I might add, the Island Line stops and terminates at Shanklin, the two extra stations (Wroxall and ventnor) closed in 1966.

Re your comment about the inmates of Sandown Zoo being taken for walks on Culver Beach at Yaverland, I grew up on the Island and regularly saw the Zoo's owner taking tiger cubs for a walk and swim on the beach. It's true. The tiger cubs had the time of their lives on that beach. They were on a strong lead though, and we did watch from the safety of the car.

A lovely video. Years ago I used to go cycling round the Island regularly and Ventnor was one of my favourite places to stop off for a swim in the sea and some food, happy days!!

I was born on the Island & lived here all my life and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else to be perfectly honest. Whilst I love my travelling up & down the UK and all over the great USA each year, I'm always ready to head home to the beautiful Isle of Wight after a while. I wouldn't move away from the IOW to one of these huge & hectic & multi cultural cities on the mainland if you paid me quite frankly.
I live in central Newport, right over the road from the main entrance/main field where the world famous IOW music festival is held each year (I walk my dog in those very fields each & every day). Being as we're so close to all the festival action, we get 2 free festival tickets per household each year along our road as it's all closed off & a one way traffic system is in place. At times those walls certainly shake a bit depending on who is playing, but overall it's always a good weekend.
Sure, the IOW probably isn't for everyone in terms of our much slower pace of life etc compared to some big cities, but I suppose it's where you are from & what you are used to. Me, for instance, after a while, that hectic lifestyle when I'm away in the huge major cities, I get fed up with that quite quickly and I definitely couldn't live like that, that's for sure.

There was a Island family that held business interests in Argentina/ Uruguay and they owned a big house in Sandown. The house was converted to a hotel known as The Broadway Park and the grounds became Los Altos Park. I don’t know the full story but the owner was George Wilkinson Drabble who came from Sheffield I think. Type Los Altos Isle of Wight into Google.

@@annie.phoenix Try typing George Wilkinson Drabble into Google as well as Los Altos Isle of Wight. You will find links to Heritage site that may enlighten you. I don’t know what your surname is but it’s possible you may be a descendant or of a family that was connected to one of his Argentinian businesses.

Don't forget there is a steam rail experience on the island. Now shown in a stand at the Ryde ferry station, so stop and take a look.
