Upd: When I use the term East Germany that applies to todays eastern region of the Federal Republic of Germany.
"East Germany" is not the right term for the former GdR that existed in that region from 1949 up to 1990.
Just to say. PLS Accept, the GdR was NOT "East Germany", never ever.
    Dear Sophie, my two cents.
They view the relations between China Mainland and Free Pepublic of China Taiwan from a position of strategic power.
I don't agree with the one-China policy at all.
From the experience of my life, Alexander may not feel pissed off, I say:
The position of the people of the smaller of the two brothers is very similar to that of the GDR and FRG.
The Federal Republic of Germany had the economic, political and again most importantly:
full economic support that the GDR had not suffered from the USSR after the huge destruction in the WII.
So we were in a much worse position to set up our own independent life in a completely different way in all areas.
We were always under sanctions, economic and political attacks.
not to forget the constant threat from NATO.
The one-China policy completely ignores the self-determination of the Taiwanese, who have developed into their own nation.
If you want to see what will come of an annexation by Mainland China, look to Hing Kong and the West's hostile takeover of the GDR.
To this day, there are colonial conditions in East Germany that have been cemented for eternity by economic and political structures.

@@fredtan1506 No, You are absolutely wrong. The poeple of Taiwan are on the right track regarding democracy,
they are right in having the pride, the pride that Germany (being a slave of the USA/UK) lacks.
      No, think again.
