That’s all great advice. I agree 1000% since I got back into the hobby in 2020. Sitting on cases of Cosmic, Unified, and Unbroken Bonds when these boxes were only $100 each. Just like that I have thousands and thousands of dollars just on that play alone.
if you are getting upset in this hobby for any reason, taking a small break from collecting/investing/news content related to Pokémon and sitting down to catch back up on the anime then coming back with a happy face can help! (rinse & repeat for prolonged effects!)

Good point over a month ago there were like 20 of them at my local card shop in the binder for $3 I only picked up one since I was worried about the risk but now I know better.

I literally sold all 120 copies I had and as soon as they got delivered to the buyer they tripled in price....
Think of your investing like a winery would their grapes. grow grapes, sit on it for 5 years. Every year just keep bottling until you reach 5 years. Then every year after that youll be releasing a 5 year old win year on year.

When i realized how much money we were spending ripping packs I looked around to see to use the hobby to spin up someoney to fuel the hobby. Thanks for helping me spend more time with my kids and teach them to have fun and look for opportunities at the same time!
Honestly this is so true. When the celebrations ETBS came out, I was buying a bunch of the gold star greninja promos. They were easy to get, most of them were sealed and super cheap. My thought process was not only is it a cool card, but it’s a damn goldstar & it’s tied to a massive milestone. 25 years of pokemon. It was a no brainer to me. Psa 10s of that card are now selling for $400 😂
I have been in healthcare for 20 years. Im 40. Kids are grown. About to have my first grandkid!! I played with pokemon when i was in high school when it came here. I got a lot of hell for it also.... So I did quit. Got older, i got into old coins ect. I like pokemon for "nostalgia" and old coins for the history and the possiblity someone like say jesus or jesse james or who ever might of held a coin or bill!! You can learn a lot about ones country's history through the fiat!! Pure and simple fun!!! I want more of this in my life!!

I just did the same thing for all the sun and moon promos a few months ago. The Umbreon darkrai promo was literally 30 bucks and now it's 100. The Mewtwo mew tag team promo was 45 and now it's 100. Look at the Charizard promos in the Charizard premium collection. They were all under 5-10 bucks a year ago and now one of them is 35 and the others are 15-20 in a few months time. That is a good point. I did many of the illustration rares too. If you like the cards it's not really that much of a risk because even if they don't go up they hold value and loving to collect them is the silver lining. It's easier for true collectors to make the money because they usually hold way longer
Solid advice. Since I like to invest and rip packs, I've shifted my energy away from acquiring sealed product (letting my existing investments ride) and I look for products that have cheaper packs for me to rip. For example, I recently bought 12+ cases of Bloodmoon Ursaluna EX and Houndstone EX boxes at around $15-16 per box to get a bunch of desirable packs to rip (SS, TM, SC). Diamonds in the rough.
4 or so years ago I trusted my gut and bought a good amount of Shining Fates, Vivid Voltage, Chilling Reign, and Evolving Skies. Fates and Voltgage were essentially duds accounting for inflation. But Chilling and Skies made up for it. Going to do something similar this time around. Just trying to decide on which 3-4 of the pre-Prismatic sets I believe in. Point is, take some shots and wait long enough and the losers break even while the winners score you money.

I personally think the best way to bulk up your investment incrementally is hunting raw cards with decent multipliers when graded. A $1000 investment (being picky about condition) can easily turn into 5-10x that with a good grading run of smart cards. An example of this is the eeveelution premium collection promos. If you can buy them at their inflated 50-60 bucks raw, they sell for 500+ in a 10. Same thing with medium to high value modern alt arts. You are pretty much doubling your money if not tripling when they 10. You risk a 9 and either sell it raw by cracking, or in the case for raw or slightly higher depending on the card. That means your losses are almost guaranteed to be small, but your gains are going to be pretty big depending on each grading run.

Imo a lot of the overlooked surging sparks illustration rates are def a next good call. Just after the shrouded fables ones who would have thought good art drives demand if it’s a good Pokémon OR from original 151 for sure!!

Great advice. I’ve started this strategy this last week and now I’m currently looking daily at dozens of cards that are less than $5. Planning on making several purchases very soon.
One of the communities I am apart of had someone trying to buy 100 greninjas from celebrations back when it was released. You could buy them for a couple bucks each. Feels very similar. This guy wasnt some rich guy, just a mechanic that had a small collection.
Dropped some knowledge with a clean exit.
I had so much CZ booster bundles since I could smell them drying up.
Couldn't help but opening them because the set is so fun.

I picked up 48x copies of the Crown Zenith Lucario VStar ETB promo when they were under $1. The card seem to be doing quite well now. lol
With the upcoming team rocket cards coming out , people are sleeping ont the team rocket 1st edition cards. They will blow up when the new cards come out.

My best time horizon moment was a little over a year ago I bought out "Josh's Cards" remaining ETB's for Obsidian Flames for $30 per. I loved that Charmander! And couldn't understand then why everyone didn't think too much of it. Come current, same box is high $60's confirmed sales across the hobby.
Like you said, the market was littered with those ETB's that no one wanted. I think the promo was under $5 then and is over $20 now.
I have to say I bought 36 of those mewtwo promos for less than $2 each. I knew it was a play but didn't realize it would be this kind of a play.

I legit bought 200 mewtwos and felt that it was definitely a sleeper for a promo. Wasn’t expecting that for the Mew given the extreme chase for the bubble mew

I love that 151 mewtwo promo I bought a stack sealed $2 each. It felt undervalued but I wanted a stack for my PC regardless. And now not surprised all those jumped up. I got stacks of special delivery charizard promos also that are now making a big jump

I bought a bunch of the Mew and Mewtwo along with the Snorlax from 151. Then start eyeing the Charmander promo before the PC version went crazy and the basic ones popped as well.
Pokémon is a different beast than other TCGs.
People should never spend more than they are comfortable with losing. Just like the stock market…everything goes up if demand overall is high.

Groudon was like €4-5? It's €25 now... got like 97 tyrantiars for €1.80? Don't even know what it's worth now... probably €5

Sadly I thought $20 was high for the stained glass because it was a promo but I also took notice of its beauty.. but not enough to actually pick one up for myself unfortunately.. now I just feel it’s one I’ll leave in the past unless it pops up down the road in a trade or something

That’s why I only buy cards that I know will go up instead of cards that I personally like. I bought 25 Zekrom trainer gallery and 20 gold star greninja for like $1-$2 each. I mean it’s a freaking gold star, they’re hundreds-thousands of dollars and the zekrom was pretty obvious to me. The art was as good as anything else from that era and it has N on it and the other card he and zekrom are on is like $50 so it made sense it had the potential to be $10 in 5-10 years, but it’s supply and demand, just buy cards you know people will want in the future, the supply will eventually dry up and the prices will rise. If you buy a crap card no one wants it’s no better than a beanie baby. 🤷♂️
Invest in stuff you like. Most likely there will be others liking them too.

I would argue now probably isn’t the time to look for undervalued cards unless you’re going to flip them within a year, because in a year or two we could see a repeat of the last boom and things could be dirt cheap again and then it would be much easier to find things that are undervalued
