There's nothing like a Warner Brothers 1930's gangster film featuring James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and the pantheon of Warner character actors. Top shelf entertainment.
The only flaw with this movie is that the story between Cagney and Sheridan isn’t ever really expounded upon. They had great chemistry in all of their movies together and I wish we could’ve seen more of their characters together in this one 🥺
I’ll be honest, I had to watch this film for a class and I was honestly not expecting much since I knew little to nothing about the classic films. However this film actually resonated with me alot more than I expected, it’s a classic for sure.
Best mob movie scene ever. This is what I like about the old gangster films as opposed to ones like the Godfather. They tend to be more about the drama surrounding the murder as opposed to the violence of the kill. We have slashers if you like watching people get fucked up. LoL
@JacktheFilmFanatic-vu1nk maybe now but the brutal beating of a pregnant woman, a horses head, shooting of a police officer, several people garroted and the graphic (gratuitous?) machine gunning at the tool booth was extremely shocking at the time. Despite the OG calling it new it was 50yrs ago.
"There you go with that wishin' stuff again. I wish you was a wishin' well.......so that I could tie a bucket to ya and sink ya." They don't write 'em like that anymore, boys and girls.
Fun to notice: Our character featured in this scene who is ultimately killed in the phone booth is the same actor who played Limpy Julian in "Each Dawn I Die", another tremendous Cagney film which was released the following year.
Yeah as his name was Joseph Downing as Steve in this film. He also was in 3 Edward G Robinson films " I am the Law", "A Slight Case of Murder " & " Larceny, Inc." which also featured Broderick Crawford, Jane Wyman & Anthony Quinn.
This is loosely based on an actual gangland killing. In 1932, the Irish-American gangster, Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll, was killed in a NYC drugstore phone booth. Allegedly, Coll was on the phone with a rival gangster, Owney Madden, who deliberately kept Coll on the line long enough for a gunman to enter the drugstore and open-up with a Tommy gun. (This murder was also recreated in Coppola's 1984 "The Cotton Club" in which Nicholas Cage's character (based on Coll) is gunned down in a telephone booth).
Yeah as I saw that movie " The Cotton Club" with Nicolas Cage as Mad Dog Coll getting rubbed out like that. And James Remar who was in the "The Warriors " was good as Dutch Schultz. 🔫🔫🔫🔫🍺🍻🍾
Reminds me of when he shot some holes in the trunk of a car while it was occupied by some poor stiff in the movie, “White.Heat” when he complained that he couldn’t breathe.
"Stuffy, eh?. I'll give you a little air." BANG! BANG! BANG! Doing the deed with a .45 in one hand and holding a chicken drumstick in the other. Murderously cool. :)
In this science he went from guy on a date to a man with his back to the wall and decided to fight with the shrug of his shoulders and the hitch of his pants. Great stuff.
The line is, "The guy's heeled, he's in too good a spot...", meaning well-heeled, normally slang for affluent or financially comfortable, here referring to Rocky still being too dangerous, even though outnumbered and cornered. Plot-wise, their caution amplifies Rocky's victory in this sequence, he's not just a thug, he's a mythic thug, never at a loss.

Ann Sheridan, no one was more beautiful than her. This is one of the best movies ever made
My best friend's daughter is a dead ringer for Ann Sheridan. Yup, Amanda is just as beautiful.

Your right about that.
@JacktheFilmFanatic-vu1nk The Godfather is an amazing film and one of my favorites, but I prefer well dramatized hits or shootouts usually.

CAGNEY, the song and dance man, bless.

That was Public Enemy
@@JohnC-er3rg Yes, dear John. I wasn't implying that it was from THIS film.

mkeogh76 in those days a lot of men were shot in phone booths, both the gangster and the Gmen. I am related to a Gman that got it in a phone booth.
Thats a truth. Many would denie. But there dead now...
Was waiting for someone to mention that story about "Mad Dog". 👍🏽
Yeah as I saw that movie " The Cotton Club" with Nicolas Cage as Mad Dog Coll getting rubbed out like that. And James Remar who was in the "The Warriors " was good as Dutch Schultz. 🔫🔫🔫🔫🍺🍻🍾
I grew up watching the Bowery boys, good times.

:)
Shooting the trunk while eating fried chicken. Clint Eastwood 'adapted' that into his famous Magnum "Do I feel lucky?" scene in Dirty Harry
James Cagney was incredible.
Great movie!

Stick my neck out her, think that’s probably Gagneys best movie, and the best gangster film on screen 🤔
Cagney’s the man best actor an best movie ever just brilliant
In this science he went from guy on a date to a man with his back to the wall and decided to fight with the shrug of his shoulders and the hitch of his pants. Great stuff.
Cherry coke yes
He's my favorite; I haven't seen this whole movie since 1988! What's up with TV?
Today it's all about reality crap!!!!!!!!!!
Susan Ryan it’s not tv, the audience to appeal to
@@robrutt7129 There are plenty of people who would watch it. TCM sucks.
The best of the best
He asked for a cherry coke. I thought that came out in the eighties.

What does "His heel is in too good of a spot" mean?
