"Gnawa" music can be found in my hometown which is Morocco. Hamid El Kasri is a Moroccan "Gnawi" and he is well known all around Morocco. I just cannot believe that Jacob had the guts to explore this music genre. This just shows how Jacob is limitless, purely talented and brilliant. He turned a music that is already amazing to something even more intriguing, this piece is amazing !!!
I'm surprised man thats unbelievable !!!
By the way Im Moroccan too :)
you'd actually be surprised gnawa and jazz have been together for a while. Pharoah Sanders made an album with Ghania and Marcus Miller collaborated with gnawa musicians too.
I didn't know my mother's country music had this many collaborators in jazz.
did he do the culture its due though? I think this is a beautiful song but I have absolutely no education about Moroccan music nor its nuances or techniques so you’ll have to inform me
Callum Walsh why should he 'do its due'? can't he just take this rhythm and use it?
@@GrumpyStormtrooper yeah I guess, its just sometimes you can see western artists try to imitate such a rich culture as this, and fail, which makes me wonder about this. No doubt I love the song either way though
WILL EVERYONE STOP WITH THE "SHE TAKE THE WEENIE" comments!? I know it sounds funny if it were English. But it is part of a devotional song in Arabic that goes جيتك داويني، الله يا الله مولانا "Jeetak Daweeni Allah! Ya Allah, ya Mawlana" which means "Heal me, God! Oh God, oh Our Lord!" And now resume appreciating this beautiful Gnawa/Jacob Collier song. Peace, love from your friendly professor of Arabic ! Thanks, Omaima.
Who'd have thought a jacob collier piece would be in the music 1 2020 HSC
Lmao I just did my music HSC
Best way to end a music 1 exam
🥴🥴
what did you do for the other concept? I did tone colour
Jake Park I did expressive techniques
The lack of censorship in Jacob’s Music is what I most appreciate.
He understands that all frequencies get along with each other...it’s just a matter of finding the best way of organizing them and giving their space to shine.
In the end, it’s just like Peace on this Planet.
Harmony is possible, if We’re just willing to cooperate with one another.
It is possible, but only if everyone is willing. Unfortunately that's very unlikely.
It depends on how we value and treat our children. Parental love is one of the, if not the single most important foundation of Jacob‘s enchanting humanity.
Jacob you've made it into the Australian Aural Skills Music HSC for 2020 bro. The actual heck. I flipped when I saw your name on the paper.
I knew I'd find all my fellow HSC students here lmao. I cannot tell you how happy I was to hear Jacob's music in that exam :)
Absolute legend
Lucky...! Greetings from the USA.
Lost a fair amount of braincells analysing this for hsc music, but it's worth it.
HAHAHAHA SAAME. But it slaps tho
0:00 : wonk
2:45 : w o n k
4:07 : *M E G A W O N K*
What does wonk means? I can't translate it on google :(
@@calexito9448 it means kind of off-kilter or off-balance. Also can mean "strange" or "weird". Something is wonky if it's those things: off-kilter, strange, weird. In this case, it's purposeful wonk, so it's not off-kilter in a negative way, or you could even argue it's just not off-kilter at all, more like it's intentionally lopsided.
Do you mean you think there is something wrong in these changes? This song doesn't sound right to me. It's a shame because I love the rest of this album
some sort of tuplet swing i think. my guess is septuplet (yes im late)
@@Kerry-ft2zf I think the song was purposely intended to reflect its title.
Can’t believe us music hsc students all came here to make comments. Btw 6:11 is the best bit
Is this my favourite? Its up there with djesse. I really love this! The production on this whole album is out of this world!!
I just feel like this is so ahead of its time... This is how music should have progressed a long time ago... if it wasn't for the oppressive state of modern music within the industry... Jacob, please never sumbit to the industry. Never sell your soul to them. Just keep being yourself! Let the madness in ur mind spill out XD Yahweh bless you in your life journey!
Jacob seems to have a clean soul, no doubt.
I wouldn't worry about that. As the friend said on the other comment, "Jacob seems to have a clean soul", and I pretty sure that either him and the "industry" understood that and they don't wanna screw up his magic!
He will make history!
Yeah, the Music Industry! Jacob is showing the Business, and many top artists, how it's done, but I'm not sure they're listening. Those bill counting machines make so darn much noise!
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this in my HSC. 5:12 onwards is a banger. However, I will never know what time signature this was. 8/10 would listen again.
Hsc music 1? I did the same exam today :)
Bro 6/8 or 4/4 who knows. Yeah the hsc gang
I left it as 6/8 or 4/4 triplet swing. Oh well, guess we'll never know
There is a transcription that has that part in 12/8
Was it the whole piece in the exam? Or just 5:!2 onwards?
That Outro is everything ❤️😱
Totally agree, the building and shifting rhythm from about 4:40 onwards just brought it to another level, and another, then yet another
Hamid El Kasri!! Killing it on this track!!
His vocals absolutely rock. Is that stringed instrument from Mali? Sounds familiar.
@@michaelalderete9622 its called a gambri.. Its used mainly in northern africa and some countries in africa in genres like gnawa
@@michaelalderete9622 no he is Moroccan, that's called Gnawa music it's a Moroccan music genre
Woke up to the notification of Djesse Vol. 1 being fully released; I kid you not, I took a minute to prepare myself emotionally.
Hilarious comment 👏 👏 👏
My brain can not absorb so many frequencies at once. This is something to be heard and studied for a lifetime ...
This made me fall in love with Gnawa music.

What even is that drum rhythym, most legendary thing I've ever heard
wellcome to maroco!
MAN THIS SONG IN HEADPHONES.
6:12 put on headphones and it sounds like that scene from Nemo with all the seagulls
If you listen to anything without headphones, you're doing it wrong 😂
Please do something with Arabic quarter tones, half flats and half sharps, I believe they're criminally underrated
4:46 where he moves from the percussive 5 subdivision into a 4/4 again... holy fuck, a whole world casually shifting
I'm commenting before Aimee Nolte and Adam Neely am i cool now
Yes
@peter g Your comment.
@peter g And your spelling of the word seriously.
I don't know who either of those two people are that you mentioned so I will say yes. Yes you are. =-)
I am amazed at how much was mixed in to make this song happen. It seems like a Gnawa/Swing Hybrid. Amazingly fits together but not something I'd want to listen to on an acid trip.
buddy this sends me into an acid trip
This put a nasty expression on my face from the first second on! That's how I know good music when I hear it for the first time. Love you, Jacob!
I heard this on the bbc proms and I’m so glad it finally came out. This one’s my favorite.
I think so much of this music is so incredible...I’d love for Jacob to prank everyone by making a song in 4/4 with the classic 4 chords then just when everyone thinks he’s sold out he puts in the filthiest microtonal chord to finish. Prank Patrol.
you can subdivide the entire song in 5/8. Check 3:11
That later transitions into a *really* fast 6/8. Check 4:11
There's a lot of depth.
I think that l there are some brief 7/4 sections t

THE JACOB COLLIER¨S STYLE AT 0:26 MEGA GENIUS
When this was just used for the HSC Music 1 aural exam for NSW in Australia... 🥴🥴
Funny thing is that it was used again for 2021, NESA hadn't made the 2021 sheet yet as the time of me writing this.
I had 2018-2020 aural exam papers to practice on in preparation for the exam, but I only got to doing the 2019, If I had done the 2020 one's instead it would've been possible to cheat on a music exam lol, but I'm not that kind of person who'd intentionally do that.
Each time you play one song, you will see the new in the old. Like Rick said, always play new things
