Nice job. Looks like you thought of about everything. Small suggestion -you may want to put some wire screen around the holes you cut for the tripod legs to keep small critters out. Congratulations on a cool project.
@@deejaybustab you encouraged me also. I’m going to borrow your idea. It’s much less expensive than the nerdy Dr. Who Tardis I planned lol. Gotta be realistic. Very well done
Welcome to the obsy club DeeJay! lol That's really cool man, very ingenious and functional. It's so nice not to have to setup and teardown, pa, all that stuff every night.
Thanks Joe!!! 😁😁 I’m loving not having to bring everything in each morning & all that setting up, polar alignment & rushing to do everything lol for several years I was thinking of building one & after seeing your setup & Rays huge setup I figured it’s time for me to do something 😉
Nice setup. Now my tripod looked like yours with all of the cables and plugs attached. I would recommend what I did and get a Pegasus Astro Box Powerbox. No more cords on the tripod legs.
That is absolutely fantastic. I’m just starting out in the hobby and was thinking of doing something very similar with the same slide top shed. This is great and it’s an inspiration for me down the road. Maybe next summer. Thanks for sharing your creativity.
Nice little backyard observatory you got yourself. My friend uses a heated pet blanket as a background heat source to protect the vitals. Just found your channel. Now subscribed 👍
Thanks & thanks for the sub 👍🏽👍🏽 I use a small heating pad under my laptop to keep the laptop a little bit warmer during the winter months when it gets really cold out 😉
I love the simplicity of that dual-purpose flap and solar panel holder. I miss using my C8 on the EQ6. I switched to a wider refractor which is great for many things, but not planets, small DSO's and lunar close-ups. I really need to setup a secondary mount for my C8... Smart call on the golden rod. I'm using a TG365 cover to great effect but for some weird reason pollen and dust still manages to accumulate on my gear despite the cover. Maybe I really should take cues from your setup. I'd love to motorized the top so that I can go full remote.
Thanks!!! I still have my 80mm refractor for wide field as well. For now I’m going after all these smaller galaxies for the moment with the 8SE. I’ll see this spring how the pollen goes in here. I know I’ll get some in this shed so hopefully it’s not too crazy 😁
Looks great, wonder what the total cost was. Have you thought about a way to seal up around the tripod feet to the floor? It seems like you could get rid of a great deal if moisture if those 3 holes were removed. Another thought is to just have the fans on when its hot inside, so you dont pull in moist ground air all the time?
Great video. Thank you. We are running the eq6r w rasa8 wo the second part moving in the same shed. We have to roll our mount out each night. Do u have any plans or more info on building a complete roll off roof. Again awesome. Very cool.
I don’t have any plans from this build but I’m going to make an update video with more details to help others. I did make 2 small modifications that really help the roof roll off even better now.
That's a great idea. I am in the process of planning out a pier/observatory so hunting for solutions. Being that you have a permanent structure now, why not mount a mini pc under the tripod (I 3D printed a holder that connects to the circular tray between the legs). Then use say AnyDesk to remote in to it whilst sitting on the couch. ;)
DeeJay, I'm about to put the tracks in and was just wondering if you could tell about the dimensions of the cuts you made to install the 2x4 and tracks. I'm trying to get an idea from the video but not sure how much to cut in order to install the track. Sorry for the hassle, but much appreciate your help. Thank you.
The 2x4s I only cut 1 side on the observatory all because I installed the solar fans way before I decided to make the roof roll off. So for the other side I didn’t cut the 2x4 I only laid the track on top of it & screwed it down. The side where I had to cut the 2x4 I just cut it to the width of the track just on the inside so if the shed & I got lucky that the track & 2x4 ended up fitting just next to the fans. Now if I knew I was going to make this a roll off roof from the start then I would have moved the fans further over so I wouldn’t have to cut 1 of the 2x4s. If you check out my last video where I show deep space photos, I show the 2x4s a little bit better in the video. Hope this helps explain it a little bit.
This is amazing and just what I was looking for.I ordered the shed from Amazon do you have links or descriptions and measurements for the casters and v rail? . Once again fantastic work Sir! thank you and Clear skies
Hey DeeJay, I just got my shed put up. Was wondering if you could tell me how long your "V" tracks are. My guess is around 6 - 8 feet but I just thought I'd ask. Thanks for your help.
Can you tell me what the length of just the original roll off is. Nothing in the manual. I’m going to be using a C8 with Hyperstar. So I may get away with it. Thanks
The shed is actually smaller than it looks & for my setup with the dew shield on my 8” it will clip the roof if the entire roof wasn’t removed out of the way. Maybe this wouldn’t happen if you have a smaller refractor like a 60mm.
Ingenious build! Nice work! You mentioned hornets/wasps in between the walls. Have you had any issues with rodents climbing in from the tripod leg openings?
Let's tell the truth now - "[My wife] wanted something very small and with a small footprint in [her] backyard." We married types know! I got my wife to agree to a larger one only because her greenhouse is going next to it!
You take the award for one of the most unique observatories! Great job!
The build quality is spot on, great observatory
This is great! As budget as possible; as simple as possible; and functional.
Fantastic work.
I looked at that shed and thought it was do-able. You proved that it is!
Excellent video Dee Jay. Observatory looks great and great design. 👍
Thanks 😊
That's an outstanding do it yourself observatory. Great job..... I need to look into doing something like that in my backyard.
I love that idea for the fan, and the roof slide is better than just the stock like I have.
Absolutely a great idea and build. Would you know the inside dimensions so I can see how my 127mm reflector would fit in there?…thanks
Good job!

Wow. Brilliant use of materials. Nice job.
Thanks!! I finally got motivated to build this after getting tired of lugging this heavy mount out each night & back in each morning lol

This might be just what I need! Any chance it would fit two rigs if they were on piers instead of tripods?

Why was it necessary to slide the back half as well. Wouldn't just the first half have sufficed?
