Removing Cylinder Head Off CAT D8 Dozer

  • This dozer has had pressure in the coolant system so we pulled the first head and switched it with another one months ago. In one video you could see that pressure was still present. In this video we are pulling the second head to see if it's cracked and investigating further to see what the problem is.

    If the head isn't cracked, check and see if you don't have a precup that's letting combustion leak into the coolant.You need a special tool to remove the precups, and there will be a small thick steel ring or spacer under the cup. These sometimes get pitted and you will get pressure in the rad from this. Clean or replace pitted ones, and make sure to get the same thickness spacer. Last resort is check for a cracked liner.

    You can tell that engine has been worked on not too many years before this by how easy the bolts came out of the exhaust manifold.

    Thank you for the trip down memory lane, 70's- mid 90's we used to run 15, 22 & 68 A's ive done this so many times with the old man in the middle of a field up to my knees in muck freezing my nads off on a Sunday morning , they were fuckers for cracking heads, they can be welded once I think, your rad looks like it could do with lifting out and jet washing, it may be why she is cracking heads ? oooh just remembered we used to use two screw in eye bolts on the heads with a span set from each to either a scaffold pole so we could dead lift it up and some one shove a plank on the head bolts or shackle to a back hoe . good luck with the old girl please post a vid of her back to life.

    That's all right Pop. One day that wooly youngun' will be easing up and down too. The old 8 I ran had a pressure gauge for the cooling system but it was a newer model. Had seems like 3 ranges that went with the same colors on the temp gauge. When it got up it'd spew out a little but never got hot or really lost any coolant. But you had to be rooting hard on a hot day for it to do it. looks like it's got the brackets for ripper teeth on the back of the blade maybe? The green 7'E's had them. Good video too!

    Removing that head is a big big job,putting it back on should be bigger job!! Hope you video that also thanks for sharing ;-)

      Just rebuilt a Leyland 154 the head was so heavy but we had our grandfather an experienced deisel fitter been doing it for decades so he knew what he was doing

    Air tool are for flat rate repair of late model machines. Sometimes you need to feel these old rusty bolts by hand instead of twisting them off with an over powered air tool; who wants the noise of a gas powered compressor rapping away. There is no Cat shop in this country that would work on a machine half the age of this one; let alone this one....

      Bug Bomb I work at a CAT dealership and we work on plenty of old model equipment, there are "Classic" CAT parts for a reason you know?

      @@calebboyett6591 That may be at the dealership you work at. The Cat dealership near me won't work on a D8H that I own. I was told that they have a Cat certified privately owned heavy equipment shop that works on anything older than 1990. The Cat dealership will haul the pre-1990 equipment to that shop, supply all the Cat Classic parts to them then add on 15% to the bill for subcontracting the work out. That dealership also wasn't very helpful in helping me find the right parts either. They flat out told me that I just need to buy a new dozer when I was looking for new o rings for the 2 oil filters. I haven't returned to that dealership since then. May just be a bad parts guy or him having a bad day but I just order all my parts online now so I won't have to drive a 2 hour round trip just to hear a guy complain about having to look something up or order something for me.

    the block could have a crack in one of the cylinders if a different head didn't solve the problem that mean one of the cylinders is bad and you will have to do a liner change

      These two " mechanics" are ignorant. Your using an aluminum fuel filter housing to pry against. I was a CAT mechanic for 26 years. There are so many things wrong with this video , that I dont know where to start. USE THE PROPER TOOLS !!

      Power tools don't work up here where i am from. we get -40 below zero on the regular in the winter season. good luck starting your compressor in that even, worse with battery tools they aren't a fan of the cold either. best done by hand. my speed doesn't change winter or summer lol

      That's why if you see an operator shut one off hot, you fire them on the spot. Keep them full of antifreeze, warm them up before putting them to work, and let them idle for a while to cool them off after working them and you won't have a head issue. We have owned many D8's and haven't had a cracked head. We still own 8 of them
