I live in Panama and bought an ocarina from an indigenous Kuna market. It is a six hole but doesn’t sound anything like yours...I don’t think it’s the key because all the notes sound the same to me. Any ideas why?
Greetings brokemile, I think I know what type of ocarina you're talking about. They sell them in Peru and South America sometimes. Does it look like this? i.ebayimg.com/images/g/E40AAOSwEgVWT6l-/s-l300.jpg If all the holes are the same size then the tuning is wrong and it's a decoration ocarina. If the holes are different sizes then you have an accurately tuned ocarina. There are some pretty good ocarinas you can shop online that are 6 hole. Here are some options: www.stlocarina.com/peoc.html Their plastic pendants are $10 And their ceramic ocarina (the same type i have in this video) are $21 Songbird also makes great ocarinas: www.songbirdocarina.com/collections/pendant-style-ocarinas All accurately tuned. I recommend you get one in the key of C, but others are okay too they'll just play transposed pitches :)
Yes it looks just like that! Must be a decorate one then...weird because the guy selling them was playing beautiful music. Possible that he was playing a real one though. Thanks for your help!
Can you play 3 octaves of notes or only 2? I tried to transpose song of the sea titanic to G to match my ocarina, but after second phrase or so i have to use a lower octave which i cant find...what can i do, or is the song impossible on 6 hole? I tried playing root note without back 2 holes but doesn't sound like same note anymore.
Usually a 6 hole ocarina ocarina play from C4 to E5. This give it a range of an octave and a third. A 12 hole ocarina can play A3 - F5. That gives it a range of almost 2 octaves in certain keys. key of G is especially hard to do on a 6 hole or 12 hole C ocarina. I would recommend either getting a double ocarina to extend the range (A3 - C6), or buying a G ocarina. You can always transpose to these keys - C Major F Major D minor E minor D Major I've played titanic theme in F on my 12 hole ocarina before.
