  • Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon, affectionately known as "The Minions", were an Indonesian men's doubles pair who burst onto the scene in 2015, making an immediate splash, and then went on to not just dominate the men's doubles landscape winning many, many titles, but they also changed how it was played...likely forever!
    With Marcus Fernaldi Gideon announcing his retirement on his 33rd birthday it drew a line under any possibility of a Minions return. Surely a sad day for their fans and Indonesian badminton.
    Because of this I just had to make a video all about their career.
    In this video I lay out their entire career, from how they became a pair in the first place, to how they dominated, what was it they changed in men's doubles forever, and maybe most pressing of all, how they got the Minions nickname.
    A huge thank you goes out to my wife as well, as she was the one who helped me with creating the Indonesian subtitles. I hope all my Indonesian fans appreciate this extra little touch.
    If you do then please like, share and comment, letting my wife know her hard work is appreciated.
    Thumbnail credit goes to @xi40tong (IG) - another banger from him.
    Enjoy the video everyone.

    I really hope everyone enjoys this video on this electrifying pair, a pair who won a lot and changed men's doubles.
    And I hope all my Indonesian subscribers and viewers of this video appreciate the subtitles. They were only possible with the help of my amazing wife so if you have the time, and want to, then please like the video and show your appreciation for her in the comments below.
    I am, however, aware that those who rely on the subtitles may not understand what I'm writing here in this comment so I'll leave it here and just hope you enjoy the video 🙌🏻

    Sometimes we have to understand that not all stories end well.
    There is no Kevin without Marcus and Vice Versa. GillClark said "Sukamuljo doesn't need racket, he just need Gideon".
    To me, one without the other will not reach this amazing achievement.
    Yeah, that's sad ending but whatever happens to the minions, I feel lucky to have seen their era of dominance.
    their fast-playing style evolved men’s doubles game to a new level.
    Despite losing some tournaments, they were also champions more often than not and made us proud.
    Longest #1 World Ranking in Mens Double History, Most title in a year, etc. That's Amazing!
    Happy Retirement, Sinyo! Thank You Kevin and Marcus!

      For me it implies that Gideon was such an unsung hero. Everyone is like: Kevin..Kevin..and so on. And now for such relative produictive age, Kevin wont do much. But still Minions was a pinnacle of Badminton MD. The good old days.

    I'm from the Philippines and badminton is slowly emerging as a popular sport in my country. The minions to us was a legend...I also had a hard time accepting the bitter truth about the sad ending of their story...But when you said that the brightest star has the shortest life, I realized the fact the their feat although had a sad ending, was also a story of triumph, glory and victory, all of which are life's components...I am now at peace and able to accept that great story of the minions. sad as it may seem in the end,, but was also inspiring and has lots of things to teach us....Mabuhay our Minions !!!

    People said that Badminton is the fastest racket sports. Men's doubles is always seen as the fastest among all of the disciplines. They did rise very quickly to badminton stardom. I remembered the era when I watched them and I kind of had that feeling of no anxious of the result. I mean, they would just clinched the trophy. But, in the end, the spark was just not there. In doubles discipline, sometimes you have to deal with the fact that your partner shows a subpar performance, and what you will do in that kind of situation. It's like you win together and you lose together thingy. Gideon was the type of hard working person, Kevin was blessed with a special talent, more like a gifted rare breed player. The combination worked out very well. Honestly I doubt anyone could've replaced Gideon as Kevin new partner and vice versa. The chemistry was there. The chemistry they wouldn't have gotten if paired with another. But when the chemistry had been gone, the end was clearly in sight.

    Mention it 1 by 1:
    8 World Tour titles in a year;
    29 Super Series and World Tour titles (19 World Tour titles);
    4 consecutive wins at the same tournament;
    Number 1 MD world ranking for 227 weeks.
    Maybe 30 years later some MD will break one of Minion's records, 50 years to break half, and 100 years to break all of them.

For me, despite their lost to endo yuta in final all england 2020, it was their best performance so far. If they can play soon after that tournament the fire was still there. It was indeed very sad to see the end of minions.
    What is even more sad is the PBSI arrogance. I understood Kevin upset on Herry IP and remember those match of India Open where Herry asked minions to give way to Angga and Rian and earlier reason of Marcus left the national training center, also upset to Herry IP.
    What I couldn't understand why PBSI let the situation and thinking that they have 6 potential top MD pair rather than accommodate new partner for Kevin.
    Very late only PBSI punished Herry IP by shifting him from MD head coach to XD head coach, but that was too late.

    they had a good run. one of the most winningest pair if not the most won. that is the natural path of sports.
    something new comes in, it will take time for everyone to adjust. they were on top for 3-4 years and just won all but major end tournaments.
    it was still a successful career.

    Ben, we couldn't thank you enough for this excellent video. This is simply the best badminton tribute I've ever watched. The way you presented the informations is stunning. I am sure the amount of research you did for this beautiful video must be massive. It requires immense dedication to produce such splendid quality of presentation like this one. Thanks a lot, Ben. I hope you keep making tribute like this for the upcoming-retire legendary shuttlers. This way, we will remember for long and long that in a particular era, there were players as legendary as them that don't deserve to be forgotten quickly.

    Minions is literally the Lee Chong Wei of Men's Double, both of them are the game changer for their respective sector, known for their consistency of defending the #1 world rank for a quite long time, and mastering the Superseries / World Tour but sadly never won major event tittle ie Olympic or World Championship well in this case Minions is a little bit luckier because they got Asian Games gold medal and become the main part of Indonesian Champions Squad in Thomas cup 2020 while Lee Chong Wei he almost got no major event title beside maybe Commonwealth games but i don't think that was even counted in BWF Calendar
    But no matter what both of them are pride of the country
    Minions and LCW is a Pride for Indonesia and Malaysia

    Whatever the case, they are still my favourite pair in men's doubles..given that i share the same stature with them so i tried to base my playing style on them..but just like Gideon and older by 2 years, it's really a struggle to completely recover from injury and get back to top condition so i feel why kevin got frustrated..anyway, the Minions will remain a badminton legend!

    Brilliant as always Ben! As a longtime badminton fan since 2002, I have always wanted to see high quality reviews, analysis, and summaries like those enjoyed by more well-known sports like football, NBA, and tennis, and your channel is the first to deliver such contents. I believe you will be the reason that badminton will finally become more popular in the west, just like what Drive to Survive did to Formula1. Cheers from Indonesia and Germany

    Appreciating your wife’s work!
    I initially thought your long-form content would be hard to get traction but I changed my mind. I think you have a shot at it Ben. In the edutainment space they started having long-form content that is doing well. If you grow consistently you’ll be the first guy to do long-form content in the badminton space. Woohoo! I hope you find a team, or at least some help, to help you grow. All the best!

      I'll pass on your appreciation to her.
      I do agree, it was a slight risk but having watched many long format UA-cam videos, and being hooked on subjects I never thought I would be, I felt it was possible.
      I'm by no means perfect, I have many things to improve on (a team would certainly help), but I'll keep working at it.
      Thanks again and hopefully let's see this channel grow 😊
