The view count for this anthem is criminally low, this song was huge and did it's part to get the word out, which with lots of international pressure, eventually got Mandela released. Now i said that in a very simplified way, lots more to it than just the song, but the awareness this song and it's message created did reach those with the means to change things, so yeah.. the song is important. And besides the message? it's a great song because well.. it's a vibe hehehe
Not only was this a real vibe back in the day, but it was the introduction for many of us into just what was happening with Mandela. I remember it as my own first time hearing of him, which led me into finding out what he was about. BTW - The Specials were ALWAYS a 'vibe'. Great songs. And really filled the dance floors in the Alternative Music venues.
The Specials were the sound of my youth, and excellent writers of ‘ protest songs’ More recently, they had another song ‘Vote for Me’, a timeless song about elected politicians, well worth a viewing, and it is as relevant today as is was when it came out a few years ago
This was amazing Live. And now we see what kind of man Mandela was, an amazing leader. Never give in. Hold onto your beliefs. Things can always change.
Was at the second concert for Nelson Mandela ( the one after he'd been freed) and this song was amazing being sung by the whole crowd of 90,000. When Mandela himself came out on stage the whole crowd went crazy, unbelievable moment.
Yeah we couldn’t end the journey without this song. This song as a integral part of that history. I wasn’t born yet, so I have no idea how big it really was. But I do know from the historical accounts, that this song was a big part of letting the world know about Mandela. And it still is a great song by the way!
Massive song in the UK , when we all in Trafalgar Square protesting outside the South African Embassy in London
