Good luck Richard..nothing annoys me more than tightly packed record boxes at fairs..and you're spot on, I usually give up and walk away..it can also create fogging on the vinyl itself. The condition of those looks really nice and I have no doubt you're a very fair seller.
Thanks, Rob. Stuffed display boxes seems to be the hot topic from comments posted so far. I think some sellers feel they might be losing out if they don't fill every box to the brim with vinyl stock - I think that approach is actually detrimental to making sales!
This was a brilliant video Richard you've done yourself proud 👍 have to agree with pretty much everything you said. A card machine is only about £30 off Amazon though providing internet works. I'm still on a time out from selling due to being busy elsewhere and wanna get back into it. Stock and cleaning piles are building up! Watch your back muscles with the boxes 👍 overpacked is the worst.
Thanks, Martin. I am hesitating about a card machine because I am not sure it would derive me any additional sales. The buyers at those fairs I attend largely have the ethos of paying in cash. Hope you get the time to sort out your stockpile and get back to selling again soon.
Yes Richard! with my buyer's head on, Tip 5, Tip 5, Tip 5 and importantly Tip 5...Nice attention to detail and thanks for all the tips for when I finally get round to selling at fairs. Cheers Dale
Thanks, Dale. It seems tip 5 is the hot topic based on comments posted so far. I believe some sellers feel they might be losing out if they don't fill every box to the brim with vinyl stock - I think that approach is actually detrimental to making sales. Look forward to seeing you on the other side of the table soon!
Lots of top tips there Richard. I hate it too when a box is rammed, it makes filming a rummage very difficult ; ) I think I've got a few for the £5 bargain box for sure. Its alot of work indeed so I think you deserve a good payoff for your efforts. I am hoping to do a local record fair at some stage just to have a good bargain clear out and for a few things I bought to flip but I gather you need insurance to take part? For my local one its something crazy like a million pounds, I suppose just in case a falling satellite takes everyone out!
Most fairs organisers (in my experience not all) require the sellers to have their own 'market traders' insurance, in case of claims made for hazards - including personal injury to punters from listening to Todd Rundgren albums!
Great advise Richard. I agree about the grading stickers.. I think one of the reasons Clive is so popular are his labels are very professional. The golden rule I learnt from sales is ‘perception is reality’ if people think you look professional then that helps. I imagined a stall just selling punk/post punk would be popular so again interesting. Sell through rates lower than I thought, but I guess if you can average £8/ £10.00 a record that would be decent.
Thanks, Harris. Agreed about Clive, the 'professional' approach to selling achieves results and gets you the £jam on top! The 'punk guy' seems to do slow business at the fairs - I get the feeling the hardcore punk aficionado's already have most of it. Your figures are about right - decent return on an average selling day, but that situation reinforces my tip/suggestion to keep attending fairs to turn over the stockpile.
You’ve reminded me on how much I miss the record shops, both second hand and HMV etc. flicking through, not knowing what you’re looking for until you find it..Sold my vinyl years ago..Regrets A? I Still have couple of singles about. I have the Live E.P by The Jam which came with the initial copies of “SNAP” and Stiff Little Fingers “Alternative Ulster” . Everything got replaced on CD. . I remember first playing a CD of an album I had on vinyl and getting up to turn it over , then realised I didn’t have to..Ha. That was a great bit of advice on how to sell and package ..Well done.
Thanks for watching, Maurice. It sounds like you should really get back into vinyl - how about visiting your local record fair and picking up some good records there.
Really enjoyed that Richard. As you know I don’t sell, but obviously should, so this was great advice. Where’s your next record fair? I must admit I do find it convenient when a seller takes cards. I always use a card with Clive, I find if I have spent all my cash I can resort to card. Also, for bigger buys. You have a terrific selection for sale. Mike
Thanks, Mike. Next fair is Newbury on Saturday. I probably get away with cash/Paypal payment options as my records don't usually go above the £30 mark - with some of Clive's £big hitters he would need security to hand if he took cash!
Yes! Definitely hate overpacked boxes. Some dealers have actually gotten funny with me when I removed a chunk because they organised things accordingly but I can’t see the records and all you do is squeeze your fingers in between the records trying to have a look and your creasing the top of the record covers. Some don’t mind if you remove a chunk from the boxes to have a better look and rest them on top of the next box, but if it’s busy and other people are looking through the next box next to you, there’s nowhere to put the stack of records. Also (I’m going off on one now 😅) if you find a record that interests you and you pull it out and decide to put it back for whatever reason, you have to squeeze it back to where you found it and that’s how paper scruffs on records appear and ring wear from the record rubbing so tightly in the jacket. 😡
That matter is the hot topic it seems - Dale has mentioned in in his comment too. I think some sellers feel they might be losing out if they don't fill every box to the brim with vinyl stock - I think that approach is actually detrimental to making sales!
One of your sealed Bowies “metroboist” have a randomn numbered coloured vinyl - low amounts - and they can be worth a bit - only way to tell is to open it! You may want to check 🎉
Absolutely. I will be replacing the thicker cloudy outer sleeves with thinner clear sleeves in the near future to up the presentation of the albums stock.
I always find it odd how so many buyers don't take a bunch out of a full box then flick through. As a seller I often have to tell them to or remove a bunch myself.
As a buyer, I personally hate oversized, cloudy outer sleeves like you have. I know it's an insignificant gripe, but it just bugs me. It's worse when the sleeves are dirty. Crisp, clean, well fitting polypropylene (clear) outer sleeves create a better impression.
Tip 13 - Always alphabetize the records. The amount of sellers at record fairs that don't alphabetize or even categorize their records is unbelievable. There's no better way of telling people without telling them that you don't respect their time or appreciate their patronage when you don't do these things. If a seller doesn't have their records in alphabetic order or at least categorized by genre I won't bother looking to see what they have. My first question is always how are your records organized and if they tell me they're not and it's all random, I move on to the next table.
A very good point well made. I overlooked mentioning that in the video - you might have noticed that is the way I store records in each box. It is helpful for instances when someone asks 'do you have anything by artist xxx?' and if I do I can find it quickly.
Ive got the Skids album you mentioned, never knew it came with a free 12" single 😲😲😲

@@Vinyl-Heaven-And-Hell2023 Tbf that is alot of brain damage 🧠
Very reasonable prices, your voice Richard reminds me of Jimmy Carr
I price my records at the lower end of their market rate - happy to sell for just a small profit (hopefully!). Thanks for watching.

If i was at the Rec Fair and going through your bins i would've bought the Roxy Music "avalon" 12" and the REM "man on the moon" 7" single.
The Roxy Music album 'Avalon' sold at the record fair held the day after I posted this video - it was priced very reasonably. Thanks for watching.

Awesome, good luck. I think record prices are going up. Especially collectibles
Thanks. Yes, prices are pretty strong for collectable vinyl in the UK at the moment.

Presentation and cleanliness is jey to get top dollar.

Maybe buyers feel that sellers would not like them manhandling a bundle of records? Martin (martinsvinyl) alluded to that in his comment posted above.
@@Vinyl-Heaven-And-Hell2023 Possibly a factor for some, in my experience most people just don't think of this obvious solution to a crowded box.
