  • This is a Vintage top of the line Sony Cassette Deck made in 1974. It was one of the last decks in Sony's lineup to be designed in the horizontal format where newer decks had vertical designs and could be stacked in a rack with all the other components such as an amplifier and tuner.
This deck is built like a tank with a top quality dual capstan transport , ferrite and ferrite heads (very hard and long lasting but incompatible with Metal type cassettes), Dolby Noise Reduction, Peak Level Meters and Normal / Ferri-Chrome / Chrome type tape support. All the buttons and knobs are metal with the top section in brushed aluminium.
You can see the sticker in the front pointing to the Azimuth adjustment wheel that was used to control the alignment of the record head relative to the playback head, to make sure that the user obtained the best possible recording for the tape used. There was an indicator light that helped with this process. Nakamichi was made famous for this feature as well as their later decks had a computer controlled version of the same thing.
For those interested, you can download the tracks from the Demonstration Cassette here :- www.dropbox.co....

I can assure you this is no fake. The mechanical sounds were captured by the microphone on the video camera while the audio was captured via the RCA output from the back of the deck to my Sony PCM-D1 (recorded at 96 kHz / 24 bit). I had to time align the video and audio in iMovie which I suppose wasn't perfect enough. I do this with all my Videos so as to give a true representation of the audio quality. There's no point capturing the sound from the speakers with a Microphone as this won't do the deck any justice. The cable on the bottom right of the video is the audio cable to the PCM-D1 and the other one at the back is the power cable. I suppose it would have been useful to pan around and show people how this was being done. One more thing, the second song on the demo cassette isn't available for download anywhere on the web and this is a true copy.

I had no idea that there were decks sounding this good back in 1974. Wow! This is what tapes were supposed to sound, basically.

These tracks were recorded using my Sony PCM-D1 Digital Recorder at 96Khz / 24Bit, they're encoded in Apple Lossless format so you may need iTunes to play them back. You will hear some hiss on the recordings as these older tapes didn't use Dolby but were at least in Stereo. The tape is also played back in "Normal" position (the most basic and low quality of tape formulas). Sound is pretty good considering the 40 + odd years old for the tape.

I sold this machine in a HiFi outlet in 1974 - the year it was made, and had
to wait a few years before owning one due to cost. Better than a Nak.
I've had several and still have 3 of them. Can't be touched by much yet
the Aiwa AD6700 is close. Thanks for the upload - and by the way, Naks
never did do what reputation reputed - very good yes, but there were
    better.

I have a vintage (1971) top of the line Sony Stereo Cassette-Corder FM Stereo / AM CF-610. It's been stored for 35 years but now the cassette player does not work. I'd like to get it repaired. Any ideas?

    • @gregorybotha
      @gregorybotha  3 роки тому +1

The most common failures with cassette decks are the rubber belts and rubber pulley wheels. The wheels can be cleaned using isopropyl alcohol, available from most pharmacies. Rubber belt kits are usually available from eBay. It’ll just need some mechanical cleaning and new belts. The older decks seem to respond well to this treatment unless there are any other worn out parts. There can also be issues with the electrolytic capacitors that can dry out with age, causing the sound to be low, distorted or one or other channel to not work. These issues are less common. Mechanical switches will also more than likely need cleaning with something like Caig DeoxIT. Best of luck.

Thanks. I use a Sony PCM-D1 Digital Recorder at 96khz / 24 bit to capture the output from the deck. I was pleasantly surprised at how good this decks sounds considering that it was made in 1974, where I thought cassette tapes were still lagging way behind reel to reel machines. A highend deck for sure despite looking rather "basic". It was Sony's most expensive deck at the time, ahead of the TC-K8B which is highly regarded.

This was THE deck I lusted after in the late 1970's, even over the Nak DT600, although the Pioneer CT9191 came pretty close to the top of my wish list. I remember back in the Summer of 1978 I was in a London HiFi shop (KJ Leisure Sound) buying the best deck I could afford (the top of the line Aiwa AD1800, which oddly enough was only 2-headed)-and during the transaction some customer without scruples grabbed the demo 177SD and walked out of the store. I guess it wasn't just me that shared a strong desire for one of these.....
But the real renaissance on cassette decks came in the early 1990s, just before recordable CDs hit the market. I managed to get a three headed Aiwa 900S that through a $80,000 system sounded pretty indistinguishable from a very high end source. But you will never beat the look of analog meters, or the clunky sounds of mechanical relays being pressed.

  • @JamesE707

Awesome deck, I drooled over this in the late 1970s.

Incredible. Most of this is due to Sony's early adoption of MOSFET circuitry, Dolby B and CrO2 tape (Chromium Dioxide) and closed loop, dual capstan tape transport system.
I had a much older TC-160 with MOSFETs, no Dolby, but with closed loop / dual capstan, and MOSFET low noise transistors (pre-amp & playback stages). Whenever I used Maxell Type II tape, it sounded pretty damned good.
Then it hit me: Since this deck didn't have Dolby, why not speed up the tape transport, and then use something like dbx (compander)? So I did. So I sped up the transport by a factor of 4.3x . I didn't use dbx. i built an SWTP compander for it. Results were remarkable (none of this is believed to this day), this deck rivaled the Revox A77 reel to reel deck at 7.5 ips.
True story. This was a Sony TC-160, from 1971. With all of these mods, i had to roll off the EQ ...pots for each channel on the TC-160 circuit board (right under the volume slider pots).
Downside was, of course, i burned through tape heads at 4 times the rate, but it was worth it.
The frequency response of my modified Sony TC-160 using Maxell tape was 25Hz - 21 KHz, and THD was .1% at 1 db, wow & flutter remained the same, at .1%.
With the SWTP Compander, Signal/Noise ratio - dynamic range typically was around 105 db. By the time i was done, my ancient 1971 vintage Sony TC-160 cassette deck rivaled the best that Revox, Teac and Nakamichi could offer, by 1973. Only problem was, my deck burned through cassettes and erase and playback/record heads out about 6 times faster. Which is why I stocked up on these OEM Sony heads. I bought 4 of them. Back around 1981, my ancient TC-160 cassette deck would make my snobby audiophile friends' jaws drop (in a good way), when they heard it.
