certain stressful situations. Meaning I cry in reaction to strong emotions. Every time I’ve been pulled over, I’m in tears. Officers want to get away from me as fast as possible. The only time my messed up psychological problems are an asset.

I would still argue that broken headlights/taillights are a safety issue, but it shouldn't be a finable stop. The most that interaction should be the cop pulls them over, alerts them to broken light, tells them to get it fixed, and then be on their way. Nothing more.
It's insane getting pulled over for not wearing your seatbelt. I understand if your passengers are not wearing a seatbelt, but do we have to pretend the cop cares for my safety?
I've been pulled over multiple times for a clear license plate cover that you can pick up at any local car parts store. My problem with this "code" is that if you drive around our local courthouse, almlst every employee there has one, and most of them are tinted. I shouldn't have to wash my registration sticker off my plate at the car wash while everybody else get to cover their's up. Its petty af🙄
Sometimes police let you go with a “warning”. Depending on the police department, this warning remains on your police record, which future police officers can see the next time they pull you over. The problem is that with a “warning”, you don’t get a court date to plead your case. You might be totally innocent, but your record shows that you have a bunch of violations, and the police officer might treat you accordingly.
If someone has a taillight out, you should tell them. It should be at most a 1-minute interaction. And instead of a fix-it-ticket, just hand them a post it note or something.
I have several comments here. The first here is a quick side note about not pulling people over for loud exhaust (as one public official promoted). Loud exhaust is a huge health hazard that we ignore as a society. I primarily commute via bicycle, and people with unbelievably loud exhaust constant zoom past me and leave my ears ringing. You cannot live anywhere anymore without cars ripping by at all hours - disrupting sleep. It’s hard to find any kind of nature because you can hear these cars miles away. Health experts have long been ringing the alarm about the associated heart and stress levels that these cars are causing - all because some bro wants to draw attention to himself. Onto the main topic, we should be using more technology. With red light cameras and speed cameras, we can use technology to catch dangerous drivers. Police shouldn’t have to do this. I’ve lived all around the country and have been to all 50 states. The place I’ve lived the past 8.5 years (Phoenix) has, by far, the most aggressive drivers I’ve ever seen. The speed limit on most of our stroads (Camelback, the 7s, Scottsdale Rd., Hayden, etc. etc.) is around 45mph. You constantly see people doing at least 65 - swerving in and out of traffic, tailgating, etc. When I used to commute via car, I’d see accidents daily. Having moved here from a state where police give tickets as a hobby and, therefore, people don’t drive that way, seeing accidents daily doesn’t have to be normal. It’s a thing in Phoenix because police do not give tickets and there are absolutely no consequences to reckless driving. We should be giving far more tickets out, but it should be done with technology. Remove police from it. Red light cameras, speed cameras, and even noise cameras (some places have used them to catch people with loud exhaust) exist, and so police shouldn’t have to deal with ticketing for those things, and it would solve a lot of these issues.
Next time they pull you over, ask them this: 1) As an officer of the law, shouldn't you _know_ the law? 2) Are you violating my rights intentionally or due to incompetence? (It's one or the other, isn't it?)
My only question is: why didn't that officer stop and write the tickets for the violations in the videos? You just watched an ineffective officer waste your money.

My stepdad was a cop who along with others embezzled money. However, he was the only one arrested when an outside investigation started. They used him as a scapegoat. He and them were wrong for what they did. Many years later everyone who pointed the finger at him, were also arrested. I do not trust police! When they ask why such a negative view on the police, it's everything that gives the negative view.

traffic stops just mostly aren't a thing at all in europe. we have speed traps that take pictures if you speed. we have parking cops. sometimes we have road stops at night if they're looking for someone specific or at night outside clubs or festivals looking for drunk drivers. they also don't carry guns.
It just seems like a great system where people with partially run down cars also get to pay exorbitant fines, probably because they were rich to begin with. Poor people probably drive all the pristine cars right?

It is different. Here in Germany you aren't stopped as often, but there are quite some speeding controls. That's it. In my 20 years of driving here I have been stopped once on the Autobahn for a routine control. I have been driving in the US about 4 weeks (on visits to my family) and been stopped twice in that time. So yeah, I think it's different. Just talking about the topic of this episode of course, but it is very different here across the board.

I think most police institutions around the globe have similar issues. Psychotic people simply are drawn to jobs with authority and access to weapons. But the extent of the issues is very different! Take police killings: In the US police killed 33 out of 10 million people in 2022. Compare that to 13.7 killings per 10 million in the netherlands, 0 in Denmark and Croatia or 4.3 and 5.5 in Belgium and France in 2021. So yes, I would call it wildly different, but of course we also have some issues. But compared to you some of our problems appear like first world luxury problems😅

Another thing I almost forgot is that a lot of minor traffic violations related to the car are very rare here, so it doesn't even give the police an opportunity to pull you over. Most european countries have mandatory car safety inspections every other year, so defective and dangerous cars are really rare to see.
The weirdest part about US traffic stops are those DUI tests. They take forever, make the driver (drunk or not) look like a fool and could be done with a breathalyzer in a minute with
more accurate results.

Now I will tell you.. I used to be a really bad driver. I once had to write a twenty thousand word report on how to properly ground guide a vehicle for it being over the lines.
Even with all the pressures and expectations of being a man or a soldier and being shamed when not meeting the standards couldn’t make me a good driver.
Now twenty years wiser, my driving skills are to a point where I can only really appreciate when I do see another driver as competent as myself on the road.

As a European, I don't see the big deal with police being able to conduct a traffic stop for almost anything. In most of Europe, police are allowed to do random traffic stops to check if both you and your vehicle are good to drive to ensure public safety.
Then again, our cops don't shoot you for no reason during a routine traffic stop.

Here’s a fun fact. My HOA has decided that if you drive over the limit, they have the right to pull you over and put you in handcuffs. Specifically emphasizing that they can put you in handcuffs. If you go 30 mph. In a neighborhood where there are sometimes half miles with no houses.
I would still argue that broken headlights/taillights are a safety issue, but it shouldn't be a finable stop. The most that interaction should be the cop pulls them over, alerts them to broken light, tells them to get it fixed, and then be on their way. Nothing more.
Except they can't be trusted to do so. Can just simply mail a citation, no need for interaction.

I've been pulled over multiple times for a clear license plate cover that you can pick up at any local car parts store. My problem with this "code" is that if you drive around our local courthouse, almlst every employee there has one, and most of them are tinted. I shouldn't have to wash my registration sticker off my plate at the car wash while everybody else get to cover their's up. Its petty af🙄
Sometimes police let you go with a “warning”. Depending on the police department, this warning remains on your police record, which future police officers can see the next time they pull you over. The problem is that with a “warning”, you don’t get a court date to plead your case. You might be totally innocent, but your record shows that you have a bunch of violations, and the police officer might treat you accordingly.
It's sad that I couldn't tell if this was a fresh episode or a very very old one. Overpolicing people of color is a perennial problem.

If someone has a taillight out, you should tell them. It should be at most a 1-minute interaction. And instead of a fix-it-ticket, just hand them a post it note or something.
I have several comments here. The first here is a quick side note about not pulling people over for loud exhaust (as one public official promoted). Loud exhaust is a huge health hazard that we ignore as a society. I primarily commute via bicycle, and people with unbelievably loud exhaust constant zoom past me and leave my ears ringing. You cannot live anywhere anymore without cars ripping by at all hours - disrupting sleep. It’s hard to find any kind of nature because you can hear these cars miles away. Health experts have long been ringing the alarm about the associated heart and stress levels that these cars are causing - all because some bro wants to draw attention to himself.
Onto the main topic, we should be using more technology. With red light cameras and speed cameras, we can use technology to catch dangerous drivers. Police shouldn’t have to do this. I’ve lived all around the country and have been to all 50 states. The place I’ve lived the past 8.5 years (Phoenix) has, by far, the most aggressive drivers I’ve ever seen. The speed limit on most of our stroads (Camelback, the 7s, Scottsdale Rd., Hayden, etc. etc.) is around 45mph. You constantly see people doing at least 65 - swerving in and out of traffic, tailgating, etc. When I used to commute via car, I’d see accidents daily. Having moved here from a state where police give tickets as a hobby and, therefore, people don’t drive that way, seeing accidents daily doesn’t have to be normal. It’s a thing in Phoenix because police do not give tickets and there are absolutely no consequences to reckless driving. We should be giving far more tickets out, but it should be done with technology. Remove police from it. Red light cameras, speed cameras, and even noise cameras (some places have used them to catch people with loud exhaust) exist, and so police shouldn’t have to deal with ticketing for those things, and it would solve a lot of these issues.
Next time they pull you over, ask them this:
1) As an officer of the law, shouldn't you _know_ the law?
2) Are you violating my rights intentionally or due to incompetence?
(It's one or the other, isn't it?)
My only question is: why didn't that officer stop and write the tickets for the violations in the videos?

Yes, I get tailgated by police all the time. Especially if it's late at night. It feels like they're trying to intimidate me into a traffic violation. Tailgating is illegal and I suffer from migraines. I don't need headlights in my mirrors for miles on end. Read my plate, if I'm not wanted or actively committing a crime, back off or pass me. Dicks.

Like that kid wasn’t just being asked a few questions. He was being literally interrogated and that cop was obviously fishing for him to say something incriminating and not wanting to let the kid go until he heard something to justify his bias. That’s disgusting. That was a fkn child.
My stepdad was a cop who along with others embezzled money. However, he was the only one arrested when an outside investigation started. They used him as a scapegoat. He and them were wrong for what they did. Many years later everyone who pointed the finger at him, were also arrested. I do not trust police! When they ask why such a negative view on the police, it's everything that gives the negative view.

All im saying, personally, is that i resonate with alot of these stories. Im living them right now, i have been for nearly a deacde. These minor tickets and my inability to pay and the damned inflexibility kf these evil cops and judges has ruined my life. I didnt have the money to repair my car for inspection, got a ticket, and its been hell ever since. I begged the judge for indigent claim but he said i would basically need to be homeless for that to happen. Needless to say, ACAB 1000%
traffic stops just mostly aren't a thing at all in europe. we have speed traps that take pictures if you speed.
we have parking cops. sometimes we have road stops at night if they're looking for someone specific or at night outside clubs or festivals looking for drunk drivers. they also don't carry guns.
