I was in 5th grade before I figured out how to writed "z" in the correct direction. I finally figured it out when I remembered that Zoro would underline his name with the bottom of the z . LOL I know that kind of shows my age...I'm also talking about the black & white Zoro tv show, not the movie...my dad loved the so so I'm old but not old enough to have seen the original Zoro as it came out. LOL

I used AAR with my oldest and have many friends that did as well. Level 1 took the longest of all levels. Each level went a little bit faster for all of us. We just need to remember, that it is a very new concept for the young brains. English is a weird language for us adults, and I can only image for those just leaning it and trying to read it.
Also another thing that really helped is once DS started to read, we got the Level 1 readers from Bookshark. They had a few levels that had books that progressed in a nice way for young readers just starting out. And it was so nice that you could buy the package and I had all the books needed, without having to try and find/buy them. I think we did this for the first 3 level readers they had and it was so helpful in building the confidence in reading.

If you do switch next year, we have loved Abeka phonics just as much as AAR. But with that said, I agree with you about consistency. With my third (who is exceptionally bright and eager to read) it took so much longer to get her there because of my being inconsistent and switching back and forth between Abeka and AAR. It sounds like you’re doing great and I’ve seen plenty of families use level 1 with first grade too. I love that you’ve taken a lot of that pressure off your daughter and yourself.

I do like 2-3 5-7min sessions of reading 7 days a week. I separate the green cards and do like 10 in morning time, the lessons, then a quick book team reading at bed. I've seen so much more improvement in doing several short sessions in a day then trying for 20 min reading lessons.
You're doing so well with your girls! Thanks for all the tips

TG&TB is very great for helping your kiddos to read. I did that with my youngest and she is 7 now and we are on level 3 TG&TB and she started with their Pre-k level and she reads great. Bob books also have 3 workbooks that go with their readers to help your child to read.

I just want to say I really and truly appreciate seeing your videos. My 3 yr old has a speech delay like your middle daughter does and I was nervous about homeschooling him through preschool and hopefully through the later years. I started with him when he was 1 1/2 - 2 and got him early intervention services. He went from not really talking to now talking in full blown sentences.
I love seeing your videos and just knowing that it’s okay if you don’t get everything you planned done and it’s alright to change curriculums.
I appreciate you so much ❤

I had one struggle with All About Reading and I switched to Logic of English and it was a fantastic fit for her. I actually prefer Logic of English! It is so FUN for student and teacher. :)
Another thing you could try....just stop AAR for a bit. Only do Explode the Code and let her mature a bit more and then pick back up with AAR. You might be surprised what a little time can do!

My son is in 1st grade and started AAR 1 last year. I noticed that in level 1, the review sheets are very long - 2-3 pages - and my son can only take about 10 minutes of those. While he can finish reading a story lesson in 1 day, I do not push him to do more than 10 minutes of the practice sheets on any given day. He just began AAR 2 in November, so it took over 1 school year to complete level 1, but we are going at his pace, he is interested in reading and doesn’t hate it, and he is making progress, so I am happy.

You are a great mom-teacher! I used to be a Kindergarten teacher, now homeschool mom. You are giving her so much more than a public school ever could! Plus you get to see her grow up and be the one to see those little light bulb moments.❤
Question for you with All About Reading…does she already know all her letter sounds? That is key to starting Level 1 in my opinion. Practice a lot of blending three sounds verbally. Ex. Say “/c/ /a/ /t/“ and wait til she say /cat/. Do lots of practice with that first.

I love that part of teaching my kiddos when they where learning for the first time. Trust me you will wish for those days again when they get older. I told my daughters the other day I wish I could get those days back. My daughters are 11, 10 & 7 and those are some of the most amazing parts because all your kids seem to learn differently. Don't give up at all because you and only you now what is best for your child. Good luck.

I’m in the same situation as you and it is daunting. when you have a speech delay child and they need that extra steps and you feel that just because you don’t have that education or the license we just feel like we’re not good enough, but what I came to realize is we are good enough, and we are our children best teacher. we can slow down at their pace we can take their time, we can focus on their struggles and work through it together in a fun and exciting way and not make it like it’s a “ school “ or a “ chore” And long we do our speech with our speech pathologist three times a week and then we do what we have to do at home along with adding school to the mix, we can achieve a lot and we can see where our child is academically right in front of us. It is a good thing that we are doing this and I know that it’s tough but just know that you can do this. You got it and it will be all right!!
we are in kindergarten level this year my girl is 5 and even though her speech as expanded so well I am still going to just use the pre reading level program from all abut reading. language arts I’ll just add that in first grade only because this year I really want to focus more on reading and 3- 5 letter spelling words. Along with how to properly say letter sounds. I came to terms that reading and LA is always going to be a slow and steady pace for my child bc she had that speech delay but since her speech has came so far now we are just working on sounds blending to properly pronounce it. I am just so proud of her and how far she has came. It’s so awesome to experience and I’m actually super happy that I ended up sticking to the homeschool and doing this with my child. We’re both are growing together and it’s a fun experience to be able to do this! I did go down so many rabbit holes of different curriculum trying to find the best one but in all reality, there’s no best one. It’s just which one is a better fit and then if I have to tweak it for our needs, then that is what I have to do. There definitely isn’t a better curriculum.. lol . Wish there was so we can all save momey lol but we make it work with that we pick and choose and it’s ok!
We do a lot of reading in our home and lots of fun hands on activities to go with what we are learning especially for sight words, cvc words ect to help and make it fun and not make it seem like we are always learning.
So this year I think we will just do math with bju ( I do love math with confidence bc the checkpoints ) but Bju also has assessments and even tests if u want to “test “ as well as u can use the other page as “ independent work” book work and bju has front a back to work sheets and she did like MWC but was to short lol. But then horizons was to fast paced And math u see alpha was jsut boring lol. So we are trying bju math 1 I think she will love it more!! Then all about reading program for reading along with apologia for science :) and master book with history(: next year I’ll add in La by using sonlight.

We’ve done the other levels of MWC and the rigor becomes on par with other math curriculums that we’ve used as well. I feel like it really picks up in second grade. Keep trucking. We also love apologia math!

You’re doing so great and your videos are so encouraging! I’m currently homeschooling my 4 year old in preschool planning his kindergarten year, he is thriving! But similar to you my almost 2 year old isn’t talking at all and I’m worried about how that will set her back. My oldest was an early talker so this is new territory 😅 in a few weeks we’re meeting with the pediatrician to talk about speech therapy options for her. Would love any tips you have on how to navigate your child going from not talking to teaching her in your homeschool! ❤

We loved LOE! Like to the point that my kid who hates anything school asked to do it every day (even on the weekends) and cried when we were done with it. Because of his enthusiasm for it that I would comment about on Facebook, they contacted me and had him be part of the marketing advertisements (we sent in pictures of him and wrote our testimony for them to use for it). That being said, he had already taught himself to read at age 3, so I actually don’t know how it does to learn to read. I see how it works and why it would teach that, but don’t have experience with teaching to read from the beginning. We mostly did it to teach some phonics/spelling officially since he taught himself to read and had no formal phonics instruction. It is definitely phenomenal for spelling and a super fun curriculum (don’t skip the games, I believe they are what help the kids retain.) But my son is a pretty good speller and reader and I think LOE definitely played a major role in that. I don’t think you will be disappointed. I think the reading part would really take off in foundations B vs the first book. For us, we skipped a lot of foundations A and I went through what he didn’t know (like that y has 4 sounds or how sounds are voiced or unvoiced or things like that) and he did A and B both his second half of kindergarten. (Tip-she has free videos to do the spelling analysis in the last three books vs. doing it from the script in the book-which was waaaayyy better and my son liked when she did it vs. me doing it). Previously he had done Horizons but hated all the writing. That being said, you have girls, who are more workbook prone than boys are so they may enjoy Abeka. All that to say, we loved LOE and will be using it for my second son next year in his kindergarten year.

We're using AAR level 1 also. We just completed lesson 7. Today we used a worksheet and a CVC book from the bonus materials (lesson 10) available in Reading Eggs. I thought not having to write would make reading less of a chore but it has made it easier for my grand to avoid engaging. He's guessing instead of reading. Writing the words, on the worksheet, required his full engagement.

For my son phonics instruction every day made a huge difference and when I fell off it was like a night and day so I plan to pick that up again it’s something about breaking up into tiny pieces and blending every day which increases fluency

I do AAR with my 2nd and K kiddos and love it. It was recommended by multiple reading specialist/teachers to use the Orton Gillingham method (which AAR is). I also use Explode the Code & the red Primer math book. I’ll have to check out the other math book you had as it seems we gravitate toward similar curriculum. Thanks for sharing your video; it was very helpful.

Hey! Love your channel, have been watching awhile but this is my first time commenting. I'm a speech therapist who primarily taught literacy skills to students with speech delays. One curriculum you might consider would be Recipe for Reading which I used in conjunction with Secret Stories and the Orton Gillingham 3 part drill, it was really great combination for my learners!

Hi I love your videos. My oldest currently uses MWC and we have enjoyed it. But I find it a little busy with all the games and supplies, so I do shorten some of the games and review that he knows well. But I also feel like the lessons/units move a little quick. How do you feel it compares to MUS? We’re 2/3 of the way done with MWC-K and trying to figure out if to continue with MWC-1 or try out a mastery program like MUS.

    • @thethriceblessednest7165

I’m going to jump in and say that I have used MWC with one child for kindergarten-2nd grade and while kindergarten seems to move quickly through concepts it is because it is meant to be an introduction! The next levels re-touch on all of it at a more advanced level each time. The progression is perfectly paced for my kiddos! I’m using kindergarten a 2nd time now and it’s easier to see the reasoning behind each lesson now that I’ve done multiple other levels. Stick with it! It is so so good!

My kiddo has ASD, for kindergarten we are doing the AAR pre reading and while she is ahead in some ways, I knew I didn’t want to move too fast. Maybe (if possible) go back to AAR pre pressing to review and solidify some of those concepts and then try the level 1 again. :)

I have so many comment! I should make a video comparing LOE, Abeka, and AAR since I now have experience with all three. Science Mama does have one out already though. I’d also look into pinwheels as a fourth option. They have speech language pathologists on their team so that curriculum is most geared toward students with learning differences.
I will say that LOE foundations A is a great complement or even precursor to AAR level 1. It’s like between AAR prereading and AAR L1. It breaks things down more than level 1 but the reading scope is only CVC words. A big complaint about LOE is that it lacks enough reading practice and I completely agree with that, even for my very advanced learner. Using LOE, he just doesn’t get much reading practice every lesson day, which I think is important for all early element students if they’re struggling or not. But LOE is more fun and varied and teaches more than just reading, so it’s been worth it for use… I’ll leave a different comment for math…
