How to Cook OSTRICH STEAKS - Is Ostrich Better Than Beef?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 жов 2024
- You know that in this channel we cook it all but I think this time we went too far... Yep, we are cooking ostrich today! Commercial farming for ostrich became widespread during the 1970s. Common ostriches are so adaptable that they can be farmed in climates ranging from South Africa to Alaska.
I truly hope you enjoy this video as much as we did. Like and subscribe for more!

Lmao I won’t be surprised when he gets his hands on lion meat
HAHAHAH where is that lion meat man!! 😂😂😂
Salty Tales I mean there are people who pay to fly to Africa for the exact reason of getting lion meat or similar. Depending on laws when borders reopen you might be able to help pay for someone’s travel in exchange for a steak
“How to cook LION MEAT - are Lion steaks better than ostriche?!”
How about some crocodile? :P
Great comment.
Tried it for the first time (ostrich ground meat) and it tastes like Prime beef. I cooked it in bacon lard, Italian seasoning and used it in a meat red sauce. Soooo good.
Think they had a bad one
A delicious meat is delicious even only with salt air
Commenting here from Cape Town, South Africa - we used to eat ostrich quite often, definitely a strong gamey flavour which you get used to, the fillet should be cooked rare for best results IMHO. Ostrich is a very lean meat in general, over here you will find that ostrich sausages and ground ostrich often have lamb fat added to make up for the leanness.
AWE TJOMA!!
That’s pretty cool didn’t know that. Thanks
I actually love ostrich meat, it’s something different, I’d say it’s our local South African delicacy 🔥💪🏽
@@bs1919 Awe my bru!
I cooked it once, honestly one of the best meats I've had
Kinda nice to see ninja having his own take on things compared to a short appearance on Gugas channel. 👊🏻
Might be better to soak in salt water or buttermilk to get rid of the gamey flavor. That's what I do with wild venison. Always love your videos. Keep them coming!
Anything that get that flavor away will make it better. The main problem for me was the after taste.. Hard uncooked turkey flavor that I'm not sure anything can take away from that meat.
I'm glad I came across your channel. I was wondering where you went. Subbed
Thanks for the sub! and welcome to the family!! 😀😀😀
In South Africa it's often made into biltong (similar to jerky but hung and air dried in strips cut along the grain) which intensifies the flavor and South Africans love it.
I would love to try that! Do they sell it here in the US?
I'm a South African and I have Ostrich at least once or twice a month. I've always felt that it's a Much richer beef flavor and as tender as a filet mignon. It really is a delicacy though - it's delicious, but too much and you start to feel a bit sick (like lamb as well)
Your name is amazing.
@@thecarnivorecanoe5167 oh thank you! Only one to two people acknowledge the reference a year.
@@diogeneslantern18 😃🙏👊🤘
Grilled crispy asparagus with oil and salt is better than French fries IMO.
HAHAHAH Man you haven't try my fries! 😂😂😂
Also like 20x the price lol
@@somepunkasskid6864 lool
You did a good job seasoning it to your taste, too bad you didn't really like it. To each their own I guess, I personally love ostrich meat. I find it much more enjoyable than beef fillet for example.
Your presentation made it look really good. Almost wish I could try it.
Please do a video about cooking a guinea hen. I ate them several times when I was a kid and loved the taste and texture. I felt they were better than chicken.
That is a great idea! I used to eat guinea hen every Sunday when I was a kid! Love it! If I find it I'll be making the best guinea chicken ever recipe from grandma! 😀😀😀
I has Guinea hen once, yes, it was excellent!
I'm really surprised. I've had ostrich many times, mostly at a Mexican restaurant prepared like carne asada or strip steak. Then a coworker who had an ostrich farm gave me about 10lbs of meat and I made jerky with it. Might have been the best jerky I ever made. Sorry you didn't like it, but I haven't tasted the strong game flavor. Or maybe I had it with so many other flavors I didn't notice. I enjoyed this video nonetheless, thanks.
I'm sure if I eat it a few times I'll get used to it but it is an acquired taste for sure... This was my first time and I'm not actively looking for more... 😂 😂
Grass fed vs grain fed might change the flavor?
Just plain salt and pepper, treat it like a steak and its deeeeeee licous!!!!
I had it for a first time at a restaurant... I LOVED it immediately. Mine was not very gamey at all, and was wonderfully tender and tasty. (Maybe there was something wrong with your source?) Unfortunately I've only run into it twice, since.
How do you start a ostrich farm lol
I’m eating ostrich steaks right now !! Tastes like beef ! Delicious 🤤
I remember back in the 90s down south there were ostrich farms popping up everywhere it was the new big thing I wonder what happened because you hardly see them anymore I even saw it in select stores on occasion it was pricey though.
It is a very healthy meat but as you said it is expensive and... not for me! 😂😂😂 Thank you so much brother!
You guys know nothing, gimme all that ostrich!!! And where the eggs at? I need proteinnnnn 😍💪
P.S. I loved Mrs. Ninja's first attempt to scream "deeeelicious" 😭😂
HAHAHAH Man you can get them all! 😂 😂 😂
We buy it here, but I make sandwiches with it.! If I remember correctly, a couple years back you went hunting. How about doing some videos on duck, goose, pheasant or whatever game birds you can get in your bag..?
Oh brother! I love hunting and that is a great idea...duck, quail and hogs are available near me... I'll plan a few of those videos! I just need a buddy to go with me! Who's ready?!!! 😀😀
Salty Tales wish I was closer, I’d go.! I’ll throw up some videos this fall on cooking wild game as well, I love bird hunting ..!
Notification squad in the house 🙌
Ricky is in the house babay!! 😂😂😂
Bought some to try it out on Friday. I love the idea to have it with asparagus. Loved your video. ❤
Hmmmmm wonder why it wasn’t any good! I have had it before and thought it was excellent! Maybe because from where it came from?
I have no idea brother... The after taste was bad... *pretty bad* ... 😂😂😂
Lol big bird steak, like thenexotic meat idea totally different from the other channels!! Keep up the awesome vids
HAHAHA Thank you so much brother! 😂😂 That was a real wild one! 😂😂
Emu is pretty good, I've had burgers and the "turkey legs" they sell at Disney world are emu I'm pretty sure and it taste just like a baked ham
HAHAHA I love those turkey legs but they are really turkey legs.... Disney raise those turkeys for that purpose... Never tried emu before but I'm open minded! 😂 😂
Salty Tales wouldn’t be far from ostrich. If you do try it see if there’s any Australian bush cooking channels who can help from afar
I tried Ostrich B4 it's not for everybody! But it does have a good flavor for those of us looking for adventure! I only had the jerky. Part was good the other was gamey! I enjoyed both! I wish I could have it cooked!! But I enjoyed your guys opinion!! 😀😀😀 Thanks for the video 👍👍
DANGGGG!!!! Thanks for taking one for the team my brother. I would have bought ostrich to try it but I trust your judgment....glad I dodged that bullet!
That was my experience but I encourage you to give it a try and see if you like it... But put a lot of dry mustard before coking! 😀😀 Thank you so much!
Give it a try anyway. I didn't have Ninja's bad experience... thought it to be tender, very mildly gamey, and worth the eating.
Fantastic video! I have always wondered about ostrich. Now I know that I don't want to try it. I literally laughed out loud when Mrs. Ninja said, "This is not deeelicious!"
HAHAHA It is expensive and not great... For that price we can get some wagyu! 😂😂😂
No guys. I just don't get this. Ostrich can be delicious. Must have cooked it wrong or something was off because I eat it and its up there with Waygu. Don't understand how the cut you ate was so bad?? I have eaten it many times and it was delicious
Awesome job Ninja! 😃👍🏻👊🏻 .... even if you guys didn't like how Big Bird tastes! 😬 .... Next episode: How to cook Mr. Snuffleupagus! 😁
HAHAHA Fred!!! That is a great idea! 😀😀😀 Thank you so much!
Thanks for the honesty. The turkey aftertaste I get what you mean. What that means is that it has that bird flavor but very strong. I’ve tried organic chicken and it has that strong turkey taste.
Hiya, Ninja. Glad I found your channel, so I subbed. Sorry the ostrich was to gamey for you. Maybe next time you try it, you can marinade it in buttermilk or milk? I've done that with wild game before, and it works to take the gamey taste out. Also used it the one time I tried grilling shark.
If I'm cooking this thing again I will definitely follow your advices! 😂😂 welcome to the family brother!
bought already seasoned ostrich steak. Turned out completely delicious. Greetings from Germany
Love you guys. Just bought 2 ostrich steaks. 🇬🇧 ✌🏼
I put this comment before you said it was horrible 😂😂😂😂 I’ll keep you updated what I think 😁😂😂😂
Ninja, I bet it would be good with Indian spices, marinated in yogurt. Also , maybe Moraccan style might be good.
Oh man! Those spices can make rubber eatable! 😂😂😂 Thank you Sal!
i'm morrocan and i can confirme some of our spices can make rubber edible 😂
Almost bought it. Thank you!
I tried it, seasoned just with himalayan salt, one minute from each side on hot cast iron pan with tallow and it was so delicious in its blue rare state. Almost raw meat but with crispy crust and big melting piece of butter on top of it.
You had to use as much seasoning as possible to make it decent, including tallow which makes anything taste better.
I'm trying some soon!
I'll take ostrich over beef (or buffalo) any day of the week. There was a restaurant I used to go to all the time in Fort Lauderdale (now closed) that used to serve it and it was amazing! California Grill at Disney World often serves it also.
We have a DEAL!!! 😂😂😂😂
Its really all about the marinade..
I once visited an ostrich farm near my home. I wanted to pet the bird and the owner said, "Do what you want." I climbed into its pen and when the bird spotted me it went crazy and started chasing me which made the owner burst out laughing and say, "You women want to make a pet out of everything."
It's like wine, it's acquired taste. You should try Ostrich burgers. Ostrich is good for you, super lean and so many options. Love Ostrich Burgers and Ostrich Steak. Ostrich cooks really quickly. Which steak did you buy? Maybe you should make an Ostrich steak with Ostrich egg for breakfast. Love Miss Ninja impression of deeeelicious.
HAHAHA No man... I think I'll pass on this one! 😂😂😂 Thank you so much!! 😀😀
you must have done it wrong cuz I've had ostrich before and it was freaking amazing and everyone I know that has tried it has loved it
Careful to not overcook ostrich meat or it turns to rubber. We have it regularly; medallions, burgers and mince. Also sometimes have the neck in stews or in soup. Love it!
Thank you for the video. I'm coming and eating it tonight on my channel. I can't wait to taste what you did lol. Please watch
Lol watching for sure! 😀
Yes please. I hope I like it I'm sure I will. I love all weirdest foods lol. Everyone thinks im crazy
I’m Hollering!!🤣🤣🤣 This video is hilarious!! Y’all reaction has me crying
HAHAHAH That was a weird cook off!! 😂😂😂 Thank you so much Kueen!!! 😂😂
I gotta laugh!!! I never see this look on your face, Ninja!!!! Even when you had the non meat burger....that was shocking!
What about Blue Marlin steak?
Oh brother! Now we are talking!! 😀😀😀
I've just recently tried ostrich as well, I patted dry,I seared in butter. Let rest till cool to touch, then cooked to temp with salt and pepper and a bit of Lawry's for seasoning. It took me a couple tries to avoid it getting too tough.
Wow, caught this 10 seconds after upload! Leave it to Ninja to bring us the exotic eats!
AHAHHA That was a very wild one brother! 😀😀😀 Next time Lion meat! 😂😂😂
We get ostrich at the local butcher, I like my beef stakes better than ostritch steaks but I've started using ostrich for jerky and I'm starting to enjoy it more than beef jerkey
Ninja they raised ostrich near me in Arkansas and we butchered one and it was amazing as stirfry so please once again do a video where you make ostrich stirfry I promise you it is amazing
Hi everyone hope you all are well. I never had this before, good job cooking it. Take care:)
HAHAH Tere this is one O don't recommend! 😀😀
Lol I'm not trying it jajaja 😁
Ollllll ninja!!!!! Wow outstanding
Keep it up ninja great video. Right now I’m staying in Spring Hill Florida I should come down and cook an Italian dish with you... Jajaja
HAHAHAH I which brother! Mrs Ninja is still freaked out at the corona virus thing...
Salty Tales I don’t have that shit but if you want me to come down and do a video with you I will something spectacular and Italian - I’ll make your old friends sick
Ninja! Keep making delicious food. I like trying difference recipes and you chanel allos me to experiment a bit.
Great video Ninja🔥🔥🔥🔥
HAHAH Thank you Larry! 😂 😂
I love that you guys try different foods.👍👏👍
Awesome, love you guys.
Thank you so much!
Wow looks yummy
mmm I wont call it that! 😂😂😂 Thank you so much brother!
I would spread good amount of mustard on it, throw a rub and then wrap a bacon around it. I dont know if that gonna change anything but I saw people removing the gamey flavour using mustard and bacon just because it makes everything better.
That is something I would do if I have to eat it again... Bacon can fix it! 😂 😂 Powder mustard works wonders in gamey flavor! That is 100% true! Thank you so much brother!
Its been a long time since I had ostrich. I was surprised by how much it looked like beef and it also had beefy flavor.
Today you and Mrs Ninja killed me!
I started laughing and I didn't stop for three minutes in a row ahahahah
HAHAHAHA Man I'm glad you had fun with this video! It was a fun video for sure! 😂 😂 😂
I've given Ostrich a couple of chances. It's like a combination of gamie, metallic/liver, and a bit of a bird flavor.
I noticed your description of beef and chicken, which I would say duck is more in that range, where Ostrich is too metallic.
I was trying to find my words in the video but I was not prepared for that flavor. I guess you are right but I love duck... 😂 Man that was a crazy one! 😂😂😂
@@SaltyTales I love duck too. It's like a beefed up chicken, in a good way. Ostrich is a whole other weird meat. I find it perplexing how they charge high end prices for something that closely resembles metallic liver in flavor.
Lambros Pappas rich people eat weird stuff to feel special. Lobster used to be prison food. Until one rich guy tried it and decided it was good.
@@dylanzrim1011 That is very true. Lobster is actually delicious though, so I can understand the price hike on lobster (though it would be nice if it were affordable again).
@@lambrospappas578 Not a great food to eat. High toxicity bottom feeders.
Fossil farms is great! I use them all the time and they ship all over the US
Loin next?????? Great job again love it!
HAHAHA Coming soon! 😂😂😂
3:12-3:13 nice transition!!
"It's Not Bad...." :) I have 2 that I need to cook up tonight :)
Is Ostrich meat gamey?
It's not gamey like moose, or robust like elk or bison. Ostrich will take on the flavour of any marinade.
Bro you have to wash that meat in some fresh lime juice and marinate it for at least 2 hours before you cook that thing for it to taste good
Odd when I had it didn't taste any gamey taste or like poultry at all to me. I personally really like it
Yep... No idea why it tasted that way... All i can say is that it was not great 😀😀😀
He may have had a bad source?
We love you ninja ... te queremos y me alegra que te valla bien en tu propio canal 🇨🇺🙌🏻
I just bought some from the same company do you have any other suggestions on spices for it
Ostrich is delicious. It is just a 7 foot chicken with an attitude.
Best parts of this video are Ninja’s face and the hidden Mickey on the grill!
Hidden Mikey? Where? 😂😂😂
Salty Tales ... on the grill lid after you add the meat.
Ostrich is also delicouse as burger had one :) and kangaroo-filet with bacon is also very good as burger :) love them both
Nice! Next time I have to try kangaroo !! 😂 😂
maybe for a better taste try some removemethodes for the gamey part like wet saltbrine or some buttermilk and so on :)
@@hosinio4193 Yep, anything that remove the after taste will make this way better! 😀
Ostrich is so good man! It's an acquired taste but so good and much healthier than beef! If you're trying to lose weight and/ or put on muscle, ostrich is a much better option than beef AND ostrich is arguably better than chicken! Has a better gram of protein per calorie ratio
Nice experiment Ninja!! Not something i am dying to copy from you this time!! Jajajaja
HAHAHA I don't blame you my brother! But it was a lot of fun for sure! 😂😂
You should try the mustard on this one.
I miss ninja so much in sve and just found ur channel 🤩
Subbed ❤️
Imo ostrich is an incredibly delicious meat. I've only ever had it in a stew with rice
Why are you not in Guga’s videos anymore?
Not been invited
Salty Tales oh okay. You guys were awesome tho and the way you say “DEEEEEEEEEEELICIOUS”
I’ve tried ostrich once. It wasn’t overly gamy in my opinion. I really enjoyed it but I wouldn’t pay over $10 lb
I actually love ostrich meat, it’s something different, I’d say it’s our local South African delicacy 🔥💪🏽
I have had it as a burger an the spices were just your basic three black pepper salt an garlic powder an it tasted like a super lean beef burger so not sure if the rub did it in.
mmmm The main issue there was the after taste... rub would influence the flavor of the meat not the after taste. It tasted like raw turkey if that makes sense... 😂😂 weird stuff!
Hmmm... I don't remember any aftertaste, nothing like that!
Cool your own Channel ! Ninja !
I’ve done ostrich in my sous vide. I cooked it to 125 for 2 hours and finished it with a quick sear.
How was it?
I remember the Ostrich burgers at the Lincoln Christmas fair. It was..... rather nice!
LOL , "Its not bad guys" with that face. Like the new graphics Ninja, with you on the ostrich steak, way to gamy for my liking.

Hey ninja for your asparagus cut it at the white part. Bending it like that makes you lose too much of it.
I wanted those to be perfect as I was very suspicious of the meat... 😂😂 Man that was a wild one!
@@SaltyTales I love your content! I was just wondering before doing youtube videos what was your career in Florida? Would be cool to know what the Ninja does for a living!
What kind of grill do you have?
Sorry I am a bit late on this video. I am a few days behind been working my arse off. When I saw the fillet it looked similar to elk to me. I think I would have cooked it a bit more done since it is a bird. Probably at least 130 degrees. After your reaction will never spend money on this. Now if we can just get you some lion meat. It would be epic.
There are many things that can be done differently and may result in better taste but after that I'm not sure I'll try any other recipe with ostrich soon. 😀😀 Thank you so much brother!
My experience eating ostrich was a lot better than his. It was like tender beef with just a little gamey-ness. You might not want to cook it too well done, I've been told it toughens.
If you can ever find sandhill crane( ribeye of the sky ), it is by far the best meat of any bird. Hands down.
I have to try that! Do they sell that meat here in the US?
Ninja, I have only had it from wild game hunters.
ahh Big Bird don't taste good? That was funny and informative. Keep up the good work
