    Watching shows like this helped children who came from a dysfunctional family want to strive for a family of their own just like the Lawrence family. Family shows were a teaching tool. Look how polite and respectful everyone was. I was in Walmart the other day and there were children dropping the f -bomb. The adults that were with them didn't bat an eye. It is shameful how our society has become. We have all of this technology and knowledge through the internet but we are tuning back into a society of heathens.

    Annie was an annoying kid, but it wasn't fair the way the family members all put the responsibility on the child to fit in and accept the family. She just lost both parents and was then rejected by her aunt. Poor little thing was completely heartbroken and lost and alone in the world and trying to pretend she was ok and didn't need anything or anybody. They should have just gone slowly and let her settle in at her own pace and get comfortable. Buddy was particularly insensitive. Could she not relate to the child's situation at all? They were certainly a high maintenance group. If they were all a bunch of nice people all the time the series probably would've been boring. To have good drama you probably need conflict. These days, the word drama in all its forms is practically a euphemism for obnoxious behavior. In Willie's case, I think people expect too much maturity, because Gary Frank was almost a decade older than Willie. Willie was a teenager during most of the show's run but it's easy to miss that because Gary Frank was over 25 and was pushing 30 by the time the show ended and he looked every bit of it.

      @trevorbarnhill697 Рік тому +3

      But that is not the Lawrences style. They wanted to make it work for Annie. They didn't want to throw her out like yesterday's trash. I knew that when Kate told Annie that she would send her back to live with her Aunt back in New York, it was all a bluff.
      And Kate also knew how to get Annie to open up about the death of her parents, and then when she finally grieved, Kate was right there with her. When Annie decided she wanted to stay, the Lawrence family accepted her with open arms.
      While Willie couldn't stand Annie at first, he later on took it upon himself to immediately step in and fill the role of big brother. Especially since Buddy has gotten older and matured, no longer needing Willie. And while Buddy detested her, she realized the benefits of having a younger sister and also took on the big sister role of Annie, helping to watch over her.
      While Doug and Kate both grew to love Annie as their own child, I noticed that their styles of parenting were different as Doug was the move fun and loving parent. Meanwhile, Kate was more of the strict parent and disciplinarian. However, it was Kate that Annie went to when she needed advice or needed their help on an important matter.
      And I also loved how Annie stepped in and bonded with Timmy right away. And even though it took a while, it was nice when she finally bonded with Nancy and also looked to her as an older sister like she did with Buddy.

    • @XxowendanxX
      @XxowendanxX Рік тому +2

      @@trevorbarnhill697 yep. I found nothing to disagree with. I was complimenting the Lawrences. They didn't need Annie for anything and she wasn't the easiest person in the world to love but for her sake they put up with her until she came around. It was Kate who did all the heavy lifting. Willie and Buddy wanted nothing to do with her. Her bonding with Timmy was the writers' way of letting the viewers know that Annie was not a complete psycho, she was just having trouble adjusting to her new life.

      @@travisjames3517 I feel ya but the way you put it, it's as if any show that brings in a child is doomed in the ratings and it's their last gasp before going under. The Cousin Oliver Syndrome. It might be true in many or even most cases but not necessarily in every case. Family was doing well in the ratings when Annie was brought on board. I believe in this case it was merely due to the Buddy character getting older and the need for a smaller child character in order to keep the attention of the younger audience. The Family TV series did well in the ratings but it was known for being genuine in its plotlines, character development, and dialogue. It didn't have the same type of following as the Brady bunch or other shows. So I don't believe in this case that the introduction of the Annie character was a cheap ploy to keep the ratings up. I don't think people should take that generalization and apply it everywhere.

    How do you forget agreeing to take a child in if something happens to his/her parents? This writing can be so unbelievable. I would never forget such a promise.

      I'll wager it's something you wouldn't think about often, especially if you were married with three children of your own that you were raising, a husband with a successful law practice, a grandkid AND a life. Times were different back then, people didn't live online superficial lives. Based on the info provided, the decision regarding Annie was made over a decade prior.
      It's a real bore and conversation stopper when people with low self-esteem compare themselves favorably to a tv character to feel better about their own decisions. You're judging a TV character, get a life, seriously Dearie. A therapist would say you're levelling her to bring her down to your level. It's pretty pathetic.

      @@SlimKeith11 Really? Insulting someone's opinion about a TV character is even more pathetic. "Times were different back then..." I LIVED back then! I know how they were dearie. You sound like someone who makes promises a lot without fulfilling them so I can see why you struggle to understand. Agreeing to take in someone else's child ON TOP OF ALL THAT would make it even MORE unforgettable, unless I made empty promises that didn't mean anything to me. Whatever has made you into such a jerk, I hope you get supportive people on your side to help you through it. Try not to take life so seriously. It's just my opinion about a fictional character in a fictional story. Try not to judge so quickly things you don't know - you don't even know me. It sounds like you are reflecting a lot of your own inadequacies onto me. Perhaps you should consider talking to someone about it. Peace.

      It does seem very unrealistic for a lawyer to forget signing a legal document that would obligate him to raise someone else's kid. That's a very very big deal placed in front of someone trained to recognize the significance of it.

    To be quite honest, I resented their bringing Annie onto the show. It's as if they were trying to give her Buddy's lines from early on in the series. Rather than give material to Nancy and Willie, they brought on this new character.

      They had a very real fear that Kristy would leave the show to pursue other opportunities. They had to prepare for that possiblity and Quinn was a hot child actress at the time.
