    Being in print manufacturing for 10 years (mostly beverage labels) what we are seeing (or not seeing) on the shelves today is what was printed likely mid to late 2024. Typically, orders placed today are for projected demand in 4-8 months, and that demand is usually based on the last 12-18 months of sales. With product sitting on the shelves, demand appeared to be low. The market didn't start showing upswings until Twighlight, so why would they order a bunch of Prismatic and Journey to be printed when the market appeared uninterested?
    When actual demand outpaces projections, like we started seeing during Surging Sparks, companies do put in those "oh shit' orders to their partners, which they probably started putting in slightly before their announcement. Even with those orders it still takes at least a month or more for the new production to make it to the customer. It likely won't be until Q2, maybe even Q3, when the newly ordered production runs are actually seen by us.
    Let's just hope that they put in enough orders to not only improve availability of current product, but are able to increase availability for the rest of the planned sets this year.

      In a few months, the market will get flooded by Surging Sparks, Prismatic Evolutions, and Journey Together. Team Rocket set will definitely be printed to insanity as well. This is giving me Deja Vu to 2020 with Champion’s Path, Vivid Voltage, and Shining Fates. The situation isn’t exactly parallel, but the market sentiment is similar enough and TPC is going to do the exact same thing

      They are not stupid. New expansion introduces and pushes new pokemon nobody knows or really cares about. Then they introduce all these futuristic versions of pokemon. Then next two sets have not more than 1-2 chase cards. Lots of good IR's throught every S& V set but people want expensive chases in a set and if you pull a nice $8 dollar iR nice but not enough to push a set. T hey have witnessed 151 gain lots of traction and always sells out right away so they should have known a PIKachu set with a latios SIR followed by eeveelution set would have insane demand compared to the first 6-7 sets of sets.,

      6 to 8 months ago when they were planning how much of this to print Scarlet and Violet wasn’t exactly flying off the shelves. The amount that Danny is getting relative to, for instance, stellar crown, is logical if viewed through the lens of the summer of 2024.

    14:07 i think the reason theyre allocating to big places like amazon and costco is because they take massive quantities and they're more consistent. I used to work for a distributor that was basically almost kept alive by amazon. The distributor had a huge problem with getting the usual vendors to pay for their orders unless they were pre-orders so product would just get stuck all packaged up not being allocated to vendors that would have actually paid. I know of a couple other distributors that had amazon as one of their biggest customers. Amazon is incredibly strict with their orders (because they can be) and if you don't give them everything they ordered there are actual consequences.

  • @johnnypernik5578
    @johnnypernik5578 2 дні тому +3

    Hey guys, we’re super envious of how far ahead you get your allocations over in the States!
    Over here in Europe the situation is a whole different story - our EU distributor (yes, the monopolistic one 😅) only gave us the Prismatic allocation just one week before delivery, and for the Surprise Boxes and mini Tiny we still haven’t received any allocations, only word that they’re about 4 weeks delayed.
    We can’t even take pre-orders now, because we don’t want to end up in the same nightmare we had with 1st wave of Prismatic (where we got one of the worst-case scenarios, like 1/5 of what we expected, plus ongoing delays).
    It's nightmare..

    As a father of a competetive junior PokemonTCG player I'm terrified of Journey Together. It's a new block which means there is rotation. That shifts the whole meta game. Availibility of Surging Sparks and Prismatic Eevolutions did not bother players - both sets have like 5 meta relevant cards together. Journey together is different. And with lot's more sealed collectors and "investors" the playable bulk cards are not as easy to get.

      I understand if you're saying you want to pull the cards yourself for your decks that you're scared. If you are just a player though just buy singles. There are promo and base rarities for all playable singles. The allocation issues aren't a lack of product on the market, it's just more competition in stores wanting pokemon cards to sell. Unless you need to play with the SIR version of cards the playable singles prices will be fine after a week or two

That's the one good thing about having a lgs in this market. I also know a massive sneaker guy who only uses bots who have more 151, zenith, and Prismatic than everyone I've seen combined. So, I have a harsh-ish take on this: Since Pokemon is one of the only TCG's that DOES NOT require a buyer to have a brick-and-mortar shop (with play space not just retail. Like to carry MtG, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc you have to have dedicated space for at least 8 people to play. Supposed to. I'm sure there are exceptions out there. Especially grandfathered in accounts pre-covid era.) in order to purchase from distros, this is why we see the shortages and abysmal allocations we see. I know you're an online seller and I'm not throwing shade at you for that but if everyone and their brother has access to Pokemon product by simply getting a business license and getting accepted by a distro, with the amount of Pokemon "shops" that have sprung up, even abysmal allocations eat into legitimate(?) allocations.
    100's, if not 1000's, of pop up Pokemon stores have popped up and even if each of those new shops are only allocated 1 or 2 cases....well, you see where I'm going with that hopefully.

  • @BloodSweatGearsGaragePTC
    @BloodSweatGearsGaragePTC 3 дні тому +15

    Walmart, costco, and target are at top of the chain not LGS and resellers. This is artificial scarcity being perpetrated by Pokemon Company. They have also spun up several hundred vending machines run by Pokemon Company to ensure they are getting full MSRP. What everyone is really mad at is no more wholesale to the public on release.

    • @Saythra
      @Saythra 3 дні тому +1

      I doubt any sensible person is upset that stuff isn't wholesale at release. People upset because they can't find stuff anywhere. That Prismatic ETBs are selling for $120+ from third parties. Finding them in stores is near impossible. That Terastral BBs are floating around $100 for what should be a $60ish box.
      There is a supply issue. Is TPC intentionally creating scarcity? I don't know. I'm not an insider to know. But they definitely seem to constantly underestimate how much demand a set will create. And in some cases, over estimate what will be also.

    • @BloodSweatGearsGaragePTC
      @BloodSweatGearsGaragePTC 2 дні тому +1

      I have been able to purchase multiple case at MSRP without issue. The pokemon company has been printing larger quantities every consecutive year, and has just recently run into an issue. The big box store get restocked every week as does the vending machines. They are not worried about LGS or rip n shippers as they make more off of big box stores. This is FOMO run rampant and Pokemon taking the opportunity to increase their profit margins. No stuff sitting on shelves is the goal of every company so they never have to discount their product. Once the next set releases you will find all the prismatic you ever wanted. The real problem is people paying over MSRP instead of being patient or putting in the work to find product.

      I don’t know, the thing to bear in mind that there’s a lot more to this than just “turn it up to 11”.
      Everyone knew Sparks and Prismatic were going to be popular, but what they didn’t bargain for was the number of people new or rejoining the hobby and the general increase in demand in general. You can’t just go from printing at, I dunno 60% capacity to 100% capacity when you’re working at this scale. Global supply chains become an issue. Shipping crates of things around the world takes planning months in advance. The increase in demand for the hobby as a whole has put huge strain on existing plans, and those plans can’t be changed easily.

      Honestly that’s where MY frustration is at- the Pokémon Company released Pokémon Pocket clearly intending for it to draw a younger/wider audience into the TCG. Why are they so unprepared for a surge in demand for the sets printed shortly after? Are their execs seriously sitting in their offices wearing Surprised Pikachu.png faces because they printed the same amount of cards on the same amount of printers but magically there seems to be a shortage of supply now? Especially when they are also clearly trying to draw back older Pokémon fans as well with sets based on OG favourites like eevee and Team Rocket. This is the most successful franchise ever, surely they hire the best business minds they can. How did they not think to secure some extra printers in case their marketing did its job??

Use an online randomizer to choose randomly the amount of people equal to your allocation. Then send them a special email and give them 3 days to make the order. If they don’t, then choose someone else randomly afterwards. I feel this is fare and NO ONE can complain that bots or you screwed them over.

    Allocation is down to distribution, print run is Pokemon. Pokemon have to be increasing the print run if they can they aren't stupid they are sending more product to Big Box stores than ever before, I also think distribution is keeping product back as they know prices will rise at the moment.

    This is just more proof of what many of us have been saying all along. Pokemon has already been printing at 100% capacity and must have been caught off guard by this big boom in demand. It could take a year or more for Pokemon to open more printing facilities IF they even decide to do that. The lack of SV reprints, the delayed release of Shrouded Fable, the empty store shelves. There's lots of evidence in support that they have been printing at 100% for quite some time.

    I must be missing something here, love you, Brian, btw!
    What is the issue for stores? You guys do 60% of the work and make 400% more margin selling at MSRP, this is how the market should work, isn't it? Don't you want these higher margins? As long as we're at MSRP, that's fair for both the consumer and the store, right?
    Are you upset for the consumer who's finally forced to pay MSRP instead of the wildly underpriced $95-$110 a booster box? Or are you upset that you are getting half the allocation you used to get on a booster box set, but making 5x the margin? I'm not trying to start crap, I'm legitimately wondering what is so wrong here to cause such rants from you and Fanny. I know there's a shortage of product, but at least stores are making good margins again, and Journey Together pre orders seem to be more plentiful than Prismatic. Stores need to be selling at MSRP after the Prismatic drought, so I'm glad you guys finally get to make some money.
    The demand is just too high right now. The Pokemon Company needs to open a new printing facility or expand their current one, that's the only solution, but by the time that happens, this bull market will have cooled off and we will have fallen back closer to the previous norm, but never again will you see a booster box selling for below $100.

      Here’s some reference numbers. For prismatic most stores at my level would get 3000 ETBS. Maybe make $10 a piece back in 2023… that’s 30K
      Now, stores at my level MIGHT get 300 boxes. At msrp we’re making $20 profit… do the math

    Big box stores are 100 percent getting the bulk of the inventory, LCS are just not a priority to pokemon it's not pokemons responsibility to keep these businesses in business they have to diversify and adapt just like any other business. At the end of the day pokemon is going to do what is best for pokemon. I seriously doubt they want to kill the boom by printing everything to the ground and be stuck with inventory for long periods of time like with sword and shield.

    Solid video, but are you sure that it's Pokemon printing less? Maybe distro accounts aren't seeing more product because distro is hijacking some of their own allocation for future use, or Pokemon is pushing more product towards the big box stores, or even allocating more product to themselves for the PC and vending units? I 100% believe that Pokemon is printing more inventory, but I think that there's some shady business happening behind the scenes limiting what distribution is giving out to their customers.

    My stores in philly are bone dry. My job doesn't afford me the time to stand in line the morning of restocks, so shelves are empty when I get there. I can tell those restocks are miniscule because Lorcana has been spread to take up half of the pokemon product space (in some cases ALL). We have many walmarts and targets. I spent a weekend hunting, and when I tell you the shelves were bare, the only thing I found was 1 tera powers at a target, and some MJ Holdings 20+1 packs at every walmart. They went from 2 sections per store to wasteland once prismatic was announced. I've heard people say surging sparks started this mess, but that's not true. It sat on shelves all the way through early December. Everything got wiped out with the Christmas rush, but Never returned.

    Thought it was pretty clear in Danny's video that it's not that PC are printing less, and that's why youre not getting as many products as previously.. its that your distributors are spreading out their product to more stores (because more stores are ordering as they know they can make money)
    PC are running their printers at max capacity, you're deluded if you think PC are leaving money on the table on purpose

      Manufacturing artificial demand is a useful tactic to ensure products sell for MSRP (i.e maximum profit margins for PC as people will buy directly from Pokemon Center) - it is not useful to artificially inflate demand to the point where people are willing to pay above MSRP as that is essentially leaving money on the table for PC

      @@luke45879except TPC already got paid for the product when it went out. They "don't care" what the product price is after they get paid. They made their money already. If a distributor sells the product they bought from TPC for more than they paid to get it, that's just profit for them. That extra doesn't go back to TPC.

    I don't think people truly understand how ASTRONOMICALLY high demand is right now and how powerless pokemon is when they are already printing at max capacity for all their sets in current rotation AND printing upcoming sets/products at the same time. It's definitely partially their fault because they release so many products/sets constantly as well as have a shit ton of sets to keep printing from the year prior & for the upcoming ones ahead BUT the current demand for these products is the largest pokemon/any TCG has EVER seen by literal miles.

    If pokemon decides to make more product, wouldn't they also need to implement more raw materials needed too, and wouldnt the cost also increase with the raw materials as well, like the printing ink, cardboard for the cards, plastic as well and even metal for tins? Even if they do end up printing more product, I feel like they still have to pay for using more raw materials, which then turns to msrp increasing a bit, making the consumer to pay for it.

    The difference is the surge in demand from people who have come in from Pokémon TCG Pocket and the people who have come in from the gap year in main series game releases. Which has made Pokémon cards very liquid for more stores, which makes more stores want to get them from distributors.
    I seriously doubt TPC is prioritizing JTO, which is likely why the supply for that set is rather low - all their spare printers/printing time is likely going towards PRE at the moment. Maybe that's a mistake, maybe not. But it's TPC is likely firing on all cylinders because they don't want to lose out on the massive amounts of profit they're going to make off of this hype. I think it's fair to say that TPC is not blameless, but they're not entirely to blame.
    Also, you can't magic up 5 million cases of booster boxes in 5 seconds. It takes time to print, quality control, package, quality control, package, and ship.
    Everyone is partly to blame. Whether you're buying, ripping, selling, collecting, scalping, printing, assessing, or just talking about the issues. Sure, there's different degrees of blame put on each group, but the whole blame game needs to go.

There needs to be a solution out there that involves more than just printing more.

    I have been collecting since 1996.
    I have not seen an ETB of prismatic in any regular store since release.

      What's changed is a massive increase in collector demand. Here in the UK everywhere had limits (usually one per person) and the ETB's are £75-80 on eBay so there's no money in scalping it. Despite that it changed nothing, it's sold out everywhere. Massive ques on release day so people could get their 1 ETB. Sure there's an increase in resellers but they're taking advantage of the problem rather than causing it. If they could cause it they'd have done it for the first half of SV.

    The distributors are using this as an opportunity to spearhead a "Land & Expand" strategy. To them, with demand for Pokemon being what it is, they're going to sell all that inventory whether it's to 100 accounts or 250 accounts. They also understand that card shops can't survive on solely selling Pokemon so they're trying to bring in new accounts that will ultimately increase exposure to their other product lines (e.g. MTG). This is especially critical if TPCI is increasing allocations to big box retailers and reducing allocations to these distros. I collect Pokemon myself so I understand the frustration to an extent. This environment is all around ruthless and ultimately, loyalty to distros carries no weight. The distros have sales teams that are tasked with growth numbers so they're using this boom as an avenue to set themselves up for the medium to long term, even if it means some loyal Pokemon-heavy accounts suffer or even shutter their doors as a result.

    My conspiracy theory here is that Pokemon won't print more because they don't need to. The hype and scarcity in the secondary market is keeping interest in the primary market high, and cards are flying off the shelves. Pokemon is likely able to charge more to distributors (increasing their margins per product), and are also able to get rid of less desirable collection sets. Heck, even Shrouded Fable is flying off the shelves! If I thought of Pokemon as strictly money in money out, seems like they're in a pretty great spot right now and have little to no reason to mess with it.

They often plan sets 1-2 years in advance of their launch and WHAT IF ..... the bear market of 2023 scared them and so they pulled back on printing numbers like 18 months ago. All these premium sets are getting short printed because they were ordered a while ago. I think Pokemon needs to have the flexibility to ramp up production. when needed. That, or they need to slow down on their release schedule and focus more on printing existing sets.

    Agree with you 100% that the only way out of this is printing more and more main product not just houndstone ex collection boxes. I don't really understand how more product is not reaching the market. They own Millennium print group now so it shouldn't really be that big of a hurdle. If this is some sort of strategy to keep the "hype" up, I think it's definitely outlived its usefulness cause that hype has turned into frustration and anger. There's also absolutely no reason for Pokemon to protect the "collectability" of the products. The price growth for SWSH products clearly shows that the market can handle a lot more supply while the products still retain their value or collectability.
    Then again Pokemons a big company and getting a big ship to turn always takes time. So I guess there's still hope that that's the case and we'll get huge amounts of product in a few months...

    So you touched on this and so did Danny but I think its worth talking about more: there is no reason that Menards, Dicks, Scheels, and Ace Hardware, etc should be getting Pokemon cards. This creates a number of problems but my biggest takeaway from that is all that product is taken away from LGS. Even if it is just ETBs or tins or whatnot. I think any LGS would be happy with any product right now.
    One other thing, is Pokemon is going to give this much product to big box retailers than Target cant be dropping product during the night. Like its not that hard haha. At least Walmart drops in the morning or evening but Target drops it all at 3am. Give general consumers a chance; regulate your product a bit. Obvi Target does this for some reason but Pokemon should at least step in and say hey, lets try and release at X time even if it is 7am or 10pm when the site might have less users.
    Lot to digest, you hear the pain in Danny's voice and even him swearing which is unheard of; I feel for him. Great video as always, look forward to more

    Breakers (unregulated gambling) don’t help sealed product costs either & there are 5 new ones popping up daily. Pokémon is moving to more of a underage gambling model hidden beneath a card game. More organized pump & dumps to come!

    I know you said bots aren’t necessarily the problem but they are a significant factor too it if you’re reading this PokeNE there is one way you could cut down on them which is by forcing a captcha problem before checkout 😅 it could go a long way to fighting bots while also boosting confidence and trust with your customers! I hope you think about doing this when you release your preorder for journey together and I will definitely be checking out the Danny’s video too thanks for always thinking about consumers and the longevity of the game 😊

    You nailed it on who is to blame. However, I don’t think everything is the same still. There are plenty of people who just pay attention to trends that are buying out stores just to resell. There hasn’t been a boom like this in several years. That’s the only thing you said that I think you missed slightly, but that’s just my opinion. I appreciate you putting this out though, because the more this gets exposed the better off the community will do. Pokemon will take notice to this. They may ignore it for a while, but they will have to make a change if they want to keep all of their customers.

    You mention other games and say margins suck so dealers can't look there. But when Pokemon was readily available, margins sucked there. It seems like people want BOTH (a) for Pokemon to sell at MSRP+ when they have it and (b) to be able to easily get it. You only get to pick one.

    Im guessing the Surging Sparks reprint wont affect the prices or availability much. The booster boxes will soar after everyone realizes there in no extra supply of them.
