RWD is an OK choice super practical all rounder. I will follow my heart and get a LR, it drives better as it is all wheel drive and heavier too. Kids are out of the nest now, living the life is the choice for me! Fxck the practical choices, got enough of it for the life, no more cutting corners :) I will go right and get what I liked :)))
Before before I saw your videos I was 70% sure that I want a RWD Model Y over L R or P. now I’m 90% sure. I am very interested in your upcoming video about the tires because I’m thinking of going 18 inch because I’m not interested in looks and just interested about the range. thank you for for your channel you’ve now a new subscriber looking forward to next videos.
Now I’ve had the Y for a couple of months. My average consumption with the 20” wheels is 147Wh/km. My lifetime average consumption in the model 3 was 143Wh/km with 18” wheels. On the freeway I average 153Wh/km. I wouldn’t base your wheel choice on range/consumption as it’s a very small difference and in the city there wouldn’t be much difference between the 2 wheel sizes. Base your choice on ride comfort and being able to change the look with wheel covers on the 19” wheels. The bigger profile tyres in 19” will give a smoother ride. Price of tyres and range are really insignificant. I don’t regret going for the 20”wheels. The Pilot Sport EV tyres are the best tyres I’ve ever had.
With the RWD Y you have a choice of 19”, 20”. If this is your first Tesla 19” would be better choice but you get pretty average Hankook tyres. I just got sick of the wheel covers. It feels a bit strange basically having hubcaps on a $70k car. This is just my opinion though and a lot of other people like them.
Just did a 400 km round trip 90% at 110kph in my 3 month old MYRWD and finished with a trip average of 162 wh/k. One quick supercharger top up midway. Biggest difference was wind resistance. Tail wind outbound and headwind home bound. 10% difference in battery utilization.
Thanks for that Chris. Yes it’s still pretty efficient compared to other EVs the same size. Actually I just drove a similar trip but with perfect weather. I did one quick 10min Supercharge only so I would arrive home with enough to head straight out again on some errands. I averaged 153Wh/km which is only a little over 10Wh/km more than my Model 3 used to get on same trip.
Hi Matt ,I think the refresh MY with reduction in 0 - 100 being a second quicker will make it a nice improvement in my opinion and sum of the other updates.I wish that second reduction the 0 - 100 could be applied to mine with a update but it appears to have different rear motor so probably not possible. I am happy you are enjoying the new MY
Thanks Max. Yes it probably has the same rear motor as my 2021 M3 had. A lot more torque. I’m happy with this one. I feel this MY has more acceleration between 80-110 than my 3 had. Still the fastest SUV I’ve owned.
I have a 2023 Model 3 RWD and think it is a solid car. I can understand why the Model Y is going to be the best selling vehicle on the planet for 2023. Tesla software is amazing. I still think it is under reported. The Tesla app and the Tesla OS works great. I drive my Model 3 in Chill mode because there is plenty of power and that will help the tires to last longer. I think most people do not buy Tesla vehicles for speed. Tesla is known for making fast EVs, but their use of space, the tech in general, and then their charging network, just makes Tesla very appealing. Nice video. Hope the Y serves you very well for many years to come.
I haven’t driven an AWD version. Out of Shanghai factory they would both have the same suspension. I’m still happy with mine 8 months later even with 20” wheels. It’s a good balance between handling and comfort.
Congratulations on the Y Matt! Great content as always! 😊 My wife and I love the 2022 3RWD but considering changing it for the now subsidized Y RWD primarily due to the space. Unfortunately Tesla’s trade in quotes don’t help the decision… One question, is the car sensing distance from objects when parking? How different is it to 2021 3RWD with the sonar bumper sensors??
Thanks KV. Here in Australia we still get USS fitted. One of the many reasons I upgraded this year. My M3 Tesla trade in offer was terrible but I still feel it was the right choice all round.
I notice that the lane changes in your MY are somewhat smoother than in my MY. I’ve tinkered with every setting but the lane changes are still quite abrupt. Also, the bottom of the rear window in the M3 is higher, relative to the driver’s eyes and rear view mirror than in the MY. I get a slightly better view in the MY compared to the M3.
Hi Stephen. I can’t explain the lane changes. It random. I don’t always get the smooth changes. This is perfect conditions with clear road markings. Maybe try calibrating your cameras if you haven’t already. I’ve had people mention this helps with AP.
Another great video Matt, one thing you could add is the Y is much easier to get in and out of, something you notice if you are getting old or have older people with you. If you push a Y into some corners you do notice the extra mass and its higher COG compared to the 3 too. The refresh of the 3 when it gets here will eliminate the firmness of the suspension "gripe", which we don't mind in our 3 anyway.
Yes. I forgot to mention that. You don’t have to be old to appreciate that 😂. I’m not overly tall at 6’2 but I find it difficult to get in and out of sedans. The Y handles similar to the VW Tiguan I used to own but with the obvious benefit of a heavy battery close to the ground. I don’t really push it too hard into corners but I know what you mean. 20” wheels are more sporty for cornering. I liked the suspension in the 3 as well. It really depends on what car you are coming from. My Tiguan had adaptive suspension which I do miss.
Actually, the Model Y is just as difficult to get in to as the model 3 *IF* your wife is short, and the car doesn't recognise you as the primary driver (this happens to me every time I go to drive after she has driven it. I think it is a bug.
@@greghudson9717 My wife doesn’t use the phone app so I can’t verify that issue is the same for everyone. On the odd occasion she drives it we just use the keycard. I do understand though when I do the car shuffle around at night and get in my wife’s car I hit my head everytime.
Hi Daniel. It’s a great phone mount for my android phone I use with ScanMyTesla. It’s not a wireless charging phone so this is a vice type mount that clips to the air vent. I re-fitted the MagBak mount to this car after I filmed this video. The MagBak mount is still my favourite wireless charging mount. I also have an Enhance Auto wireless charging mount but haven’t filmed the install video yet. You can see that mount here. enhauto.com/phone-mount
Congrats on the MY RWD. Tesla has announced they will bring the to the US soon. A couple questions on the change and your set ups. 1. Does this have the AMD processor like my MYLR has? If so, has that caused any issues with your tesla systems monitoring set up? 2. What mount are you using for your monitoring system? As always, enjoy your videos!
Hi Donald. Thanks. Yes I believe the RWD Y for the US might actually get the higher torque rear motor same as what was used in my 2021 M3. It will be a much more affordable Y for the US and a lot of people just don’t need the AWD. Yes this new Model Y has the AMD MCU. No difference or issues with either ScanMyTesla or S3XY buttons. I’m enjoying the faster infotainment 😊
I use a MagBak wireless charging mount which I reviewed a few months ago for my IPhone and just a cheap Tesla air vent Amazon mount for the android phone which runs ScanMyTesla.
@@notinthemanual What I'm interested in is if there is the ability to connect 2 devices to the bus. If I recall correctly, the MY & M3 had the bus connectors behind the center console and there were adaptor harnesses that allowed 2 devices to be connected to the bus and there was reasonable room to do that. Do you know if that is something that can be done with the bus connector location now located inside the panel in the passenger footwell? I'm looking to connect both the ScanMyTesla & a Hansshow streaming rear view mirror and/or some kind of heads up display.
@@athuddriver Ok. Yes I run an OBD port splitter at the rear of the centre console. For now. It’s a little messy but does the job. There are many locations you can tap into the bus. The new S3XY buttons commander will have a harness for behind the footwell panel. There are also locations behind the dash trim panel. For ScanMyTesla you really need the OBD port accessible as it needs to be unplugged every now and then to fix glitches. Most accessories will give you an adapter to tap in the harness closest to where the device will be mounted. I have been doing some investigation with Enhance Auto as the plug locations change with left to right hand drive.
Yes. That video is coming. I have been waiting for battery stats to settle and now just need to make time to film it. Hopefully get that filmed this weekend.
The free transfer was for FSD not EAP. I’m still running on the 3 months free EAP I got with my loyalty bonus. I’ll purchase it again at the end of the trial.

10:00 America thinks it has the luxury of wasteful speeding, like 80 MPH limits that force conserving drivers to be tailgated. But just wait until shale oil peaks sooner than most imagine (late 2020s if not sooner). It will be a global oil shock, not just American. EVs aren't operating independently of general energy waste.
I agree. Just because energy is cheap it doesn’t mean you should waste it. One of the things I like about EVs is they are so much more energy efficient. Tesla are really setting the benchmark for efficiency which means you don’t need to lug around a massive battery for the occasional long distance journey. It’s one of the first things you learn owning an EV is range isn’t as big a deal for most people. Even this Model Y has more range than I need.
I agree. It’s even dangerous while AP is engaged which is why I keep it to a bare minimum while demonstrating features. It’s also hard to see where my eyes are looking exactly when viewing from this camera angle too. It can appear to you that I can’t see the road when I actually can. I do appreciate your concern and I will try to be more aware of when I do it.
