The 5.56 is a good round out to 400 meters. After that wind can really screw you up. That is why, for those long shots, I prefer my bolt action .308. Still.... That was some mighty fine shooting .
Would love to see a first timers build video with specs and build list. Roughly around $1500. Help with those who can't figure out every single part or what they should order. There is so much information out there and so many numbers it can be difficult to ensure proper selection and match of parts.
I’m strongly considering getting the 1-6x for my AR15 and 1-8x for my AR10. My guns are multipurpose, I don’t have the budget for a rifle specifically for hunting deer or elk and another specifically for hunting coyotes, one specifically for home defense etc, so I want a scope I can put on my AR and be able to plink targets out to 600 yards or so, then make good shots on deer out to 300 yards, and also turn the scope down to 1x and use for home defense or other close range shooting, do you think this is a good all purpose optic?
I just bought this scope. Planning to set it up on a Mini 14 556. I really like the ACSS. Amazon and eBay both refused to ship it to California. I called Primary Arms and ordered it through their website which was no problem having it shipped to me. I guess California wants to ban certain scopes too. Unbelievable!
Nice job guys, I’d like to hit coyote at 400 yards. I’ve had 3 coyotes today at about 400 yards and didn’t want to take a shot. I shoot a s&w m&p 16” with a trigger job and free float. 55 Hornady vmax, do you think it can be done? Thanks for the video
So i'm still trying to decide between the 1-6x and the 1-8x, both in SFP... thoughts? it will be on a 16" RECCE style rifle that will see duty use (LE).
I'm not sure you need the 8x if you'd be using this as an LEO. You aren't going to be taking 300 yards shots anyway let alone 800 yards which is where the extra 2x comes in handy.
Engagement range is not the only variable that demands magnification, it is also very useful in situations where only a small portion of a target is exposed and/or PID is critical. My response area is very rural - we are basically our own backup, SWAT is about 45min away at best, so yes, I may NEED the extra magnification and take a shot at extended ranges Oddly enough, I have been very, very, close to pulling the trigger a few times at over 300 yards away while providing over-watch for officers. I have an 8x monocular in my go bag that I used in the last incident and that worked really well for PID but I found it difficult and time consuming to switch back and forth from my mono to my scope... by the time I'd get locked back on with my rifle, things had changed enough that I needed to look through my mono again. Also, I guess it would be good to note that this is not my only firearm that is with me... for close engagements my tool of choice is a suppressed 9mm PDW which has a RDS - this rifle is more of a niche gun for those special calls. I am very close to going with a 2-10x and doing a piggy-backed RDS but after playing around with one of the 1-6x gen2's at a recent class, i'm second guessing the 2-10x setup... especially for 1/4 of what the 2-10x and RDS will cost. I'm just wanting to know how the gen3 1-6x and 1-8x compare in regards to optical quality and durability - you are one of the few that I trust to give honest feedback ;)
The 1-6x and 1-8x are very similar in regards to optical quality. Durability I cannot say - I have not tortured tested either nor do I plan on it, but from what I've seen from others they tend to hold up extremely well for the price range and even above that range. The 8x gets a bit more blurry at full power and of course the eye box/relief is smaller on full power compared to the 6x, but these are the give and takes you are going to have when using the same optic housing to jump from 1-6x to 1-8x. It's not really physically possible to have two such scopes and both have the same eye relief and box at max power when max powers differ. Both are nice, neither isn't manageable at full power. 8x wins the PID game at longer ranges and helps at those long distances. It's all personal pref I suppose, but in your case I'd likely opt for the 1-6x. Even shooting a head sized target at 300 is easy peasy on 6 power. I think the 8x really just has the advantage when it comes to PID at long ranges and shooting past 500 yards. Also, there is something to be said for field of view in your case as well. 6x wins that game since both these optics are SFP.
What do you think of the clarity? I'm gearing up to shoot local Short Range Tactical Rifle competitions; 8" targets at 100, 200 & 300 yards from multiple positions--both slow and rapid fire strings. I'm leaning towards the Vortex Viper 1-6. Dilemma is that I also want to fire three gun with our local pistol club with the same set up. The Viper seems like more of a "spin the dials" to get get on target type of scope while the ACSS is more for hold over, but I've heard you can learn hold overs with the Viper reticle. I don't want to buy two scopes. What do you think?
Clarity is on par or better for the price range this optic falls into. I'd say that applies for both the new 1-6x and 1-8x. Are you referring to the new Vortex Viper PST Gen II 1-6x? Regardless, the ACSS is a far better BDC reticle than any of the BDC options Vortex offers. BDC wise the ACSS wins this one by a long shot. However, if you are looking to dial in your holds you can more than likely be a bit more precise once you have good data and DOPE. Honestly, at 300 yards an 8" target is still pretty big and a BDC reticle would work very well and get you on target much quicker than dialing. I think for this range I'd have to opt for the BDC reticle, ACSS. If you were shooting these size plates at 500-800 I might have a different opinion - dialing has some advantages for accuracy at longer ranges on smaller targets.
Thanks! They have magnified and non-magnified. I shot non-magnified with a red dot: circle dot helped to figure out hold overs. We can bring two rifles and compete in both.
Do you have to hold higher/lower when moving from the bench to the prone? I tried this optic out for the first time at range and noticed that while I could hit the target easily while prone in the bed of my truck, but when on the ground off a bipod I struggled to get a single hit
Nope, shooting position is entirely irrelevant, but if you're running into issues you might just want to check your fundamentals and your shooting position.
Great shooting. I have the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6, on my 18 inch spr, but I'm thinking of trying the acss. I do have the Holosun acss red dot and it's awesome Great video
dragon166666 I did use one, but it wasn't what I liked on my 16 midlength. It worked ok, but it wasn't for me. It might be different for you. Trial and error
Juan Rodriguez thanks for the response. I've heard that the reticle is very small and difficult to see clearly without magnification. Agree or disagree?
dragon166666 I would agree with that. The acss was better without the magnifier on the rifle. But I do want to try the primary Arms 1 to 6 acss reticle on my rifle so I think I might try that but the Red Dot was good to go
I was think of getting there 1 by 8 version but this 1 by 6 is fine for an Ar15 5.56 right ? Is the 1 by 8 am over kill if I'm only planning on shooting 600 yards max ?
Correct, this 1-6x is also for 5.56/223. The 1-8x helps with target ID and precision shots at longer ranges. The 1-6x has better field of view. For man-sized targets the 1-6x is great even at 600 yards as seen here, but the 8x will help for those precision shots like taking head shot as seen here, etc.
I don't have a SE to compare side by side yet (unfortunately). If/when we get one in hand we'll do a comparison video. I have however played with the SE 1-6x briefly and I can say given my limited exp with it, the ACSS is a FAR better reticle. Much more user friendly, faster to use at all ranges, and more tools built in. ACSS wins the reticle game hands down.
Does the imi razorcore gum your rifle up? No matter much I oil my bolt and carrier I notice this ammo burns it off dry within 40-50 rounds, I actually have to use the FA.
Highjak86 I've tried googling my issue, no one else mentions the same thing. Wonder if it just effects the specific lot that I got (00225/G). It's annoying being at the range and having to hammer on my charging handle with a magazine to clear the rifle and clean and re lube the bcg every 2-3 boxes, m193 and m855 don't give me the same issues. I haven't tried the razorcore in my other rifle, I mainly use it in my mk12 mod 1. Pretty sure it's not my upper it's a high caliber sales built mk12 upper. The upper and bcg are colt and the oil I use is EWL slip 2000.
How Big is the Reticle? i know that can be subjective.. I have the primary arms 2.5 prism scope and find the reticle is to small for my taste.. Can you say how it compares in size to the Vortex Strike Eagle?
I have the 2.5x as well and that's really getting down there. As the magnification increases so will the reticle so you're basically looking at a reticle about 2.5 times the size of the 2.5x. I'm not a big fan of the Strike Eagle mainly because the ACSS just puts it to shame (and I'm a Vortex fan boy) so I don't have a ton of time behind it, but I'd wager the reticle size overall is similar to the 1-6x.
Thanks for the info i have the strike eagle on another rifle and was looking at this optic for another rifle. there's not one local that i know of that has the primary arms to look at
I zero'd per Dimitir's instructions. 50 yard zero with confirmation at 400 yards. There isn't going to be any one gold standard for zeroing this load since the reticle wasn't designed specifically around it. You will need to punch your numbers into a ballistic calc for you specific load and then determine what zero range gets you lined up the best.
It all depends on what that "Special Purpose" is. A SPR can be many things. Am I engaging man size targets and do I need to do it quickly? Then ACSS. Are my targets a bit smaller and do I have the time to dial in everything? Then 10x with accurate external turrets and a good DOPE chart.
We shoot here all the time, multiple videos at this location, there is no road even close to the area these bullets are going to travel. Regardless we have a backstop. Let us handle the safety portion since no viewer can adequately assess that by just watching a video. Thanks.
Thanks! Ah man, well it just depends on your goal. You can get pretty crazy on the muzzle brakes if you want and if you don't mind the concussion and muzzle flash you can go pretty big. There's give and take to everything. The only reason I say not to buy something like this is that it's pretty expensive for what it is, it's essentially a QD suppressor adapter so you're paying for that part - I'd say start buying muzzle devices that attach to suppressors after you determine what suppressor you want, but it sounds like you're not wanting one. The Lantac Dragon has very good marks in 223/556 form.
I haven't - we don't usually get to far into the competition style muzzle brakes. There are a good handful of brakes that work better than the one shown here, but we're not looking for the world's best recoil killer. This is on mainly as a suppressor attachment.

You will need to punch your numbers into a ballistic calc for you specific load and then determine what zero range gets you lined up the best.

That's fair. The Gamma has a very similar two-port design, so it probably performs similarly anyway.
tripod .75grm 10x scope - right

It's "Dining on wine and ashes" for anyone else interested.
Sold .. thanks
IMI 77gr Razorcore, good man.
Awesome
Better bring in the 308.
Why not the 55gr or 62gr that the scope was made for. That would be more valuable info to most of us instead of this hybrid 77gr stuff.
We've shot those loads all the time through optics like this. See channel for all of those videos.
Thanks For that important info.
Great shooting. Wow. Couldnt do better myself. No really. I coulndt not even close
